Try NIS 2009 and you will be suprise on the memory usage. Indded, the pricing is moderately on the higher side but considering the R&D cost built in....

hi,
yes I understand your point but the comparison was pretty exterior and we are not debating on the performance and the effectiveness of the AV so the test is pretty free from controversy, IMHO but of course one should not look at this and assume Norton is less effective or quick.  cool2.gif

Hi natakaasd, I'm relatively new in LYN but I've been working in the IT industry for sometime now ... more than 10 years to be precise - just haven't had the time to share my thoughts with others so far, just my family members. And I think you're pretty knowledgeable with security technologies too. rclxms.gif

I've been doing a bit of reading on security technologies just so I can separate what is myth or hype and what is substance ... before I decide whether to continue with my Norton Internet Security subscription or switch to something else.

I think iSwift and Norton Insight has the same objective - to reduce scan speeds so there's minimal impact on the end user's performance. I know Norton Insight works on a combination of whitelisting, statistics from their large user base and behavioural analysis so there's layers of analysis before deciding whether something is good or bad ... do you know what iSwift is based on? I haven't had the chance to look it up yet .. or any resources you can point me to?

I tried KIS 7 before and it was definitely a good program then, probably one of the top during those days (only unlike you, I didn't promote it far and wide just my close ones) ... but I think KIS 2009 (or version 8) is way overrated. If you ask me, it's like Norton was in 2005 or 2006 ... complacency crept in. It's definitely not as good now and if you read VB100's analysis of their latest test, they mentioned Kaspersky as being good at detection but with high FPs so that's why it failed the latest one. Failing FPs is OK if you're a small player but when you get bigger like Kaspersky has, then it's a major issue I think.

Have you tried NIS 2009 yourself? If you have, tell me what you think of it?

Thanks.

QUOTE(natakaasd @ Oct 28 2008, 04:02 PM)
For a new guys here, daddyof4, you sure have quite some insight in this new program.

Norton Insight is similar to iSwift of Kaspersky, only thing is, it has a few more features than the usual iSwift. That is, of course mentioned by the community blog of Symantec.

Kaspersky used to be the sing-song of everyone because of people like me. We promote products that work during that time. Kaspersky had the least FPs (Other than ESET NOD32), and most extensive virus signature database. BitDefender was filled with FPs actually, or it would have been on par with Kaspersky.

Norton then had a not too bad database, but the notorious slow downs made it quite a put off. McAfee and TrendMicro is totally out of the picture.

I used to use AVIRA AntiVir as a substitute for Kaspersky as the installation is not as invasive as Kaspersky. Kaspersky 5.xx which used ADS for tagging (similar to the current iSwift and Norton Insight) BSOD my system after uninstallaion, which is a common problem then.

I have much to say, but i hope this concise history would be adequate for some questions.

~Cheers!

daddyof4,

You flatter me. I'm only a student taking a major exam, and has yet to step into what is called "IT Industry".

I daresay, I've been pursuing "Practical and Efficient Security Solutions" (aka Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware etc) for the past 5 years, so I've seen the recent ups and downs in the "Security Field". That's about it. "Knowledgeable", you say, you make me shy. biggrin.gif

I can only remember of iSwift being the ADS Solution in Kaspersky 5.xx. But in Kaspersky 6.xx Series, they no longer used the ADS method. My best bet for you is to read up in Kaspersky's Website to know more of their "methods". No matter how, they can't lie too much there. Read between the lines. smile.gif

From the reviews, it seems that Norton Insight combines the benefits of iSwift and ThreatSense (Old Timers would know of CyberHawk!), which I feel is a great leap for Norton, considering at one time Norton used to be among the Best Software Maker around, which was like 1 decade ago? biggrin.gif

Tried the software? No, not yet. As I said previously, I can only test it later, which is like another 1.5 months from now. Pretty long wait...

It's been a pleasure to talk to you, considering LYN is rather void of apt speakers, with some sense of maturity and courtesy. The good old days.

EDIT: Not that I'm saying there are no good forumers around, but it is pretty scarce of late.

~Cheers!

Yeah, it's definitely cool to have a good exchange on these things instead of just senseless posts promoting this and that brand, without any knowledge at all on how these things work - appreciate it!

All the best for your exams then - I think you'll do just fine mate!

And I'll share with you results of my research and trying NIS 2009 ... am pretty excited about it to be honest.

outdoorxplorer - Thanks for creating this thread!

I already test NIS09 (trial) on my XP, and it really runs freaky greats.
Install takes less than 2 minutes, and the new insight technology makes the scan more faster. Definition are updated every 5 minutes. Interface are cool and you sure love it.

Last week i go to LowYat Plaza, but not yet available. I want to buy lol

Hi NooB.. NAV is just an AV and NIS is the complete security suite including AV. Subscription is on annual basis. You may google for further info and perhaps you should visit www. symantec.com.

Should have thought of that lol, thank you. Isn't there any anti-virus base on permenant subscription? Or let's just say my Norton AV's subscription expire, how do i renew it? Buy another Norton AV software?
