tytons: did you use tripod to shoot the river photo to get the effect? Nice effect you have there.

tytons : Great looking river. Now to answer your question. I don't mind the wb settings because I still shoot raw in any case. (Also the reason why I'm a bit slow to post/process my pics)

The better camera (40D) will have better WB adjustments in terms of in camera tweakings, but ultimately, if you shoot RAW, not much use I would say.

Go Flickr Pro? next? next? Next? from what i see, if go pro also will have to click next/next/next right? Is there another way? I honestly do not know there is a difference with normal acc and pro acc. Is there?
*

Flickr Pro vs normal is Pro has the below
1) unlimited photos, normal only 200
2) unlimited set and collection, normal only 3 sets no collection
3) maximum resolution available, normal is limited to 1024

nothing special, no trick, just shoot good image. I would think that lens make a difference also, but again, no magical lens there, i don't want to get banned for shouting on my lenses like the other guy.

please correct me if i'm wrong
blue packaging = multi-coating
green packaging = uncoated/zero-coating

circular polarizing filter (CPL for short) is great for landscape photography if you're looking for better contrast and to make the sky more blue. also great for cutting off/increase reflections from glass/water.
again, please correct me if i'm wrong. i actually have these in my bag, but always forget to use them or couldn't be bothered at all hehe. i'm afraid i don't have much opinion on them but i'm very sure they would very useful.

anyway, i'm quite close in getting my wifey a 400D but what's everyone's opinion on the options below:
1) get a brand new 400D body only + 1yr warranty for RM1900
2) get a used 400D only + BG-E3 grip + extra batteries + zero warranty for RM1800
3) scrap the above and get something else for wifey's tiny hands

400D suits a tiny hand right? if were to choose between 1 n 2, i'll take 2. something else, if she dun complain on the performance of PNS, then i guess you have many choices there

one thing i find that i will always consider is the olympus mju series, those you can use underwater. it offers something else that my slr cannot.

why 2? please share your thoughts on this one, petre. smile.gif

i happen to have 58mm and 67mm CPL filters. both were gifts from somebody. haven't had the chance to try them out yet. tongue.gif

olympus mju series is very nice but how often do you shoot underwater? and they use XD memory cards right? unsure.gif

ic3kacang: the front element (glass) of each lens comes in different sizes. the 50mm, 55mm, 67mm etc. indicate the diameter. when you purchase a filter, you have to make sure it matches your lens. hope this helps. smile.gif

ic3kacang : rule of thumb, the bigger the better, this is because the bigger the diameter, the more lights can get through. Of course not to be mistaken, there are also 50mm which also mean the focal length in which the smaller number is wider (e.g. 18mm) while the bigger number is more to the tele end (e.g. 200mm, 300mm, 600mm)

Petre : i got myself cokin filters, one size fits all, u need to buy the adaptor only.

krooger : i thought blue is normal UV while green is Hoya Multi-Coated (HMC) ?

Vincet Pang:

Taken from camerafilters.net - Hoya Filters are in aluminum anodized rings. Glass is held in place by a snap ring. Made in Japan.. Except Linear Polarizer's are made in the Philippines. Hoya also supplies an economy line of camera filters in a Green Box these area also made in the Philippines. The Green series are available only in Skylight, UV and Circular Polarizer's. The Green Series is a non coated filter. This is very popular filter with sellers selling on auction sites.

Taken from 2filter.com - Hoya has 5 different grades of filters in UV's. EXCEL( XL)) Green Series, The Hoya green series do not have any optical coatings, not made in Japan. All other Hoya filters use clear glass sometimes called water glass. They come in Mono coated (single anti reflective coatings) Multi-coating (several layers of anti reflective coatings) called HMC, Pro-1 Digital (DMC) and Super MC (SMC) with 5 layers of Multi coatings on each side. The Super MC's have the best coating we have ever seen, 99.7% transmission of light.

Basically, the green packaging is just a cheapo/budget filter without any special coating.

first, figure out a budget. then, find out what you can get with your budget.
then you can narrow down your choices but don't entirely ignore second-hand ones as well.
after that.... actually i'm really bad at giving purchasing advice hehe.

i wanted to say get the cheapest one you can afford first and build your skills from that.
once you have found out the limitations of your dslr/lens, you will know what you need next
e.g. better lenses, external flash, battery grip, etc. etc. you can learn a lot from reading but
you can learn even more with a dslr in your hands. smile.gif

now does that one sound better?
