nope it can't be transferred via iTunes.

as far as i know u can only view it under email, and there's no 3rd party app to view it. or edit it. only PDF file can be opened outside the Mail app.

btw, better wait for this june's AppStore. microsoft also got interest in iPhone SDK, so let's hope for some Office goodness developed for the iPhone. i'm missing my Office too.

SDK = Software Development kit. iPhone SDK is the kit released by Apple so developers can create the software based on the framework. and the softwares created from this SDK will be only released through the new AppStore.

yup u can transfer file into iPhone. u can use SSH or iPhoneBrowser. iPhoneBrowser will be easy to use as for beginners. u can find it here
http://code.google.com/p/iphonebrowser/
if iPhoneBrowser tells that your iPhone hasn't being jailbroken, install the ZiPhone iBrickr Fix via Installer.
btw, install first PDF Viewer under Installer. at the end of installation, it will pop the message of where the files should be placed. remember that directory and copy the PDF files via iPhoneBrowser.
