Anyone here who is studying over there now?

Hong Kong is one of the places I'm looking for to further my education. I've completed my STPM for year 2007 and currently waiting for the results

How is the environment there compared to Malaysia?
What about living expenses?
Is mandarin a must?
How good are their universities compared to those in UK, Australia and Singapore?

Those who have been there, studied there, or is still studying over there... please share your views and experience

thanks wink.gif

As I am from Hong Kong, Obviously, if you are aiming at University of Hong Kong, chinese University of Hong kong, and HKUST, these will be good choices to pursue your future studies.
For living expenses, Hong kong will be much higher than Malaysia, and Mandarin will not be used in Campus, as english is the main medium in the University. Try your best.

1) Faster pace, a more serious and definitely better learning environment compare to Malaysia
2) Very high to Malaysians (HKD60000 equivalent to around RM30000+/- ) per academic year ( if top up another rm10-20k we can get a reknown aus/Uk cert locally), hostel fee is charge daily (HKD 60-80 daily), food is definitely more expensive (prepare to spend around HKD100 daily on food if u eat outside)
3) english is used if u are in higher education academy
4) most of them are pretty good, HKU is top 20 just below NTU (or NUS, cant remember), City U is within top 100 (around 60 IIRC), both UST and Baptisy U is highly rated also

i have studied at City U for a semester (semester exchange), i would just it is a pretty good environment to study and if u r financially supported pls apply for it
but places are as limited as local U, because there are quite a number of students from mainland and their standard is very high

Hong Kong is a very nice place to live in , unless u cannot forget the huge bungalow and spacious study u have here.

as HKU is a top 20 U in the world, if not mistaken 14th by times... so u can expect the medium to be english instead of cantonese which is highly unlikely right.

for sure cost of living will be higher but it is a place we are more familiar with, less cultural shocks compared to UK US ..

Hi, sorry to bunk in on this thread but I'm interested in going to Hong Kong too. Wanna ask a few questions.

1. How does Hong Kong Uni's application procedure work? When are the applications usually open?
2. How are the fees like compared to Australian unis?
3. My main language is ENglish and I'm not proficient in Cantonese. Will I be able to get around?
4. What is their entry requirement like? I'm doing SAM this year. Will it be easier to enter with my SAM results or via credit transfer from a private local uni later?

I intend to do their Bachelor of Econs and Finance if I can get in. ^^;; But the application procedure (from their website) looks pretty complicating.

Not always the case.............English is only common in tourist areas. If you end up going to neighbourhoods in Kowloon ie Jordan, Mongkok and further up north, you can't just rely on English. So getting around would be a problem off the island. I have an angmoh girl friend who lives in Stanley, speaks no Cantonese, never left the island.

Hi, I'm thinking of studying bachelor of science in biology or biochemistry in HKUST. I heard that such courses offered by HKUST is far better than those offered by other uni in HK. Can anyone here tell me is it true? Pls.. really need your advice. thank you..

HKUST has a focus on science and technology. It gives the impression that it is better.

hey just realised there isnt a thread about education in Hong Kong and decided to start one. Anyone studying/studied/plan to study der? for easy reference, lets take HKU as our main subject. According to their entrance prerequisites, http://www.hku.hk/admission/nonjupas-uer.htm#malaysia, dey state dat STPM is required for entrance. Then wat abt Alvls? THx

P.S. anything regarding the topic is open for discussion
