If you compare detection rate, Avira definately detects more viruses than Kaspersky. icon_rolleyes.gif

Agreed, but when it cames to full security product for home use a.k.a internet security suite, kaspersky is a better choice. Both have disadvantages also...

Kaspersky ---- Compatibilities issues with quite a long list of other security applications...
Avira ----- Quite a bunch of false positives...

I had to machines one with antivir free and kaspersky workstation. The one with antivir was infected with a virus while my kaspersky detected and deleted the virus with no prob. So i would go for paid anti-virus rather then free ones.

But if your cheap...

+1 for Avira

Confession: i haven't tried Kaspersky, Eset NOD32 or Norton because I still believe in free antivirus and good computing practice (or I'm too cheapskate to buy premium software and too bothered to constantly cracking pirated antivirus)

But I've used several free antivirus over the years:
AVG 6 & 7
AVS (Active Virus Shield, powered by Kaspersky 6 and no longer available)
Avast (forgot the version but it was only for a few months)
Avira Antivir (now)

Through my (limited) experience,

AVG 6 & 7 was good enough in its days. It was my primary antivirus during Windows 98 times and my transition to XP. But the viral detection (both in the memory-resident shield and scan engine) got sloppy and let through a large number of common viruses, as well as gave a large number of false positives (flagging files as infected when they are not). Scanning rate and system resource usage is bearable, but could be better. Updates are usually once per day. Infected files cannot be cleaned, quarantined nor deleted half of the time. I had to either manually remove the virus or use virus removal tool off the net.

AVS used Kaspersky 6 engine and was very, very good in several areas. It ran low on system resources. Efficient memory-resident shield that stops infected files upon access. Fast scanning. High detection rates. Automatic definition updates every few hours. And best of all, it not only can HEAL infected files. You can RESTORE the infected files back if the cleaned files no longer work. This free antivirus sets the benchmark and simply blows others (free antivirus of its time) away. Heck, it was better than MOST of paid antivirus. I used AVS to disinfect (not just protect) 15 of my office computers when I first joined the company and found all the systems infected while using Panda and Symantec Antivirus. Ahh, good times...

Avast is relatively decent for a free antivirus. The voice and sound only sounded cool for first few times, then it quickly became annoying. Having tried a few antiviruses before, I find Avast is more resource hungry than those I previously used. Can't really comment on other areas as I didn't stick with it for long.

I'm using Avira Antivir Personal 8 now. It has improved slightly from version 7. Avira is very good for prevention of viruses and trojans. Detection rate is very good. It stops viruses and trojans in its track when you try to explore, open or run infected files. However, it can only delete or quarantine infected files, never healing (or cleaning) them. Scan rate is relatively decent. It uses total memory of only 10MB roughly when not scanning, and another 50MB when scan is running. Updates (usually once per day) can be painfully slow some of the time, but Avira have recently added more download servers to solve this problem.

PS: Please note the above are from my limited experience and entirely my personal opinion. You should try out the latest antiviruses for yourself and form your own opinions and preferably share them here.
