It definitely is... moreover considering the price.Anyway... Nikon has a way to make even their lower end lenses sharper than the competition. Eg. 18-55 kit lens, 18-135, 18-70 and 55-200/VR. All are sharp lenses for the price. Not to mention the recently revived 24-120VR.

Had the 50mm AFD f.18 for a while as well. It's a sharp sharp lens, but the manual focus isn't that good. It's not damped enough. But still way better than the kit lens though.

As for manual focusing, model shoots and still life is fine, BUT, for most other types of photography, I really do prefer to get the 30mm Sigma for a normal lens for the DX sensor because of its auto focusing. I usually go for walks at night (yes, night time street shooting) where fast AF and large aperture (f1.4) is required. No way manual focusing can work on such situations. I'll take too long and lose the moment.

The 50mm is a very affordable way to get a fast lens. Once you experience the DOF at f1.8 and the ability to shoot in very little light, there's no turning back biggrin.gif
