QUOTE(subsonique @ Feb 26 2008, 10:15 AM)
yup same here hehe. it's wicked, and i am loving it. been free for the past 3 years and coming to the 4th year. life is not too bad, just that i do not have fixed income, but payment time is the best time la haha. worked for almost 6 years and decided to break out and make my own time. i run my own company with a bunch of talented freelancers but most of them have daily jobs la.

things you should do or consider prior to becoming a full time freelancer.

1. good networking
2. list of potential clients
3. possession of own equipment
4. list of potential contractors/freelancers
5. job scope
6. marketing strategy

this is my daily routine:
1. wake up as early as 8am
2. mountain biking
3. check email
4. lunch
5. work
6. mountain biking
7. dinner
8. discussion on potential business ventures (talking paintball, cars and all)
9. work
10.sleep as early as 2am

that is my routine, but if there's deadline, there's only work, work and work hehe. there's a lot of give and take, you get to miss dates, you get to miss cinemas, you get to miss many things that you don't ever wanna miss if you wanna do it seriously. but the best thing is, you get to make your own time. after a while, you will get use to it and schedule for client meetings according to your time smile.gif

and this is my job scope:

1. illustration
2. graphic design
3. publishing
4. t-shirt design
5. motion graphics (After Effects)
6. video editing (FCP, Edius and Premiere)
7. consultancy
*

Oww, you pimp the mountain bike ah? icon_idea.gif

Wake up at 8am is good, but sleep as early as 2am? laugh.gif sweat.gif

Dude, do you have a personal site? brows.gif

alamak guys, so many questions hmmm. to tell you the truth, i don't consider myself a successful person, yet hehe. successful to me depends on many things and how i tend to achieve them. ok i think i have listed down the area of my expertise in the first page, or the first reply that i gave haha.

tsubasa, function of a team? it's simple and straight bro. in a team, there will be a specialization for work/tasks, and each and everyone of your team members has their own area of expertise and weapons of choice. utilize them according to the job requirement. these personnel can be a full time freelancers or part time freelancers. it is the same as in the agency or design house.

zeist, no pimp of mountain bike la bro haha. have never tested downhill yet, but cross country is good enuff for me now la haha. and yup i cannot sleep more than 5 or 6 hours a day. pening kepala haha. anyway, i do not have a personal site, never managed to do 1, but i do have my team's site, it's a t-shirt business site, www.taba.com.my hehe. if anyone needs to see my team's portfolio, by all means hehe request and i'll burn DVDs for you, but FOR BUSINESS ONLY because there was once, someone used it and claimed as his to one of my clients.

hmm... im just curious...
mind if i ask something here ar? tongue.gif
just wondering, does all full time freelancer such as subsonique, momochi and others out there... do u guys declare ur exact amount or income always? or not entirely? and pay tax like others???

coz i know a lot people accept freelance job but nvr declare. just wondering if full timer freelancer declaring or not. >.<

and also if we would start a freelancing job... either part time or full time... is there anywhere or us to know those pricing in our related field?? as u know some people they dont really know how much pricing bout things they are doing.

example like me, in my company, our boss nvr will tell us bout the pricing bout those things we did. and of coz there is no way we can deal with the client... so if we would start a freelancing job... there are high chance we might get cheated and do like hell for very low price. so may someone enlight me is there anyway or anywhere to check and get to know the pricing? either 3D visualizing, animation, website, graphic design, etc etc art related pricing?

@.@
hope to get some replies >.<

thanks in advance!

you see, i founded a company to protect my interests, hence all payments are directed to the company's account, hence taxable.

okay here's the thing

part time freelancer = no tax
full time freelancer = tax

BUT

tax only applies when you form a company.. regardless of enterprise or sdn bhd. even if let say part time freelancer register his business, he need to pay tax.because when you open a company, you'll need to register a separate account ( legally ). so all your money goes there. and during annual internal audit, it will define how much your tax. this is as far as i know. i'm not from business management so correct me if im wrong. but usually, i think full time freelancer have to declare. fyi, overseas freelancers do need to pay tax.

as for pricing, one of the fastest way is to check any website that offer you the services. usually they put price range. furthermore, some of the freelancers have their own scope. some of them made custom-made website so they can't reveal their pricing because their pricing varies with different clients. and some, like supermarket, clearly stated that how much each of them will cost. the price is PNC matters because, it can become a tool that can be used against yourself.

cut it short
you go to supermarket = they sell ready made clothes. all of the same quality ( clear pricing )
you to to specialist = they sell custom made clothes. all suits and match with their client needs. ( pricing is varies )

in my early days, i also didnt know the pricing. one thing you can do is to do a background check of the client. how big is the company when they ask you for quotation. lucky enough, you may want to to ask how much budget they allocated. be aware that they'll always pull the price down. so put the price high a bit first. but place the price extremely high, and they run away. but the most important thing during quoting your price is...

to justify the reason behind your pricing. you have to convince them that you can deliver for what they pay. you ask for 20k, and they have to be convinced that you can do something that is worth 20k. prove that you're worth it.

so maybe you want to check your price with your competitors and then, adjust them to suit your needs. below are some of the articles that i hope can help you in pricing yourself.

http://freelanceswitch.com/money/nine-fact...ing-your-price/

hope this helps smile.gif

freelancing gives you creativity freedom which is something the msian design industry is lacking.

hmmm that is not really the case i reckon. freelancing or full time designer still need to answer to clients. there will be a restriction on creativity still. freedom of creativity can be found in fine arts hehe.

I have no idea we have freelancing teams in Malaysia... O_o Do these teams accept people who wants to join or are only a small group between friends?

Currently I'm also freelancing full-time, but I'm still unsure of what to do after my freelance ends.
