QUOTE(Conroe @ Feb 4 2009, 01:00 AM) ![]() Russian international Arshavin joins Arsenal QUOTE Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Russian international midfielder, Andrey Arshavin has joined the Gunners from Zenit St. Petersburg on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee. Arshavin, 27, who played a key part in Zenit’s UEFA Cup winning campaign last season, was also a member of the Russian EURO 2008 squad in which he scored two goals from his three appearances, earning him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’. Arshavin won the Russian Premier League with Zenit in 2007, making a total of 232 appearances for his previous club, scoring 51 goals. During his time with Zenit, he was also part of the winning team that picked up the Russian Super Cup in 2008, the Russian Premier League Cup in 2003 and featured in the UEFA Super Cup victory over Manchester United in Monaco last August. With 41 international caps for Russia, Arshavin has scored a total of 15 goals for his country. His versatility has allowed him to play in a variety of positions; the 2006 Russian Footballer of the Year started his career as a right midfielder, but has since played as an attacking midfielder and more recently has filled the ‘second striker’s’ role. Source : http://www.arsenal.com QUOTE(sigheart @ Feb 4 2009, 02:35 AM) I've already got both our Home and Away jerseys. Anyone know of good places that might just bring in Arshavin's NNs other than Al-Ikhsan ? I've never had a player's NN printed on any of my jerseys before so kinda noob in this lol. Andrey Arshavin - The first Arsenal interview QUOTE(RyanAtwood @ Feb 4 2009, 08:53 AM) "I am so happy to be joining Arsenal. They are one of the leading football clubs in the world, with a group of fantastic young players and a great manager,'' he said. "I am looking forward to making the Arsenal supporters happy and helping this great club win trophies. I'm happy to be an Arsenal player, it was my dream.'' The Russian revealed the prospect of playing under Wenger was one of many reasons why he had his heart set on the move. Arshavin told Arsenal's website: "I moved because I like the Arsenal style, Wenger as a coach and I like some of their players. I followed each game from the moment when I met Arsene Wenger. "He told me every time I talked to him, he said: ''I want you to come to Arsenal". He had confidence in me.'' When asked if he had a message to the Arsenal fans, he answered: "Trust in me and Arsenal.'' "It was a very hard few days for me but now it doesn't matter because I'm a Gunner, it's great,'' he added. Having played for Zenit in this year's Champions League, Arshavin will not be able to play for the Gunners in the competition. Wenger hopes the Russian will kickstart the club's campaign for qualification to the Champions League next term, however. "We are delighted to have signed Andrei Arshavin, he is a player I have admired for a long time,'' the Frenchman said. "He is a versatile player with great experience, who will add real quality to our squad. "Andrei is an exciting impact player with a huge amount of ability and has been an influential force with both Zenit St Petersburg and the Russian national team in recent seasons.'' Ivan Gazidis, Chief Executive of Arsenal Football Club added: “Andrey was identified by Arsène as a quality creative player that would add something special to this youthful but talented squad. The Board has always backed the manager with his transfer targets and we are delighted to welcome Andrey to the Club where he will help us to challenge for honours this season.†Arshavin, who will wear the number 23 shirt, believes it will take him up to two weeks to return to full fitness but insisted he will have no problems adapting to the English game. The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove
Highbury 1913-2006 For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913. ![]() Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956. At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators. Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury ![]() Ashburton Grove 2007-present Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season. The Gunners 2008/2009 ![]() Arsenal Kit 2008/2009 ![]() Defining Moments of Arsenal FC From foundation to the first World War Arsenal Football Club began life when a group of workers at the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory decided to form a football team in late 1886. The Club played under the name of Dial Square. Their first match was a 6-0 victory over Eastern Wanderers, on December 11, 1886. Soon after, the name Royal Arsenal was adopted and the Club continued playing in friendlies and local cup competitions for the next few years. ![]() In 1891 the Club turned professional and changed its name to Woolwich Arsenal, finally joining the Football League in 1893. The Gunners moved to their current home at Highbury in 1913, as a Second Division side. Following the First World War Arsenal were voted into the newly expanded First Division, where they have remained ever since. Chapman and the glorious thirties Herbert Chapman took over at Arsenal in 1925, and in 1930 he guided the Gunners to their first ever trophy beating Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup Final. The following season Arsenal were champions for the first time. Between 1933 and 1935 