apisgogo already answer this, it depends too, if ur portfolio looks like crap, u'll get a crappy salary doesnt matter if u're holding a master or PhD (or the other PhD.., but if the boss is a desperate housewife, ur chance might be brighter). it also depends on your performance.

my previous company. greetings card company. i got 3 1/2 years experience. moderate skill for Indesign / Illustrator / Photoshop. they offer me RM1.6K only. they said because i'm not familiar with greeting card industry. so I ok la.

later after i join that company, got one fresh grad join also and only familiar with photoshop + basic illustrator without any experience. they paid him RM1.5K. so how. ????
feel so bad.

3 months only worked there. then cabut. for sure they kasi keje susah pada me everyday. very unfair and that kid cukup masa balik.

i was about to tell you not to spam like that. smile.gif

from my experience, this country generally has low appreciation of design skills.

in my business, i met so many people. some are reasonable but many are bugging for low low low low prices. wah they think design so easy like that - NO COST MAH, YOUR HEAD ONLY........ yeah, right......

staying true to the spirit of the thread.

previous company i worked with 2 years ago (a multimedia software dev company)

junior graphic designer (3 olang): rm2.2k
senior graphic designer (otai, 1 only): rm3.2k

best way to earn more is to go cross discipline. unless you're awesome, it's just hard for a graphic designer to break rm3k in his first 5 years of working.

among the choices i think you might benefit from:
1. statistician (data visualization, read edward tufte to get a rough idea)
2. flash/flex programmer (even illustrator and photoshop is scriptable with javascript now sad.gif)

everytime you go out of your comfort zone your salary increase a little.

In my case, last time when i was doing my graphic/ad internship (around 2005 and I was totally fresh) at this ad agency, for the 1st month i get paid like RM250, then the 2nd month I'm earning RM1.5k for my internship.

Then, as for the 3rd month (end of internship) i was offered a position of Senior Graphic Artist (in the same company) with permanent status, earning 2.7k. Then after 1.5 years after that I promoted to my position now, a Art Director.

now u tell me, is it impossible for fresh grad to get nice big salary? in my experience it is possible.

Like I've said before on my post, u need to be pro-active. Bring something different on the table. position yourself as a solution rather than just a fat-ass-lazy-employee waiting for monthly salary to come.

Last time I was doing all the monkey job that u could think off to get my position now. u want something u have to earn it.

A lot of people (mostly my close friends) strongly recommend me to setup my own ad agency because of i already have few sets of retaining clients (currently i served under this company that i worked) that can support. But i didn't. I think the main reason here is that my employer knows how to handle and 'take-care' of me. Now im looking forward and working my ass out loud to become partner to my employer. So my point here, choosing the right employer also can be a main catalyst for you to move forward.

But nevertheless, follow my guidelines (as in my previous post; attending interviews), and u'll be fine.

today we have a lots of graphic designers, freelancers and also wannabes. you have to distinguish yourself well in order to have an edge.

oh btw, my company (the co that worked now) is not a Bumi (even im a Bumi) and none of our clients is coming from Gov tenders. (coz we all know all the Bumi ad agency reaping and taking advantage of the gov jobs and tenders thus getting rich quite fast). No to be racist but to prove a point that everybody can do great things if you put your mind and effort to it.

rezeki tuhan. maybe my rezeki still at this average tongue.gif thanks god. still survive nod.gif
sometimes depends on our lucks. u work hard/smart but still our bosses not appreciate our effort.

here my experience, i work hard and they (bos & clients) like all my works but very cheapskate about payment. after a year for all my hard work and my boss still not "take-care" my 'welfare', i become a fat-ass-lazy-employee waiting for monthly salary to come. then resign.

I would not say I'm 100% lucky (maybe 30% luck). But i indeed work my ass off. Doing all the monkey donkey works.

Before i join, this company is only focusing on design design design, layout layout, nothing further. Then after i joined, i changed the way on how the company delivering services; instead of just design, we offer a complete marketing/advertising solutions to our clients.

another thing, previously this company cant do any reliable web services. Since i came, we able to handle all those web 2.0 applications, focusing on SMEs, successfully. I put all my efforts to deploy this services.

Also, I handle the company studios in overall. Means that I'm the IT technician, and so on. Even park my boss's car!

These only the tip of iceberg of what i brought on to the company that I'm working now. Not to brag, but to prove to you all that you need to be pro-active in order to get ahead. luck will only get you moving, but u need to push your limits to reach your destinations.

I managed to prove to my boss that I'm an assets not a liability.

Currently I'm holding 2 degrees; Creative arts and Business, specializing in Entrepreneurship.

I will not reveal my salary tho. smile.gif

Job Title: Web Designer
Salary: < 2k
Experience: almost 2 years
Opinion for my job: No matter how good I am... I'm still supporting roll... Basically I handle anything that require "Design". I'm not just design website but also mainly in system interface design. Previously there are few more designer around...now I'm all alone...
