I couldnt find a general guideline for this issue here, so this new topic

I got a 4yo @ris laptop, with a fried gpu chip (ATI mobility radeon), so the screen is filled with artefacts all the time now

knowing that the company that distributes/handles the warranty and repairs no longer exist, is there any chance i can get it fixed in a 'general' laptop repair shop?

yeah, im fully aware of the:

'no spare parts available'
'laptop need very specific parts'
'aiyah, thats a very OOOOOLLDDDD model'
'buy new one even cheaper than fixing that junk'

issues, so im just pushing my luck if anyone knows a place i can get it fixed biggrin.gif

thanks in advance

if the repair/replacement cost costs around 300, i'd be happy to pay for it.

i will get a new lappy. i just dont want to 'waste' this old one just because of the gpu problem (if its fixable). at 1.6ghz with a good amount of ram and decent gpu, i can still use it for daily netsurfing/office stuffs/down-the-memory-lane-cs-sessions

i pried open the cover back then, and i can clearly see a bit of a burnt mark on the gpu chip. tried finding the chip on ebay/net but to no avail

is there a 'generic shop' in kl that you can just send in a broken lappy, instead of a particular service centre which only cater to specific brand/model?

it's gonna cost u the bomb for sure, when the gpu chip is fried that mean the mobo need to be change. N laptop mobo is
really expensive. It gonna cost u more than rm500 easily. Better buy new laptop.

ye ke `no longer exists`?

@ris website...

mana-mana laptop lepas 3 years tak digalakkan repair kerana bayangkan lepas habiskan rm 300 utk repair GPU itu nanti macam mana pula keyboard rosak? atau optical drive ada masalah?

@ris tak ramai orang pakai dan gunakan ia.....jadi jika ada apa masalah pun kena pergi ke center sana. rclxub.gif

to all:

thanks for the info! thot the thread was dead after blackamikaze post

hmm, for me, spending 300 bucks to keep it running for another 2 or 3 years would be worth it. the laptop spec is quite decent. it had served me too well to be left 4 dead.. hehehe. i'm getting a new lappie anyhow

yeah, lappies these days come very cheap, but they dont build them tough like old days. same for handphones, pc's, cars... eh everything la heheh

to chapit:

i wrote that because i read somewhere about an @ris owner saying the HQ is already closed, so i didnt even bother googling it. the info you've given sure help! thanks!

continuing the @ris saga..

so i called the numbers listed on the page, most of them are dead. the service centre in muar (ma hometown) suggested the distributor (did not pick up the phone), and the one in JB suggested another centre in JB

went to lowyat the other day, there was this lappie service centre (cant remember which floor) w/o my laptop, just jalan2. after some explaining, the guy said rm300 (haha), but im a bit disappointed with his attitude mad.gif

haha, im writing this as if anyone cares