the Club won a hattrick of league titles (which has only been achieved by four teams in the top flight). Sadly Chapman died in the middle of the run, by which time he had reached legend status. George Allison took over and the dominance continued for the rest of the decade, winning one more FA Cup (1936) and another title (1938). During this time Arsenal had some of the games greatest players on its books: Alex James, Ted Drake, Cliff Bastin, David Jack, Eddie Hapgood and George Male were just some of the names in what was one of the greatest sides ever to play in the Football League. ![]() Post War to the first double The Second World War stopped Arsenal in their tracks but Tom Whittaker became manager and more success followed. Arsenal were Champions in 1947/48 and 1952/53; FA Cup winners in 1950 and runners-up in 1952. The 60s provided little in the way of silverware at Highbury, with two losing appearances in the League Cup Final in 1968 and 1969 being the closest thing to success. Bertie Mee had taken over in the mid-Sixties and Arsenal lifted their first ever European trophy in 1969/70, beating Anderlecht 4-3 over the two legged Fairs Cup Final. Better was to follow the following season. An Arsenal side containing the likes of Charlie George, George Armstrong, Ray Kennedy and captain Frank McLintock, won the league and FA Cup double. They clinched the title at White Hart Lane, then beat Liverpool after extra time at Wembley to win the Cup. The side returned to Wembley for three consecutive FA Cup Finals under Terry Neill at the end of the decade winning the second of them, 3-2 against Manchester United. The game became known as the Five Minute Final. The Gunners also reached the 1980 Cup Winners Cup Final, with a team that included Graham Rix, Frank Stapleton, Pat Rice, David OLeary and Liam Brady, but lost on penalties to Valencia. George Graham's honours In 1986 George Graham, a member of the 1971 double winning team, took over as manager from Don Howe and more glory days followed. He led Arsenal to their first ever League Cup triumph in 1986/87, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the Final. Two years later the Gunners won the League Championship, with a famous last minute goal from Michael Thomas clinching the title with a 2-0 win at Anfield. Another title followed in 1990/91, when the side, including the famous defensive back four, lost just one league game. More silverware followed. In 1992/93 Arsenal became the first club to win both domestic cups in the same season. Sheffield Wednesday were the beaten side on both occasions. Grahams era of success was rounded off the following season. A superb run in the European Cup Winners Cup ended with a memorable 1-0 win over Parma in the Final in Copenhagen, thanks to Alan Smiths strike. Arsenal failed to retain the trophy the following season, losing in the 1995 final to Real Zaragoza. By this time George Graham had left the Club. He was succeeded by Bruce Rioch, who was in charge for one season, during which time he signed Dennis Bergkamp. The Arsene Wenger and the Invincibles Era Early in the 1996/97 season Arsne Wenger arrived at Highbury, becoming the Clubs first ever manager from outside the British Isles. In 1997/98, Wengers first full season at Highbury, Arsenal achieved the League and FA Cup double, for the second time in the Clubs history. Dennis Bergkamp was named Football Writers Association (FWA) Player of the Year, and PFA Player of the Year. A tremendous season was rounded off perfectly for French Internationals Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira as the Gunners stars played their part in Frances victorious World Cup campaign. The Club also said goodbye to striking legend Ian Wright, who left Arsenal as record goalscorer with 185 goals in all competitions. In each of the next three seasons Arsenal were runnersup in the Premier League, and had plenty of involvement in cup competitions. In 2000 Arsenal lost in the UEFA Cup Final on penalties to Galatasaray, and the following year lost the first ever FA Cup Final played at the Millennium Stadium, 2-1 to Liverpool. In 2001 the Gunners also reached the Quarter- Final stages of the UEFA Champions League for the first time, but lost out on away goals to Valencia. 2001/02 was to prove another momentous, recordbreaking season for the Club. Arsenal completed the first leg of their third double by beating Chelsea 2-0 in the FA Cup Final, and ended the season with a 13-game winning streak. The 12th Championship was made secure with a game to spare courtesy of a memorable 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Arsenal were unbeaten away from home for the entire league campaign. ![]() The following season Arsenal narrowly missed out on retaining the title but the Gunners became the first English club in more than 20 years to retain the FA Cup with their 1-0 victory over Southampton at Cardiff. Thierry Henry was voted player of the season by the PFA and the Football Writers Association. Season 2003/2004 saw Arsenal win back the title in unbeatable fashion - managing to go though the entire league season without a single defeat. Finishing 11 points ahead of second-place Chelsea, Arsenal smashed several records on the way to their 13th league title win. Spanish youngster Cesc Fabregas arrived in January and by the end of the season he had broken the records for the youngest Arsenal player and goalscorer. The Club, playing some mesmerising attacking football, were also close to an unprecedented fourth double but lost in the FA Cup semi-final. The Champions League campaign came to an end at the quarter-final stage. The unbeaten run continued into the following season, and in August 2004 Arsenal overtook Nottingham Forests record for the longest all-time unbeaten sequence in English league football. The tally eventually reached 49 games. The Gunners made it five trophies in four seasons by winning the FA Cup following a penalty shoot-out success over Manchester United. Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira converted the decisive spot-kick, and it proved to be his final kick for the Club, as he left after nine years service to join Juventus shortly afterwards. The 2005/06 campaign will be Arsenals final season at Highbury, the Clubs home since 1913. The Trophy Cabinet » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Don't wanna waste StarGhazzer long post
QUOTE(StarGhazzer @ Feb 4 2009, 10:01 AM) G'day everyone and it seems like everybody's in a jovial mood Here are my comments regarding the soap drama that we've been watching for the past 2 months. 1. Aren't we glad that we have Arsene, Gazi, Ken, and the other members of our "cheapskate" board? It doesn't matter whether the transfer fee is 15+2M as quoted by Zenit, or is it 10+2M which is suggested by the English media? Whatever that we paid for Andy is way below the initial 20-30M price tag. Sure, it was a gamble to play hardball but like I mentioned numerous times before, we have the top cards in our hands and it turned out to be a straight flush! Citeh paid 12M for Bridge and 14M for de Jong (when he was available for 3M last summer), plus flogged off a 19M record signing in Jo. Of course, 8M for Given might seem like a decent deal though. T'ham who paid an extra 7M to get Defoe back only to lose him through a fracture, halving the profit from Keane's transfer, and paying another 14M for a player who failed to impress Arsene in the summer. And we have Arsenal who grabbed one of the most rated player for half price. Furthermore, it gives out a message to other clubs that we're not one to be f*cked around in transfers... Don't expect to extort/blackmail/cheat us of our cash. Thank gooners we don't have crazy people and fans as our manager/CEO. 2. Now that we've got the Tzar, it's time to ponder about his possible positions. Let's start from his style - Bobby Pires comes immediately to mind. He doesn't dribble excessively, he has quick feet, great fancy finishings (lobs, cannons, curlers), and he seems able to operate in our little intricate triangle gameplay. These are, of course, merely observations from video clips but it's the best reference we have for now. Andy's arrival might see him being shifted to the wings, probably RW during Theo's absence. Our current available players allow us to field: Nasri-Denilson-Song-Andy Alternatively, we might even push Andy/Nasri up front as second striker during a 4411 to support Robin. Finally, assuming that every attacking player is fit: Dudu Robin Nasri Fabs Denilson Andy With Vela being Dudu's deputy, Theo/Nicky being a late game impact sub, and possibly Tommy to take either the wings or a deep CM as in the Czech NT. I left out Ade because his head is not screwed on at the moment. 3. Andy's just about the right age. We're probably too used to Arsenal buying youngsters these days that anyone close to 30 is considered old. At 27, approaching 28 in May this year, Andy can only be seen as a short to medium term replacement. Which is, undeniably, perfect for us. He'll be in the peak of his prowess, he'll provide the younger players with experience and guidance, and he won't impede/compete too much with the kids in the future... I'll say Andy would give us approx 5 years and by then Nasri, Theo, Vela, Nicky and even the reserves eg Jay/Nacer/Jack/Rambo would be approaching mid-20s... Just nice. And if that's not convincing enough, think Bobby Pires. Le Bob came at 26, but only reached his peak at around 30. If Andy is able to emulate or even triumph what Bobby did for us at 30 or later, then so be it; I'm willing to wait. 4. Just read this from gunnerblog: » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « http://gunnerblog.com/?p=1461 'Nuff said. 1. Andy probably won't be ready for the NLD... If he was started and scores the winning goal, he'll ascend immediately into the hall of legends... too bad that's unlikely to happen. With T'ham getting back 3 of their ex-players that achieved decent results under Uncle Jol plus our lacklustre midfield, it'll be easier if we had Andy available. Too bad, too bad. In fact, with the limited number of games remaining he is unlikely to be the saviour that we need despite Arsene's insistence that we don't need one. I would like to think that Andy's one for next season, and it's a good time to let him gel now rather than waste an entire summer on his transfer (thank gooners...) and miss out on pre-season. 