What do you think the future of Linux will be, or what do you think the future of Linux should be in your mind.Do you think Linux can break the 1 % desktop market share and become like microsoft windows. just keep the discussion on the mainstream desktop market not on server market.

I believe Linux market share will be improving and so as other OS like Mac OS. Thanks to crappy Vista ...

Windows will lose it domination one day if MS can't come up a good OS. We will back to era where no single OS dominating the market, if you can still recall, we used have OS/2 and other OS in the market (not just Windows).

really hope Linux as a whole community can improve the user's experience like those Mac OS X. I really hope that more hardware players can release more linux drivers or improve the existing linux drivers by participating and contributing in existing projects.

i'd say it will increase but not so fast i suppose.

i think Ubuntu made a huge impact and now with more distributions inspired by Ubuntu's success.

As a non-adopter (yet..but I'll elaborate) I'm hoping for a very good long term outlook for Linux the OS, devs and communities in general. Yeah Vista at this point has "successfully" managed to make me blurt out a good "ok..that's f***ing it -/-***! I'm not paying for version changes anymore!" even if I have to somewhat sacrifice my casual gaming habits. And I think that's the the exact operative term here..gaming. Which seems to be the major mental hurdle for would be switchers but of course that comes second to ease of use. I'm roughly studying and reading daily additions to my bookmarks about Linux for dummies, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, OpenSUSE and Mandriva to narrow down between those distros. I'm particularly still worried about drivers' support for certain hardwares but it seems that a recent news of AMD's renewed focus to come out with better helping hands for its ATI drivers are a very very good sign. So to conclude:-
- I hope that the amount of brainpower and sheer dedication in all of Linux community out there can and will close down the ease of use gap between the more prominent OSes in the near future.

- It's only a matter of time since guys like AMD are throwing their weight behind Linux. I hope that on the software side like Adobe that they can do the same thing as well. There's still that not so welcoming Flash issue going around but I trust that it's a doable matter hopefully.

- To me it's not necessarily about financial costs. If it's possible to see locally appointed distributors who can move and mail boxed packages of any distros out there even to a tune of max RM100.00 per version I'd pay for it. I'm not kidding. Better that for purchases than paying RM300.00++ upwards for something that has to annoy me with periodic reinstalls and on the phone product activations.

Here's to a bright future where everyone are entitled to participate in modern computing with low cost of entry, upkeep and superior reliability.

I would say linux is gaining popularity. More and more Dell users are opting for Ubuntu as the bundled OS instead of Windows. Also, it was nice to see that Asus has begin to include linux device drivers together with their motherboard. Namely, the ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe WiFi motherboard.

With many big industrial players providing improved support for linux, all seems well for the future of linux except for a few rough edges. For instance, 2D performance on the proprietary nvidia binary has been awful (Try running gtkperf to see what i mean). Plus, there's no XvMc support for 8 series card yet. shakehead.gif

Hmm... i think it is possible to be like Microsoft.
Because linux is more user friendly. Whatever can open in Window, linux should be no prob to open now.
If users need MAC OS X interface, linux also can provide that type of interface as well.

So i think linux will be like microsoft and get the market.

If Microsoft keeps releasing horrible systems like Vista/based on Vista, along with distro's like Ubuntu making it easier for newbies to pick up Linux.. definitely. Vista was the OS that made me as an MCP myself decide to drop Windows as my primary desktop OS.. because honestly, once Microsoft releases their next OS and drops support for XP you're going to have to buy it sooner or later :/

Furthermore, I'm not really into the concept where >20% of my system resources are used for the OS GUI itself lol

unless some groups came up with a UI as good as apple, and large companies created good running software as good as office, linux will continue to grow only on current rate, which to me is still slow adoption.

i get paid for supporting linux in oil&gas company smile.gif

This could increase the number of Linux users in Malaysia too tongue.gif The problem we have here is that even though Linux is free, piracy is rampant and that just removes the benefits of open source software. If they clamp down on it I'm sure we'll see more users migrating platforms tongue.gif

I am running on 3 ori OS and honestly :

I trust my work with a Mac
I fully support open source Ubuntu
I love the diversity of Vista

On my time allocation, i spend most of it on Vista tweaking, testing, working & modifying both on hardware+software.

On genuine copies all 3 is silky smooth & on the contrary, my kernel upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 crashed compiz.

I would say desktop linux got long way to go..
You see.. users normally tend use something which is familiar.. n most of pc users are windows based. As for business sector, lot of ppl mite think twice using linux desktop bcos lack of technical support especially in malaysia.. anywy vista isnt tht bad i would say market nid some time to adapt.. juz like when windows XP launched. Look now, majority of ppl using windows XP. i'm not saying tht linux dun hav future.. perhaps not for desktop yet but for sure linux for server definitely got future..
