Astro new model will be called astro plus (lame name by given by an indian. personally i think mine is better but they dun want to give me the tv price). shiny black little box about the size of philip silver box only slightly bigger but not as big as max with 160gb capacity. How many hours? I don't know what but about 3 to 4 days 24 hour recording. So calculate urself. Launched by march next year, hopefully. Still in testing. Lot of functionality. Can't said much coz it is secret. Oh and it didn't hang a lot like max except it start damn slow. About 3 minutes until you can c the video.

Got HD capability but the HD service won't be around perhaps by mid 2009 or end of 2009. So keep ur finger cross that astro higher up will c the light at the end of the tunnel. Oho.

The price? Heh, it will be very very out of normal range. Heard it will be more than 2k. Is it worth it?

Works like max and old box. All the function is there but got extra one such as:

1. Can record 2 channel at once. Uiyoo. Though you can only 1 of the channel only. Eg. U record hbo and cinemax so u can watch either hbo or cinemax if you decided to record 2 at a time since all tuner in use. Other word u cannot change to ria without canceling one of the recording.

2. You are tuned to HBO and watch a movie from beginning without changing channel. Then you want to go aftv. U pressed record button. Voila the decoder save the recording starting from the moment u tuned to HBO. On max it will save starting from the time u press record. Or you watch a cartoon on ceria whatever. then u go out play play without turning off the box. u came back and found out u miss 1 whole episode. Press left on channel info and u can watch/record the missing episode!!.

3. U want to record a series for example AOD episode 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. With just 1 button setting, a green button, u can record the whole series automatically on the fly. Miss 1 eps? Turn off box? It will auto record when the missing series on air. No matter what, the whole series will be in the box unless u cancel or delete.

4. New pay per view which i won't go into detail. Suffice to say the box will recommend a movie and ask if you want to watch it or not.

Mmmm. What else? Component output/hd output. No hdmi though. No dolby optical output but have digital output. Got ethernet input. no rf output anymore.

Nice move by ASTRO. However I find that 2k for that new Decoder isn't worth it. For those who are looking for cheaper alternatives , its possible. The cheapest alternative would be to replace your current A$TRO decoder with a DreamBox (it runs Linux). Plus it has Ethernet output , meaning that you can link it to your home network and record shows in your Network Area Storage or in your PC/Server. On top of that its possible to "stream" Live Astro Feeds to your Windows Mobile (PDAs) , smartphone and other devices in your house and even in the Internet (Imagine , you watching your ASTRO shows on the go. That's something cool). However it doesn't come with a HDD , and configuring it might be pain in the butt as you'll be dealing with command line and confugring it here and there. I've read that its possible to watch Two channels at once with 1 ASTRO Smartcard , however its just a proof of concept and I'll not discuses it any further ! (Its against the law). Has Native EPG/Guide from ASTRO. I think it can be even configured to record serials automatically

So thats by replacing the decoder and it costs you roughly around RM 500

Well , besides that we have Windows Media Center/MythTV/PVR software for PC to record shows . This is what I am doing right now , pretty much a PC is capable of being this new ASTRO Plus service. Of course the first step isn't possible as you'll be needing two decoders and two TV Tuners which is bit expensive. The second step is possible as these PVR programs . automatically records (even though you aren't recording it from the moment you tune it ino the channel , its used for time-shifting thingy but it does record). Its also possible to record the entire serial , just select record series and these programs automatically does that for you. So I don't see the need of this decoder. However , I may consider it if ASTRO switches some of their programs to EDTV , that is in progressive scan for certain channels

Those who are looking for cheap alternative to build your own ASTRO Max/Plus/<insert name here> , should consider reading this

http://www.terencey.net/blog/?p=65

However for those of us would like to get things , just work out of the box. Then this new box would do the trick

I like Astro bringing in TiVo's concept here, but it's still a long way to go before converting Malaysians to use the features.

Recording programs is nice as we're not glued in front of the TV 24/7, so sometimes missed it and no replay it'll be kinda disappointing.

AstroMax can record up to 60 hours, right? Good for those who wants to record the drama series. I wonder whether can copy those recorded vids into DVD or computer? I guess that'll be illegal huh.

Heard that dreambox cannot be used anymorein the future since they will be using new encryption. Cannot confirmed on this yet.

Wish that it can be done but those recordings in the hard disk are encrypted. Of course it is illegal but first you need to break the encryption.

on question why no hdmi or digital output from the decoder, i think this got to do with the number of LCD/PLASMA TV in malaysia ... the initial astro decoder is to cater for CRT TV 10 years ago when it was launched. unless the number of LCD/PLASMA become a lot and insignificant of CRT TV used by people, astro will come out with digital decoder box. This is what i think ....

Not adding HDMI is lame when even cheapo RM249 LG DVD players are HDMI upscaling. It's just not right passing on obsolete set-top boxes at RM2k to the consumer just because they enjoy a monopoly. HDMI satellite receivers are plentiful and cheap in Europe. And Astro is probably just reusing an old, old Thomson or Humax model. sad.gif

For 2000 ringgit i can get myself a decent 32" LCD screen. No thanks astro. No hdmi really kills the deal especially with decoders nowadays using hdmi rather than the digital optical output.

Sad. Astro should put in HDMI to the decoder. My TV's component connector is already occupied by my Wii(since that's the best a Wii can do). A HDMI port would be a good choice since the one on my TV is unoccupied.

Nope. Ur hdmi will be occupied the next time u buy bluray player.

More likely I'd buy a blu-ray drive for my HTPC since that machine has a Dell 2405FPW display on DVI and a SonicGear Enzo 4000 5.1 kit. Plus, I think composite maximum output is 480i and 576i (since 480p option not selectable on Wii when using composite cable). If watch HD through composite it's a moot point because resolution get downscaled.

Maybe I can get a VGA box, since the TV has VGA port and support 1360x768 resolution. Anyone know a good VGA box that can transcode 720p/1080i to that resolution?