2. Despite all the nice words Andy said during his interview, those are merely sweet PR talk. His "Barca Dream Move" comments during the summer remains fresh in my mind, and hopefully he won't f*ck off to Catalunya in the near future. In fact, if he scores a winning goal vs Barca should we ever meet then he'll be an instant hero as well 3. This drama took up too much time and effort that it may have caused us to miss out on other positions. Andy's a good addition, but his arrival doesn't even paper the cracks that exist in our midfield and defence. Gazi and friends still have lots of do in summer, especially a proper CM/DM to partner Fabs; new CB and more competition for WBs; and continue to grab potential starlets. Right now they have Robin's and Theo's contracts to sort out, and I have faith that Gazi will do well in this department. 4. There would be overly-high expectations from some fans after this high profile signing. People should realise that even with Andy around there's no divine right nor absolute guarantee that we'll win every match now... Better to be cautious and wary than to suffer great disappointment. Of course, it's not right to join the Doom 'n' Gloom Party like our regular pessimist (you know who) does... But use a quote from George Will, Meh... join the Arsenal Optimists Club instead. Wrote too long again... don't think anyone will read it lol... Gonna pick some posts on Arshavin and put on the first post later |

Here's my opinion on our midfield.abulabu suggested playing Nasri and Fabregas as CM.For that to happen, the back-4 must be steady.Gallas is getting better than he used to be during 1st half of the season and Djourou improving aswell just that he looses concentration at times but lets not forget that the lad is just 21.For now until Fab and Walcott returns,I think this is the best midfield can be formed.
Arshavin---Nasri---Denilson---Eboue Theo will be back in 4 weeks time and he can replace Eboue on RW and our midfield should have more pace and penetration from our flanks. As for Fab and Rosicky, once they are fit,Fab can play the advance role as CAM while Rosicky can play as deep CM like how he used to play in Czech NT.We can expect some rocket going forward from him. Nasri/Arshavin---Cesc---Tommy---Walcott/Eboue This midfield I guess will only be available when the season close to an end. Ade should step-up his game and try to convert half-chances into goal like he used to last season. As for Robin,we can just pray he'll stay fit and without any injuries niggling.Dudu should be in action in 2weeks time for 1st team and by then we can rotate the Forwards department.Bendtner would be better to come-in as impact sub as it's proven as he can win some game when he comes in with 30 minute or 20 minutes left and he can be very frustrating if he starts, maybe that's because of the ankle injury he had that his touches were not good. i'm really glad that arshavin is now an arsenal player....we needed at least 1 addition to the engine room and his arrival is great on the offensive and creative side...
but now that the deal is concluded, i think it would be a good time to put in a reminder i posted earlier.... QUOTE(lostasylum @ Feb 3 2009, 11:26 PM) i was just thinking.. after all the hoolabaloo and arshavin becomes an arsenal player, will expectations of arsenal become frenzied and almost mythical again? as it is, with his imminent arrival, there are already those are already taking it for granted that arsenal will immediately start winning games again and some are even believing that arsenal can now challenge for the EPL title..... we must remember a few things... 1. arshavin is not fully match fit because the russian league is still on holiday. 2. he has missed most of zenit's pre-season training so even his fitness in general may not be 100%. 3. he's a talented player, but he has never played in the EPL and may need time to adapt. 4. i have no doubt that he's NOT going to start arsenal's next match. 5. arsenal won't automatically start winning like crazy just because he's arrived. what i believe arshavin will bring to this arsenal side is: 1. creativity that we have been so sorely lacking in the absence of captain cesc. 2. experience of being a more senior footballing figure to an arsenal side that is very lacking in senior players in the midfield area. 3. goalscoring prowess to our midfield that been absolutely appalling this season. 4. optimism to a side that been severely depleted by injuries, especially to key players. 5. competition for players in the midfield so that the young ones who have been under performing and played inconsistently will realise that their places are no longer automatic. but even with all that he brings, arsenal do NOT have the divine right to be allowed to turn up for games, stroll on the pitch and expect to win. we will have to fight tooth and nail for the 3 points in every match, big matchup or not. the other 10 players (and us fans) need understand as well that arshavin's coming doesn't solve all our problems. if we depend too much on arshavin and if arshavin doesn't adapt fast enough, or doesn't bring his "A" game, we will still play as crappy as we have been in recent history. just thought i'd give some sobering thoughts lest we all start putting our heads in the clouds only to be brought crashing down to earth later. having said that, i'm glad that at least we got ONE new player during the transfer window. i was beginning to believe that wenger wouldn't buy anyone. =) now, roll on the next opponents!! PS - i do realise that i'm posting this even before we have the official announcement of arshavin's arrival, but oh well, i thought i'd post it anyhow.. heheh... |

Btw, i feel we could deploy 5-man midfield if everyone is fit.
