About Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Malaysia



Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is the first offshore campus of Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia (Curtin Western Australia). Located in Miri, Sarawak, Curtin Sarawak is the first foreign university campus to be set up in East Malaysia.



Curtin’s reputation for excellence in the South East Asian region provided the basis for Sarawak State Government’s initiative to invite Curtin to establish an international university in Sarawak. Curtin Sarawak has been actively involved in Malaysian education for the past two decades and the establishment of Curtin Sarawak’s campus ensures that it will continue to increase its contributions towards excellence in Malaysian tertiary education.



Curtin Sarawak’s operations in Miri, Sarawak commenced in February 1999. In 2002, the new purpose-built campus in a garden opened, which is a world-class facility where stylish architecturally designed buildings complement state-of-the-art equipment and facilities coupled with sophisticated IT linkages to provide students access to the resources of Curtin, Western Australia. In November 1999, Curtin Sarawak was awarded the Multimedia Super Corridor status and was renewed in 2006.



Miri, Sarawak



Sarawak, on the north-western part of Borneo Island, is the largest, and may be considered the richest, of the 13 states / territories in the Federation of Malaysia. Miri is a modern, developed, safe city with modern infrastructure, excellent hotels and restaurants, comprehensive local and international banking facilities, multi-storey shopping malls as well as traditional stores and simpler craft and produce markets selling local specialties. Originally an oil town, Miri is now more renowned for its natural attractions and heritage and is becoming increasingly popular as an adventure / ecotourism destination. Miri enjoys warm equatorial weather with plenty of sunshine all year round. It is well serviced by road and air links and caters for regular flights to Kuching (the state capital) and Kuala Lumpur (the national capital) where travellers get connecting flights overseas.

The population of 230,000 people consists mainly of Chinese, Malay, Dayaks and various other ethnic groups. Bahasa Malaysia or Malay is the national language, however, English and Chinese are widely used in tourism and business. The people of Sarawak have a reputation for their warmth, friendliness and hospitality.




Living in MIRI

Miri Resort City is the gateway to northern Sarawak. Miri Airport receives flights from Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Bahru and Labuan coupled with other interstate flights from Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and other smaller airports in and around Miri.

Miri’s calendar of festivals reflects the city’s multi-cultural society as it is home to a large number of Sarawak native communities with many colourful cultural events held where everyone celebrates with fun and joy.

It offers an array of exciting lifestyles with well-maintained, neatly trimmed and clean public parks, walkways and playgrounds and is surrounded by National Parks, some within driving distance for day trips.

Miri has in place excellent public amenities, medical facilities and financial institutions. It has a general hospital, polyclinics, two private hospitals and many other private medical and dental clinics

i see`~ wanna know bout miri town. got how many shopping centre that's nice? Hmm..and miri got pro saloon? where does it located at?haha.
miri got any nice food?

Im from miri too~ This thursday will going KL~ hehe. See town ah , old town very hot and many aged ppl. Im sure u will sweating at there haha. Shopping complex got few , Boulevard , Parkson , Imperial mall. For other mall not so famous is Servay and some others depend on ur place , If nearby curtin is "E-MART" lol haha.
Pro saloon is Alan saloon and Kelvin. Others i don think so , and must ask director or boss cut , if not ur hair will really sux like mine T.T" coz boss not there and i cut with other stylist then hair so stupid.
Food? Got money sure got nice food , go for hotel dinner n buffet. If wana reasonable food , then got few like pong cafe , ming cafe , others. cant memorize in short time haha. Don eat seafood , coz miri are more expensive if compare with sabah there ~ Anyway take care and good luck , u staying in curtin villa or curtin village?

EquinoX answered the part on shopping complex and pro saloons. Food wise, I think there are alot of places u can visit. High class of course its the 'restaurants' and hotels. =) Mariott Buffet is AWESOME, but its costly. I like Pongs Cafe cos its cheap and HUGE in portion. Ok I always go here, Faradale Cafe. Find it, and try the things there for dinner, as in call in dishes. Its SUPER DUPER CHEAP. But, The longest time i waited was like 1.5 hour =/ but yeah its worth waiting.

I think seafood in miri is quite reasonable =/ Quite cheap though. haha.



*oh yeah, try pasar malam at seberkas there on friday and sat night.*

u staying in curtin villa or curtin village?<--villa, because its cheap. But still not sure yet, Curtin not yet confirmed me that villa got place for me. my friends say that villa better, because there's a mart very near.

I am studying at curtin now and staying at villa. Got anything can ask me.

I am currently studying in Curtin Sarawak and also from Sabah. Well, all i have to say is... be prepare for the life there... It can be REALLY boring sometimes... The university is situated 30mins bus trip from the town. You might find exciting in your first time in town but will get bored soon because the shopping mall is quite small compare to kk. In every tuition free week, i came back kk because really cannot tahan stay there for one week without going to school or any activities. UNLESS, you have transportation. That's a different story. Well, this is just my experience there. Hope you have a nice schooling there. Btw, Villa is better because its much much more convenient than Village.

mariott buffet is quite exp =/ around uh, i think i had discount back then, so i paid around 50? Faradale cafe is super cheap. I called like 4-5 dishes, and it's around 20-30+ in total =/

yeah, cos curtin is situated very very far away =/ and miri is just a smal town =) but i find it very nice and cozy, not a busy life compared to KL, if shopping wise i say u go kl or those big metropolitans, cos miri only has boulevard xD (parkson for entertainments)

the internet line(deconexion, operated by other isp) installed by uni very poor. ok ok only.

and ya, villa much better cz nearer to shoplots. altho theres much better choice to stay in other places, about RM300 fully furnished.

transportation is not really a problem as curtin provides bus services to the student. every 15-1 hour per trip from housing area to curtin depends on peak time or not.

as for a trip to down town, theres Miri busses(66) around too, not much a hassle if u know how.

best if u know some local student and make fren with them. they will bring u go gai gai. no nid take bus.

RM1 kolok mee can be eaten at Lutong market only. Other than there, all are Rm2.30-Rm2.50....

any comment about swinburne sarawak?n i need help on some question
