AS 3112 (Australian 10 A/240 V)
This plug, used in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea, has an earthing pin, and two flat pins forming an upside down V-shape.[13] The flat blades measure 6.5 1.6 mm and are set at 30 to the vertical at a nominal pitch of 13.7 mm. Australasian wall sockets almost always have switches on them for extra safety, as in the UK. An unearthed version of this plug with two angled power pins but no earthing pin is used with small double-insulated appliances, but the power (wall) outlets always have three pins, including an earth pin.

Mobiles.
Commonly; mobile phone is widely use in Australia. It can be ranging from normal 2G mobile to 3G mobile platform or even CDMA.
Mobiles Phone Provider/ Service provider do provides mobile services such as from Telstra, Optus, Virgin Mobile, Three, Vodafone.
There is various services you can apply to for your telecommunication;for student it is advise to go with
Optus Prepaid; or Three Mobile postpaid based on provider plans.
for more information on mobile choice, visit http://www.phonechoice.com.au/

Internet Broadband
Australia Internet Broadband is a must for us this days especially dealing with assignments and notes from course. For basic broadband line; it require a landlines to able to connect to the internet. There is many ISP provider through Australia and it varies in each state.
for more information on plans to choose in Australia; visit

Wireless
How convinent. I just spent the weekend playing with 3's 3G broadband. $29/month gets you 2GB, which IMO isn't that bad.
Don't expect DSL speeds however. The ping time is amazing (about 350ms just to the base tower), so Skype'ing will cause some delay and echo's. Its not for heavy downloaders. General web surfing is okay through.
Here in Brisbane, 3's coverage isn't that great. My friend who's on a 3 cap plan can't get a signal in the lecture theater, while my Optus prepaid can get a reasonable signal. You better be near a window if you want to use the wireless broadband of 3's in Brisbane.
The other providers that I know off are Vodafone (5GB for $39), Virgin (heaven knows what they charge, but they use Optus' infrastructure), Telstra (the worst. $69 for 500MB?! In all fairness through, you can pretty much get a Telstra signal anywhere.) and Optus (not much better than Telstra price wise IMO). Never used the others, so I cant say too much.
Some links if you want to do some research:

Three
Optus
Virgin
Bigpond
Vodafone

What are the things that I can bring and not into Australia?

Head here http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis

Wanna find the cheapest/bargain stuff online in Australia?

Head here http://www.staticice.com.au/

What is the difference between vline and metlink tickets for the tram?

Vline is tram services to go to rural area which mean outside melbourne like ballarat, gippsland geelong
Metlink is for melbourne city and suburban
Yarra tram, smartbus, and connex train all are intergrated into 1 system of ticketing
You can see more in www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au

Work while studying. How can I do that?

Trying to get a PR?

Read this new points system http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=Atta...=post&id=261003

I need to extend 1 semester due to failure and need to extend my visa. What I need to do?

Extension would means you'll need a new new visa and another ~AUSD500 for it. You will need to do another health check as well.

does this mean the previous thread cannot be added into?

there is a wealth of information there, it would be a shame if it disappears from the front page........can it be pinned?

agreed upon, but i believe a link to the first thread would be more relevant. A hundred over pages there, with almost half of it pure conversational. We just bulk it up, and edit on the first posts of this with the informations that we can dig out from the first thread and compile it as time past. Too many redundant questions

How long do topics stay until they are purged, if... at all?

I guess a very long time considering 2 years-old topic were revived before.

KVReninem , i will help you on compiling some of the guide this coming weekend. And like some have mentioned, it's kinda difficult to find some useful information when casual chatting is in between them. It would be better if some FAQ on Studying in Australia which will benefit the rest rather than scroll through 125 pages.

Hi,
As posted on that thread, I think it would better if we split up the thread (v1) into few portion and gathers relevant data from it.

For example:-

Page 1-25(me)
Page 26-50 (you) and so on..

I could help you about 75pages (and could start by tonight).

anyone wanna join the boat ?

Yeah, you'll need it unless you take SAM.If not,you have to take the test.

I find IDP is quite useless. They didnt help me to find accommodation at all.

I think city would be better like:

Cheesenium,UNSW,Sydney

It's because most people dont know states in aus very well.Group them up according to cities.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't profess to be an expert in this area, but I'm willing to volunteer in providing information/guides on the following:
Sydney, NSW
Renting in Sydney
Living in Sydney (all the essentials like getting around, shopping for essentials, banking, telecommunication, internet connection, etc.)
Working in Sydney

University of New South Wales (UNSW)
Engineering @ UNSW
Australian School of Business @ UNSW
Medicine @ UNSW
UNSW Foundation Year

We'll need some other volunteers from Sydney University, Macquarie, UTS and some regional institutions like UWS and Wollongong.

Off the top of my head, I think the following active LYNs here could contribute towards this (if I miss out anyone, just let me know):
blaxez, pangping1510, jae, nyprinz83

IDP was pretty helpful in the beginning. But after helping me to apply for UniSA and receiving my CoE, they totally ignored my emails after that. =/