---------------Almunia-------------- --Sagna--Gallas--Toure--Clichy-- ----------Denilson/Song------------- --------Fabregas----Nasri----------- --Walcott/Eboue--Arshavin/Rosicky ------Van Persie/Adebayor------ Arsene could deploy Andrei on the right wing and V. Persie could drop into left wing role. Btw, I feel we need a DM in our team so Rosicky and Cesc in CM in 4-4-2 lineup is very risky. Playing Rosicky deep in the middle is acceptable, but there's a risk of defenders being exposed. Either we trust Denilson and Song or Arsene hunt for another DM in the summer. As for Abou Diaby, he's develop more into an attacking minded player, so DM position is not an option for him. |

A midfield of Cesc-Nasri or Cesc-Rosicky WILL never work. No matter how good your defenders are, they will not enjoy having to deal with an the opposition breaking in from midfield with no one to track back.
Remember when we had Vieira and Platt in 1996/97, the super back 4 requested for more protection and the next year we brought in Petit. We have always played with two DMs in the past, and then one DM since Cesc came on board. I doubt we, or any other team for that matter can cope with having no DMs at all. |

Well,im not sure if you are aware of this.Giggs and Fletcher played as CM when they trash Chelsea 3-0(FYI Giggs is a LW and Fletcher is just an average CM about the class of Denilson). That's because their back-4 were so good and that is why Chelsea never had a clear chance nor they drive into final-2rd of MAN UTD in many occasion. Our squad is well known for having greater possesion without end-product so we won't need a ball-winner kinda midfieder. We just need someone who can unlock opposition by using passes or runs.If you watched Rosicky play, that lad never stops tracking back and giving cover for Clichy when he was deployed in LW.Neway,I never stress that it would work. That was just my suggestion based on my view on other team. sometimes Offence can be the best defense! The New Arshavin Chant? QUOTE Tuesday, 3 February 2009 The new Arshavin chant? I thought I'd have a bit of fun and create an Arshavin chant for Gooners to sing. It is based on the Abba song "Dancing Queen" If you fancy leaving a little chant of your own in the comments feel free. You are our Arshavin, Move those feet, Arsenal's twenty-three, Arshavin, score a goal for the Arsenal team, oh yeah You can score, You can pass, Gooners all round know your class Woooah, See that boy, Arshavin, he is the Russian King. Here is the original! "You are the Dancing Queen young and sweet only seventeen Dancing Queen feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah you can dance, you can jive having the time of your life see that girl, watch that scene dig in the Dancing Queen" Keep it Goonerish.............. |

(i'm too lazy to look it up though) He played in CM/DM role when he first came. Arsene touted him as the next Vieira, so everyone was thinking him more of a CM?DM role. He did play in that position, partnering Gilberto in one game. Didn't do well, though. The next thing u know, Arsene played him in left wing for a couple of games. He was doing well then until suffered a horrific injury. Now he's definitely not a Vieira in making. I have high hopes for him when he first came, now his inconsistency isn't helping all. As for the midfield, i agree with zan81, we need a solid DM. Flamini was doing it with flying colors last season, so that is why we only lost 3 games then. If Denilson's could increase his work rate, he might be the answer. But he had some disappointing games where he did not track back and most of them lead to us conceding goals. Eg. Bentley's goal... I'll be fair, give him time to develop. His passing sometimes could be Cesc-like but smtimes crap-like. He need to be much more consistent. Anyway, it's Le Boss decision to make. Viva La Gunners ~~ |
