Cool down bro... thumbup.gif

Anyway, the biggest advantage for AMD loyalist is that you MAY not need to change the mobo if you are already on the AM2+ socket... So, less $$$ is required for an upgrade... To put icing on the cake, this new AMD CPU wont be price too high as Intel's pricing will ensure AMD's CPU is reasonably price as it is competing with Penryn class... To cap it off, the OC'bility looks darn good even with air cooling... brows.gif

To switch from Intel platform to AMD would need more determination la... tongue.gif

Considered very high..  sweat.gif  Even 1.4V is considered quite high sweat.gif

Those 1.55V to 1.6V are considered "suicide" voltages..  sweat.gif

Example http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel...spx?i=3184&p=11 (QX9650 overclocking voltages) wink.gif

AMD does not use high-k dielectrics or metal gates on 45nm (while Nehalem has fully static CMOS circuits that probably tolerate more voltages even on HKMG) so you can't compare them.

And comparing initial voltages (stock) and cooling is more relevant than just volts. But sure, let's ignore that for the sake of selling 1k+ mobos without guilt.

And oh hey, I'm back. Nice to see the news. smile.gif

confirm can liao...

Gigabyte, Asus and MSI already said BIOS upgrade is all that's needed to support AMD's 45nm CPU, AM2+ and AM3...

AM3 still has DDR2 controller...

EDIT: ikanayam was right lol.

DDR2 and DDR3 have little in common. Most of the changes require a "new" MC at least, same with the GDDR3/5 debate. smile.gif

Check AMD Opteron 2384 (Shanghai) specifications, at 2.7GHz its already 1.35 V stock Vcore... Just wondering, how much do you think the Vcore will be at stock 3GHz? Any guesstimates.. hmm.gif

Wrong.
DDR2 and DDR3 are actually EXTREMELY similar in the RAM chip itself.
The big differences are actually SPD tables (of the RAM itself) and the power distribution. That's why DDR3 has different pin-outs.
There have been incidents where DDR2 and DDR3 sticks from a same company have used the EXACT same chips. smile.gif

So Intel's choice for Nehalem's DDR3 isn't a technical one, it's a political move, probably coupled by the urging from RAM makers (DDR3 = cash in!)
*

Same chips for DDR2 and DDR3? Can you document this? I have serious doubts, because they are not very similar. DDR3 has quite a lot of different electrical specifications as well as prefetch width.

Same (1.35) or otherwise 1.4. Uncore on Deneb probably runs even faster.

At 1.4 it paints a very favourable picture of the 1.55v relative actually, and it makes more sense in the term of thermal bins (2.7 Shanghai is a "traditional" 95W TDP part)

But since Shanghai uses 1.35 at default already, we're possible to rule out the worst case 1.3v scenario.
@1.55 vs 1.4v for same speed, power goes up by about 20%.

Quad cores at 4GHZ are impressive and it matches up to Intel Core 2 Quads. Really big improvements(kinda reminds me how they improved from HD 3xxx to HD 4xxx for the Radeons).

Here comes the next price war!! I'm getting one lol.
