That's okay by me. Expected anyway. As long as the scares and what little of its PG13 gore is there, its good. Glad to hear its funny.

Well this was a major disappointment. Really bad to be honest. I didn't see any of the Evil Dead movies, but I knew enough that this was not one of those serious flicks, that it was meant to be campy, and scary, and funny.

First, the scary bit. Or rather the lack of it. It certainly wasn't frightening or scary in the least bit. I dont even mind cheap shocks, as long as they work, but they dont here. The key to making us jump is to create a sense of discomfort and tension, and making us dread. Once you do that, even if the jump is expected, it will still work (just take a look at [REC]). Sadly there is no mood, no atmosphere, no nothing here. Everything in between the attempts to scare are just so... normal. I say 'attempts' because it doesn't scare, and it's worse that the attempts are pretty far between, so the movie lacks any kind of momentum. It just repeats itself over and over again. The only scene which can be said to be good is the car park basement scene. Love the shot where the old lady is revealed.

The funny parts? There were a few. Again, the car park scene had one riotous laugh. Almost of the humour is done through gross-out scenes, some of which was okay, some were just bad complete with unconvincing CGI. I know for sure one thing the original Evil Deads have over this: they didnt use tacky CGI. Practical effects beat this any day of the week.

The ending was pretty decent though, simply because enough stuff was happening in quick succession to maintain the momentum. In the end, a 2/5 from me. Major, major disappointment. I went with 7 friends and I didn't need to ask what they thought about it. It was apparent throughout the movie. Kinda made me feel bad coz it was me who asked them to watch it. laugh.gif What the hell are the critics smoking?!

p/s: I've never seen any of Peter Jackson's earlier horror stuff either, but I enjoyed The Frighteners a hell lot more than this.

Words cannot describe how awesome this movie is. The trailer does the film no justice at all. You think you've seen all the scary scenes in the trailer but that isn't the best part of the movie. The best part is the events leading up to the horror. You try your best to second guess it but it still gets you.

Best part of the movie: car park sequence

Best line of the movie: Did I get any in my mouth? laugh.gif

Funniest part of the movie: Involves a goat

Meh-est part of the movie: Involves dancing

Best thing about the movie: Ganesh (Best horror movie character in the past 20 years).

Rating: 9/10

Top 3 movies of the year so far.

Just got back from watching the movie. I can safely say this is the best comedy this year so far. The horror was just jump scares thrown in randomly.

Here's a list of scenes which was hilarious to me *spoilers*:
- The fight in the car (almost fell of the chair when the old hag bites Christine toothless)
- The "pork queen 1995" picture
- GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! Man, the goat was just chilling out.
- Anvil (I thought I was watching Looney Tunes)
- Dancing possessed man and him saying "I DON'T WANT YOUR CAT, YOU FAT PORK QUEEN!"
- The asian's guy sadface.
- Christine talking trash while digging the grave
- Any scene with the old hag was funny

I agree there. Car park was by far the best scene in the movie.

Funniest part of the movie: Involves a goat

It was funny, but the CGI lets it down.

I dunno, maybe this just isnt to my taste. If this is scary, I wonder what the hell was the last 15 minutes of REC? I supposed if rustling leaves, creaky pipes, wooshing winds, self-slamming windows, followed by a sudden and predictable appearance of an old lady, followed by a young woman being flung around the room is scary, then this is scary.

The funny parts were almost entirely made up of gross out elements. Now I like good ol' disgusting gross out scenes, but this was true PG-13 gross out scenes. If you like seeing stuff like an arm going into someone's mouth all the way, an anvil dropping on an old lady, nose spraying blood, food crying blood, most of them done with shoddy CGI, then this is for you. But I thought those belonged to the Scary Movie series.

Very uninspired.

Damn I just found out the first Evil Dead is rated NC-17! I dont really think I will like it (seeing as everyone is calling Drag Raimi's return to form ala his ED days), so I'm just going to download a xvid dvdrip and watch it later.

Anyway i think its hilarious how the skeptic in this thread enjoyed it more.

REC is scary. But there are so many kinds of horror and they get you in different ways. Heck, I'd gladly contest that Revolutionary Road and Dear Zachary were horror films as well. Perhaps the comedy took a bit from the horror, but Raimi's work were never meant to scare the shit out of you (at least that's what I think). Raimi just made Wes Craven his b****.

Also, unfortunately, these gross out scenes are also found in Evil Dead.....they aren't any grossier.

I'm an Evil Dead fan, I just didn't expect him to manage to pull that shit off without an R.

And apart from failing to see mutilated animals and sawed off body parts, it's the same Raimi.

I don't think you get the film. Sam Raimi's horror flicks doesn't focus more on the horror side. Gross out humor is like his trademark in these type of films. And referring to the post about you reply to the goat comment, I think he was referring to the goat before it was possessed because that was the funny part. Damn, that goat was just hanging around at the background. XD

Too bad the gross out humour wasnt gross out enough for me. Most of it simply dont last long enough: 2 seconds of puking and the scene is done. SPOILERS!! the eyes popping out in the anvil scene looked horribly fake! No fun. SPOILERS END!! The PG-13 rating also hurts it in my opinion. And hell yeah the unpossessed goat was funny. Cute.

I just saw Evil Dead. Enjoyed it a lot more than Drag Me. For starters, at least it had some atmosphere to it. Easy to accomplish, simply throw the characters into a shabby cottage in the middle of the woods. It is definitely scarier and more frightening than Drag Me. One thing is that it doesnt give you obvious camera angles and rustling leaves and slamming doors to tell you a fright is coming. It just comes, and is pretty effective. And while it's not as funny as Drag Me, the humour here feels so gleefully wrong! It's a B-movie, not scary, but fun, and shocking at times. I've always maintained that horror movies work better with a low-budget feel, which is why most of the new american horror movies dont work. Blair Witch and REC have a low budget and raw feel. Drag Me was a B-movie with a high-gloss finish complete with CGI. Just doesnt do it for me.

I dont love Evil Dead. I dont think I will remember it after a few weeks, but it is a decent and harmless watch (if you can stomach gore and violence). 3/5. But I'll say this: the 7 friends who hated Drag Me probably would have hated Evil Dead more. They aint the kind who can sit through a tree raping a woman. biggrin.gif
