Very briefly, I can watch video, play games, etc on windows OS without a hitch. However, I can't use windows to grep, tail -f, wget, etc.
*

That's rather general to rule out one or the other. I mean, I can watch video and play games on Linux, too. Not all games, I admit, but the Linux desktop is a lot more usable than you give it credit for. All three systems in my house run one Linux desktop or another, even the one which my wife uses and she is far from tech savvy.

for surfing and normal user its very user friendly now. normal windows user can use it with no problem at all. but configuring windows games is kinda tedious under wine. well at least some of it if not all.

I myself is an ex-Ubuntu user, I have been using Ubuntu as my primary OS for few months but finally I decided to go back to Windows for some reason--it does not meet my requirement in many ways. I wonder why you all use Linux? your job needed? it looks cool? you are just interested to learn something new? or you are purely supporting freeware? And u use Linux to serve for what purpose? Networking? Desktop usage? smile.gif

You can try the Zend Studio for PHP, and on the free side, there's Netbeans (yes, I was skeptical at first, but it does look like Netbeans is a pretty decent IDE for PHP as well)

I absolutely love linux as a server, but as a desktop, I don't like.

I've played around with many variants, normally when something major comes out on Ubuntu or FC, I'll check it out. I still prefer XP, a bit faster response and nicer font (especially small ones). And yes, games sucks on Linux.

Also when it comes to Linux, configurations can be a headache. If it's a third party app, then god help you if you're not a Linux Wizard.

i'm running linux on a 8 year old dell with no problem whatsover.. haven't found a reason to buy a new laptop cause its still fast enough and way prettier graphics than windows(compiz tongue.gif)...

for usability wise, haven't encountered any big problems so far... biggest one is adobe apps.. especially flash studio... anyway other than that it totally rocks!!

for gaming, its xbox all the way! hahaha

Man, this is not true.

Most of the viruses target Windows. It does not mean there is no virus target Linux. If Linux can't infect by virus, why still some Antivirus vendor develop the Linux version for their product?

If a virus target Linux, it is dangerous also.

there are a few reasons for this.

lets compare farmer joe and doctor jane.

doctor jane knows how to avoid viruses by practicing proper hygiene, not directly touching anything which might be harmful, and have a light biohazard suit.
farmer joe just thinks that wearing a heavy rubber suit and bleach cologne will protect him.

u know who is farmer joe, rite? laugh.gif

linux for one uses a different filesystem.
second windows programs cannot run in linux.
linux doesn't have a package for its programs like windows has which are .dll .exe .pif etc. instead it is a collection of files and libraries, when a application is launched the kernel fetches these libraries and files to make the program you see unlike windows which has an .exe hogging all the resources it can.

linux is not for gamers.

though there are some games for it.
same like people don't buy macs to play games.
