dear sifus and taikos,

i have few questions to ask regarding budget for a dslr..

when buying a dslr what are the hidden cost that should i allocate in my budget? i.e: extra batteries, extra storage, reliable tripod, flashgun. i don't see many ppl discussed about it in the internet in my research. Pls enlighten me... thanks in advance..

IMO newbie like me tongue.gif no need xtra storage, 4GB will do and will shoot until u crazy... just get a better lens than the kitlens

hidden costs? plenty.

The most "bad" hidden cost is yourself and your suceptibility to poison from fellow forumers. (esp viking. He's very BAD poisoner)

Worst of it all is that you buy cheap SLR, then later you upgrade to this, that and then more upgrade and then even more upgrade and before you know it, already RM30K spent!

Indeed, like what myjunk said. The hidden cost comes from you yourself. The more you can resist, the lesser cost are involved. Unfortunately, you poison shield gets weaker and weaker each time you joined our TT. biggrin.gif

no worry here. my immune system is very strong. not easily poisoned. hehe..
can u all pls make a simple list of what are the necessities when u own a dslr..

for example

1. camera + lens
2. flashgun
3. etc2..

if possible put some explaination.. haha.. i never realise that i'm so fussy until writing this..

my budget is around 3.5k and i'm planning to buy 450d.. at this moment i don't need a flashgun because i can borrow my brother in-law's flash if i need one..

For that budget.
If you want the best for ya body, get a used Canon EOS 40D and IS kitlens

If you want the best for ya lens, get a used Canon EOS 450D and start with Tammy 17-50mm f2.8 and EF 50mm f1.8

Get the 450D from raymanlucas lah. He's selling. can save a bit.


All in all this is what I would surmise

Camera : 5D Mark III RM9K
Flash : Canon 580 EX III RM 1.7K
Battery Grip : Canon BG-EX RM800
2x Battery : RM400
CF Card : 2x 16GB Sandisk RM1.4K
Lens : Canon 85L + 70-200 L IS RM 12K

Total Damage = RM30K(??)

Result? Still bad photographer!! whistling.gif whistling.gif

(Edit : Like me, although I don't have the Mark III yet)

on a more serious note -> depends on what you want to shoot and how much you want to spend. (in the long run)

Recommend 40D for best bet so you won't need to upgrade then get a 4GB CF (RM80 or so i think)
Tripod + Bag + filter will be free with camera anyway
