Been wanting to do this for the longest time but didn't haf time. Here it is finally. This is a Logitech MX510 which I bought 4 years ago. It's still a fantastic mouse n I love it. I used it for my laptop last time. I need a mouse for my 2nd rig now so I decided to refurbish this good ol MX510. For some reason Logitech loves coating the products in a black rubbery layer, I hate it coz it always peels off n attracts dust like a magnet. That by itself is already annoying enuf but because the MX510 is so old, the rubbery layer has begun to sorta melt. It has become sticky n gooey. Dust sticks to it n cant be wiped off. It also leaves a sticky gooey residue on ur hand after using it. vmad.gif

So..................... I decided to give the mouse a nice bath n sum new clothes for the new year. laugh.gif Here's a few pics of just how horrible the mouse has become after 4 years.

Wokeh here come the pics. To get to the screws so u can open the mouse up, u need to peel off the stickers underneath.

Slaughtering the mouse.

All the parts dismantled. Time to remove that horrible sticky gooey stuff from the parts.

After removing the paint, got down to sanding it to a fine finish. I kinda like this look. I almost put the mse back just like that coz it kinda looked nice to me with a rugged look.

Painting timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I oni took pics after all is done coz it's very messy with the fine mist flying everywhere. Dont wanna damage my camera with all that dust. Here's how it looks now. Leaving it on the hanger to dry. Will reassemble everything after teh paint is dry. Most likely 2nite.

Uncle u sure it would be fully dried by tonight ..

usually paint takes several days to fully harden to prevent sticking finger print on ..

Besides that, don't u need to apply a layer of protection coat to protect the paint....

Unless u got some quick solution within your sleeve like most of your mod does .. brows.gif

I like the color like that. Took me a while to find that exact tone of grey. There's a lot of dark metallic grey around but I wanted a grey that looks a bit brownish like titanium kinda tone.

I really dont understand y Logitech persist with that rubber coating stuff. My new G9 mouse is already peeling. It's unbelievable. The products are really good n well built to last for years but they keep using that rubber coating. doh.gif

That's what we call as marketing strategy. laugh.gif
Think about it, [For mainstream & n00bs] you bought an MX518, you used it for four years, you love it.
But after years of using it, the rubbers starting to tick you off, not wanting to lose the love on the previous MX518, they bought a new one.
There it goes again and again. [If he doesn't fall in love with other mouse lar laugh.gif ]

Plus, you know that Logitech engineers already know that the rubber will peel of some day later after a long use, that's why they still stick to the rubber, because they know that one day, the buyer will just buy a new one. Coz not many would do the same as you ian, which refurb the old mouse with a really good idea and design. wink.gif

Thumbs up for a really nice coat of paint man. thumbup.gif

Good job there and nice color for the painting. Some sort like Gun Metal feeling and makes the mouse even better looking than a brand new one.. thumbup.gif

Seriously, you are like a Logitech saver. LOL...

Nice mod, what kinda paint did you use and did you clearcoat it?

Looks interesting, but the rubber on my MX1000 still seems alright after 2 years of use, so I won't be attempting this anytime soon. smile.gif

Yes the paint is fully dried. It's impossible to assemble the mse if paint is not dry. A lot of handling required on the painted parts for reassembly.

It's got nothing to do with them wanting us to buy newer products. U'll be shocked to know my new G9 has started peeling too. vmad.gif I'm now using the optional cover that came with the G9. I will hafta mod the G9 cover as well.
