well i been searching for answer about my topic but can't find out the solution. maybe get the wrong keywords. hope u guys can give me an answer. well i'm planning to install a time machines and make a boot device in eSata harddisk. anyway as i know time machines and boot device is working with firewire. but i just want to ask is it possible to install in a eSata harddisk ?

If you have a supported eSATA interface on your Mac then yes, you can use it as a Time Machine disk with the proper drivers. Which eSATA card are you using out of curiosity?

Booting however is probably not going to work.

i'm using macbook pro, i'm think to add a eSata express card so that to run my extra harddisk. well if can setup the time machines in eSata harddisk is not a bad new for me also. anyway booting device i just ask only. haha. currently still using os x tiger cause planning to upgrade. so just before confirm those application i'm using still working fine with leopard that's y i just ask about the boot device.

but now i had one more question, can bootcamp install in other harddisk other than the main harddisk or bootcamp partition is a must to install with the OS X ?

Boot camp can only be installed on the internal drive for some reason.

alright get what u mean then. anyway i had firewire800 enclosure and harddisk as well. making a boot device should be fine.

Hi suiryuu, it is not a MUST to have firewire capable ext HDD to use Time Machine because i am using Time Machine with my ext USB HDD. =D

I totally agree. I am doing the same as well but then funny thing is I have different partitions in my external HDD. Sharing NTFS and Mac OS Extended in the same HDD.

boot camp design architecture wont allow you install windows in external drive.
we try b4, it failed.

i think as long as you had the eSata driver install, then that should be fine, you com enable to detect the HDD

use firewire800, it's good enough

are you using WD Mybook Studio?

actually that one boot device i mean is to install another OS X to my external firewire. not the bootcamp. i'm planning to upgrade to leopard that's y i ask is it possible time machines backup with eSata harddisk and asking is it possible to make a boot device using eSata as well.

boot camp is just my pass by idea to ask future only. hehe

no i'm not using mybook studio, i'm using those 2.5" inch firewire800. because i study over state, and back to hometown need though air. so is quite heavy for me to carry those 3.5" harddisk.

I've never tried booting off an eSATA before. AFAIK, PowerPC Macs by default can only boot externally via FireWire.

Intel Macs can use USB too.

question is, how do you connect the eSATA to your Mac?

booting from express slot could be problem i think (assume you get esata thru express slot)
i dont think it can, cuz you computer only able to read the driver once you in the OS, if you computer can't read driver, it wont appear as esata port.

booting os thru firewire is no prob, tried b4

anyway, i'm quite interested on your HDD

well i'm using macbook pro so that's y i need eSata express card. well so is it working ? huh even intel mac can work with USB boot ? interesting but i know that is not fast enough for me.

yeah i also tried to boot with firewire b4, but just asking does it work another way around with eSata. well i'm not using those kind brand product, i just bought the firewire 800 enclosure from ebay and put a 250GB into it, so can i know are u using firewire 400 or 800 ? and are you using mybook series ? and if yes mind to tell me is it oxford chipset ?

Fire400 only

Fire800 should be no prob


maybe you should try out esata thing
does you macbook pro able to detect your express slot as esata port while booting
then you should know the answer

well now all i had is just the external harddisk with firewire enclosure, that's y i ask here to confirm instead of i buy all those eSata express card and eSata harddisk then the result is can't. that time my money burned.

very simple test. do you need to install drivers for the eSATA card to work.
yes = forget this idea, can't work as it is now
no = good, now for the next test.

get back to us here...

well no i haven't bought the eSata express card yet. so i can't test out. so if anyone do, do share in this thread pls. thx

you know what, we both did the same thing. i've got 3 different partitions in my ext HDD. FAT32, NTFS and Mac OS Journaled. =P
