Anyone here studied or studying in overseas now such as America, Australia, UK,Canada or anywhere around the globe?
Mind sharing your experience with us? as in how are the people over there? their lifestyle? how are they treating you? are there any racists? do you have alot of friends? are most of your friends your race(chinese, malays, indians) instead of white people and black people? are you happy with your decision to study overseas? do you regret for not staying back in Malaysia to continue your studies? do you get homesick every now and then? what's the difference between studying in overseas and studying locally?

List out what course, what college, which state, which country that your studying or had studied in and share your experience with everyone.

Come on everyone share your experience! rclxms.gif

Go overseas of course if you have the opportunity to do so.
Bear in mind that not everyone will be as lucky as those going abroad to further their study. It will broaden up your mind.

my answered simplied.

studied, UK.

ppl over here? good, friendly, generally way well mannered compared to msia, good customer service, smile, 'cheers, thanks, please, excuse me, pardon me, sorry' are words you wont miss in everyday life.

their lifestyle? some eat in really healthy way, some are drunk 4/7 days, lazy yet efficient and punctual and will not overdo. my lifestyle? healthy yet boring.

treating me so good so far. have met few addicts too, treating me like god since i have to give them drug.

racist? wherever you go, there is. but why should i care, not that i am affected anyway.

friends? plenty, same race but also whites (coursemate, housemate, collegua, random friends' friends)

yes i do. learned plenty of stuff, experienced plenty of stuff that you will never get in local environment.

regret? no, not at all.

homesick? no, except for food.

difference is huge in term of development of soft skills e.g. critical thinking, communication skills, personal skills etc etc besides the way the education is delivered if compare to msia.

yes like said by azarimy, visit those thread e.g studying in aust, studying in UK, studying in US, and you will get the ideas of studying overseas if compare to msia.

There are racism in every part of the world, even in Malaysia. Even though Australia is rated as the friendliest country in the world, there are still plenty of racists around, racism towards Asians is common throughout the world

The best thing you should do is to accept that there are never going to be a level playing field anywhere in this world and racialism exist everywhere. Accept that and move on with your life.

Many Malaysian students oversea stick together like glue so as to re-create their own mini-Malaysia. If so, why bother go oversea?

It's not that bad there.

Even racism exist in Malaysia itself.

Ask yourself, how do you look at Bangladeshis and Indonesians...

malaysia is a multiracial country. we don't view foreigners as that bad, at least for me, except those stupid ones who commit crimes.

but in russia, racism lingers among its citizens. its just that they dont have the guts to voice their feelings. even a fruit vendor got gangbanged and killed in public, just bcoz of his skin colour. the accused had been released. also, a 9 year old girl was killed while taking a walk with her father while the father was being beaten.

Depends on how deep your pocket is. But studying abroad does help you look at things in a different perspective.

Racism, is everywhere. Ignore it, as far as I know, it hasn't got to a violent level, unless of course, you are the one creating problems. There are some rotten apples but mostly on the whole, you can become friends with anyone (refering to locals, there)

I feel blessed to have the opportunity to study overseas. Broadens your mind, perspective & overall outlook on life. I used to get homesick a lot in the beginning, mostly because of food & families. Now, I think sometimes I get the opposite of homesick, what do you call that eh? And uh I was in the UK.

Just sharing my experience

I'm studying in U.S

People: Most Americans are friendly, but this depends on where you are. If you're in New York or Los Angeles where the demographics are more diverse, people are more friendly. Racism therefore will tend to be less. On the other hand, if you're in some small cities, where the populations of immigrants are low, you probably will experience more racism & stereotype. If you're in big city, don't worry about racism, people there are friendly as they are more exposed to the world & they meet more people. Your friends will be apart from you & you have to do anything on yourself & for yourself. Don't expect to be spoonfed when you're abroad. The fact is, nobody is gonna give a shit about you when you're overseas. Trust me, this happened to me. I gotta do everything myself, but on the bright side it made me a strong person & made me realize independent.

Friends: When you study abroad, it is another transition in your life. You have to realize that you WILL lose some of your best friends or buddies. No doubt about that. Don't expect you new friends to be the same as your old friends. I realize this, I still miss those times that I hung out with my college buddies in Inti. Those were the days. You will meet people from all corners of the world, but again don't expect them to treat you the same as your high school buddies treated you, it ain't gonna happen. Meeting new people is always fun. You get to exchange ideas & share your culture. I always like to share our M'sian culture with Americans & I would learn their culture. Most of my friends are M'sian & they are the one that I hang out the most. I've got people saying that when they're abroad, they don't mix with M'sian. That is just WRONG vmad.gif . You WILL tend to mix more with M'sian because we're of the same background & culture. Please don't try to be different by only hanging out with local (i.e British, Americans etc) just to be cool or you hang out with them because you're in their country. I don't believe in this bullshit. I think you should mix with whoever you feel comfortable with.

Culture: You will learn different cultures & practices. You will see guys kissing & holding hands, you will see girls kissing & touching backside, you will see people making out in the airport. These are just some of the culture shock that you will encounter when you're abroad. It will widen your perspective IMO. Let you see the world & not only hide under the shell (Katak dibawah tempurung). Once you see these kinda culture, you will slowly get used to it. Every country have different jargons for everything. For example, in M'sia we call it toilet, but in U.S we call it restroom, toilet refers to the toilet bowl. These are just some things you will learn as you progress. As much exposure as you get from abroad, I always tell my friends please DON'T forget your root & where you came from. Don't try to be different when you're back in M'sia by speaking British accent or American accent, this pissed me off. Just be yourself. Studied in overseas doesn't mean you're more superior than people who studied local.

Homesick: Maybe the first month you'll feel home sick & lonely. But as you progress & get to know people, time will fly. Before I know it, I'm already 3 years here in U.S & will be graduating in Dec. Its what you do to overcome homesickness. You will get over it over time & your parents will also leave you alone & don't call you every night. I'd say don't worry about this issue too much. I'm sure as you know more people, things like clubbin, traveling, partying, meeting chicks thumbup.gif will keep you busy & forget about home. I don't mean totally forget but not think about home for while.

I do agree with this statement. Once you're expose abroad, your mentality & perception will change. The way you see thing will be from different angle instead of one.

It has its pros and cons to study oversea. Study local can definitely save you a lot of money. You could have more chances to come close with family. Oversea education quality generally is better than local.

True, studying overseas gives you more exposure and also more experience in the REAL WORLD, but it largely depends on what you're there for. Look at what you need to study first...

If you've been to overseas to study, the way you see things will be different. As in from different perspective. For some people, their personality will change, usually to the positive. I guess it depends on individual.

Financial background should be your first consideration above anything else when you are deciding whether to further your studies overseas. If your parents can afford without much burden, then you are fortunate enough and may take this opportunity to broaden your mind. If you have to undergo a tight budget when studying abroad (like you need to take part-time job, parents sell a house/ loan), then you definitely should not.

I am a local uni student and had the opportunity to study with harvard, stanford students under lecturers from harvard and other great universities. To me, there are indeed differences in both way of learning.

eventually, i think what is most important is to choose the way that makes you feel comfortable the most. You financial status, your academic result. If you used to have nasi kandar for supper, stay and study locally. but if you wish to survive in an environment for few years and you feel happy, excited with that, go oversea.

One fact, most people don't regret studying oversea doesn't mean that most people regret study locally. I, myself do not have less exposure compare to those oversea grad. It is a matter of your attitude.
