IIANM u cant do dual boot by installing xp after finishing Vista installation, if install xp first, then its ok
and its recommended to do dual boot in diff partition (xp n vista in diff partition)

Usually Windows XP must be installed first (mean older must be installed first), then u install Windows Vista. They must be installed on different partition.

Suggested app to do it without reformatting Vista

http://www.vistabootpro.org/

and the useful guide here:

http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/about92429.html

Hint:Make sure VBR is installed in Vista 1st before proceeding to install XP. Once XP installation is done, follow the guide and nail down the dual boot procedure before continuing setting up your XP install

I've done before on my girlfriends notebook.

Windows vista itself can create partition without formatting one, so I created an empty partition.

Installed XP on the partition, then later did something to bring up the bootloader. Some software I think forgotten what already.

Try search google, I also learn from google 1 haha.
