My point is similar to chenmz. I am using Fedora 9 now and the reasons are:

1. Bcuz it is free.... legally.
2. Bcuz I don't plan to play game on it
3. I mainly use it as BitTorrent server running 24x7
4. It has large supporting community and the applications are frequently updated (without any genuine copy validation).
5. My laptop is just an entry level (Compaq C793TU to be exact) and can't afford Vista.
6. To enrich my computer knowledge.
7. It is always good to have an alternative of anything... including Windows.
8. It supports most hardware officially and unofficially (except my Canon 4400F scanner :().
9. No virus/trojan/etc (This is a very good point and I had nightmares dealing them in Windows)
10. It looks cool when sitting around Windows users biggrin.gif

I myself is an ex-Ubuntu user, I have been using Ubuntu as my primary OS for few months but finally I decided to go back to Windows for some reason--it does not meet my requirement in many ways. I wonder why you all use Linux? your job needed? it looks cool? you are just interested to learn something new? or you are purely supporting freeware? And u use Linux to serve for what purpose? Networking? Desktop usage? smile.gif

why i use Linux ? because i don't wanna let the evil monopolize earn so much money nod.gif

Sepanjang pengalaman saya, antara sebab mengapa pengguna enggan beralih kepada ubuntu (secara total atau dual-boot) ialah;

    * isu compatibility - banyak perisian dalam windows tidak mempunyai altenatif yang kompetitif dalam ubuntu
    * isu pengetahuan - di malaysia kekurangan rujukan dan tempat untuk bertanya jika timbul masalah dalam ubuntu
    * isu kemudahgunaan - untuk connect wireless dan beberapa task tertentu masih lagi memerlukan pengguna melalui proses textual interface yang menyusahkan dan menyulitkan
    * isu persekitaran - semua orang disekeliling menggunakan windows dan pengguna tidak mahu menjadi orang yang pelik
    * isu sosial - dia dengan awek dia ni selalu sangat berwebcam so kalau guna ubuntu takde ym dan susah nak berwebcam
    * isu game - "gua sejak lahir lagi memang xleh hidup klu xmain game beb. klu gua guna ubuntu susah arr nak main game. lu bleh arr cakap lu xmain game"
    * isu gampang - "weiii gua orang kaya la. apa barang guna sistem operasi percuma nih. buang karang jer"

Looks cool and nice to and simple. Make our brain work everyday.

I love Ubuntu and Windows both are perfect combination for me.
Ubuntu = Make my brain work (configure how to do this, how to do that)
Windows = Relaxing my mind. Easy to use. hehe smile.gif

Which player are you using to play it? Use MPlayer to play it, you will be prompted to install the required codecs when you use MPlayer.

Reason why I use Linux:
1) Its Open Source
2) Its Freedom
3) It helps me to save cost
4) I feel Windows is very restrictive
5) Developing and testing open source software is fun!

The first linux that i used was a knoppix livecd. I used the livecd to backup some files before formatting my computer and installing fresh windows XP. later i started playing with ubuntu on my laptop after seriously having to deal with blue screen almost every month and reinstalling XP on a monthly basis. Let's face it most of the windows operating system u can find in a Malaysian computer or laptop is a pirated version... Even if you are using an original copy of windows do you not have problems every now and then? missing DLL or Vsx or blue screen, driver conflict and best of all brontok virus (damn the indonesians for this ) vmad.gif vmad.gif

Somehow IMHO ur really not getting ur money's worth if ur using windows.... albeit original or pirated copy. Granted that using linux is an acquired taste; i mean i'm not gonna lie and say it's the perfect OS to date, but its a matter of taste. I can respect ppl using windows; again be it a legal or illegal copy. People just need to remember that there is an alternative. that's it.

Oh, the best part for me about using linux is when streamyx is down. I call the streamyx ppl and they will be like "Encik buntu? ape tu?" they dont have a standard operating procedure manual for linux! so they will send someone to my house (usually the same day if on weekdays) in that TM kancil to check my phone line, modem, router and streamyx line. usually it will be up and running within 15 minutes of their arrival..... biggrin.gif And usually the guy that solve my internet problem will call some one and say "reset connection dia" 2 minutes after that, and everything is fine.... When i was using windows.... It was hell... the guy on the phone will say do this and do that make sure it's like this and not like that.... check ur password... all the ridiculous things that is unrelated at all towards solving the problem....

I think that Windows have much better support for hardware hence games, OC etc. I think an original copy of Windows is very important and Vista IMHO has improved a lot on the graphics.
