yeah, that's a real big pity.

otherwise notos would've become very popular despite their non-prolificacy in captivity.

2 tongue.gif . As i said, that was the first ever for notos.

And nope. It shows no sign of fear, not skittish whatsoever during handling. The parents are damn skittish.

hi!
i recently got my baby star tortoise (July- its the name), i know you guys in here have a tremendous knowledge on stars (^^) so i wanted to know ur take on a few things:
1) among grocery veggies what can work best for my star's diet? i was adviced that tortoise pellets are also available and work pretty well for stars tortoise, but i haven't found any around pet shops, have u spotted any?
2)is it necessary to keep a water bowl/container in my star's tank? the shop keeper told me to avoid that because the star is more likely to just pee and poo in it and it creates too much humidity if the water is spilled.
3)does my star need constant uvb lighting on the day or can i reduce it to a few hrs in the evening? because she has to share with my sick reeve's turtle which needs it a lot, i'm providing another lamp (normal lamp bulb, rather hot though) to my star for heathing purpose right now...
4)can i handle every once in a while my star to get it used to me and become more responsive? or will it get traumatized?
i just upgraded July's tank, i actually built my own with wood and its huge (i can sit in it), but building it cost me just abt 70 rm and my hard work XP.

Added on July 7, 2009, 12:48 amoh also:
i own two baby soft shelled turtles, i'm not sure abt the type but i bought them in PJ, and they are all white and over all look like other soft shelled turtles.
i keep them in a tank almost full with water with a substrate of fine sand. thats all about the tank setting, i feed them turtle pellets and calcium supplements, they eat voraciously and one bullies the other too XD
i heard that soft shelled bask under the uvb light as other water turtles, and need a dry spot to dry off themselves. but the pet shop where i bought them kept them exactly like how i do, the shop keeper also told me these turtles don't need a basking area or strong uvb light source, i'm confused, anyone has some good advice on how to keep soft shelled happy and healthy?
thanks a lot!
ps: baby soft shelled make really amusing pets to observe but they tend to bite even as they are so tiny!!! thats even more amusing haha (yeah i'm sort of a masochist... but only when it comes to soft shelled :-p)

hey guys, do u know where can i find local species of land tortoise? and mayb a wider variety of choice for tortoise (spiny hill, impressed tortoise, asian browns, elongated etc), cos i tend to see mostly sulcatas and star tortoises in petshops...
my gf would like to buy one, but she is afraid of keeping a star because they are very delicate (and expensive), and she has no budget for a sulcata... haiz.
btw: are aladabra tortoise considered as a protected specie in malaysia? cos i see that quite a few ppl in the us keep them, while i never heard of anyone keeping them in malaysia...

i c, so if they are protected how can tortoises be marketed in malaysia? star tortoise are smuggled illegally to msia from india thats a fact, in india they are considered a protected species and technically they cannot even be exported abroad... but we still get them... so how does it work for other species of tortoise (especially the local ones)?

There are breeders but I dont think any breeder will sell theirs for say RM 50 a pc !!! (Istar retail for about RM 100 )

As breeding Chelonian needs lots of effort - diet , husbandry ...etc And most chelonian needs quite a while to mature !!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know a local sp you can get cheap ie less than RM 50 a pc - Malayan Box @ Ambo even CB dont command that high price

license can be only be issued to specimens with CITES documents.

as for locals (impressa, emys etc) the only way you can get CITES documents for them is to import legal specimens from oversea.

as for the question of "how can tortoises be marketed in malaysia?" - it's just like trading/owning illegal dvds, nobody cares until someone report to the authorities.

LOL... most is for food, a few for pet.

through experience, i would say that elongata would most probably be problematic if a male of aggressive disposition is placed in the same enclosure with other male elongata, forsteni or travancorica. (aka bloodbath)

they won't bother other tortoises (emys, etc) but some do show aggression towards cats, turkeys, peacocks, stupid little nephew...

dispositions vary greatly - some males are very tolerant. and yeah, they are easy.

Put a young Male M.e.phayrei (8 - 12 inch works best ) into the enclosure to knock some sense into him !!

Try that and he will know to keep away from anything black for a while !!
