2012 is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Roland Emmerich. The film has an ensemble cast, including John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Woody Harrelson. The film will be distributed by Columbia Pictures. Filming began in August 2008 in Vancouver. 2012 is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2009.

Plot

An academic researcher leads a group of people in a fight to counteract the apocalyptic events that were predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar

John Cusack as Jackson Curtis, a divorced writer who occasionally works as a limousine driver.
Amanda Peet as Kate, Jackson's ex-wife.
Thomas McCarthy as Gordon, Kate's current boyfriend and a plastic surgeon.
Danny Glover as President Wilson, the President of the United States.
Thandie Newton as Laura Wilson, the First Daughter.
Oliver Platt as Carl Anheuser, the President's Chief of Staff.
Chiwetel Ejiofor as Adrian Helmsley, scientific adviser to the President.
Woody Harrelson as a man who prophesies the end of the world and is considered crazy by others also has his own cable access show. Harrelson compared his character to the mythological Greek figure Cassandra, whose predictions were dismissed.
Ng Chin Han as Lin Pang, a worker in Tibet.
Morgan Lily as Lilly Curtis, Jackson and Kate's daughter.

Production

Director Roland Emmerich and composer-producer Harald Kloser co-wrote a spec script titled 2012, which was marketed to major studios in February 2008. Nearly all studios met with Emmerich and his representatives to hear the director's budget projection and story plans, a process that the director had previously gone through with the films Independence Day (1996) and The Day After Tomorrow (2004). The film was shopped around with a production budget of $200 million. Later in the month of February, Sony Pictures Entertainment won over other studios the bid for the spec script and will distribute it under Columbia Pictures. The studio plans to make the film for less than the estimated budget.

Filming was originally scheduled to begin in Los Angeles, California, in July 2008, but instead commenced in Vancouver in August 2008. Due to the possible 2008 Screen Actors Guild strike, filmmakers set up a contingency plan for salvaging the film. Sony Pictures Imageworks was hired to create visual effects for 2012.

Marketing

The studio released a teaser trailer for 2012 that showed a tsunami coming over the Himalayas and interlaced a message about the world's governments not preparing its population for the end of the world. The trailer ended with a message to viewers to "find out the truth" by searching on Google for "2012". The Guardian criticized the marketing approach as "deeply flawed" since the film was not mentioned among the first few search engine results. The studio also launched a viral website published by the fictional organization Institute for Human Continuity where visitors could register for a lottery number to be part of a small population that would be rescued from global destruction.

True but they certainly miss out on the LOW possibility of Ice Age =X

i actually dislike roland's works

will probably give this movie a miss.

I knew about 2012 a long time ago... heck, I have 'theories' on it...

My most favourite....
"It has been said that the alien mothership that is stationed in Saturn's belt will arrive. It is 4 km long ship, its up to us humans whether want to follow them or not. These aliens have been around since before christ... watching over our planet since then. They send 'pods' or 'UFOs' to see us closer."

"The world reaches 'critical' level, polution, toxicity, etc. is at a ridiculous level. Heck, the air is no longer invisible, but truly has colour !"

"The ground shakes (perhaps a mighty earthquake, as if Pangea trying to form again...) and cities will just fall through it."

"End of a Mayan calendar - for some reason, scholars believe this date to be 'the most significant' even in human history according to the Mayans... but still they're not sure what is going to happen."

Oh no dudes, there have been 'other' dominant species on this planet, but they 'NEVER' destroy our planet as we are doing right now...

The dinosaurs ? They didn't build cities and polute the air.

The caveman ? They didn't have technology to do any sort of damage to the environment.

What else? We are the only species on this planet that are literally "EATING" it ourselves... and the graph of 'destruction' is exponential...

At the end of 2009, the pollution would have gotten bad.

At the end of 2010, wow, the pollution reaches dangerous levels.

At the end of 2011, the Earth is literally breaking apart.

At the end of 2012, it all ends for Humans...

Let alone 'dominant' species take over our planet...

In a way, I do believe 'something' will happen during that time. Did I believe in the 1999 thingy ? No. Did I believe in the planets alligning something big will happen? No. Come to think of it, its as if HUMANS ARE UNSTOPPABLE WHEN IT COMES TO THE ENVIRONMENT"

And don't get me started on 'humans literally killing humans' for glory... So much for God's creation...

LOL at the word "(fake)", and thanks for the clip calvin, but still not buying it XD.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention as well, I was thinking of "why can't anyone do a film about the 2012 event" and THEN... I was like "I think the best title would be like '2012', like 10,000 BC"... OMG.... maybe its a coincidence, just days later after thinking about it and giving it my own suitable title, its reality !

And not to mention I thought about Roland Emmerich as well, since he was the 'king of disaster films'... 'Indepence Day' and 'Day After Tommorow'... '10,000 BC' was fine just that the story line was thinner than air.



Is something really gonna happen in 2012?

If it does... let's watch the film '2012' to see what does happen if the film does what is going to happen...

Hollywood has been capitalising on world ending catastrophes for a while now, with disappointing results. Which is why I'm so not expecting much from 2012, both the year and the film. I got over that that Mayan calendar hur-hur years ago anyway.

Now if you excuse me, I'm off to another forum to troll people with the end-of-the-world-in-2012 crap with great effect.
