Stocks Rally Late To Close Higher As Volume Swells

A late kick lifted indexes out of a muddy session and into gains on Monday.

The S&P 500 climbed 0.4% while the NYSE composite, the Nasdaq and the Dow added 0.3% each. All closed near session highs.

The Nasdaq had slumped as much as 0.8% just before noon. But late in the session, indexes started rallying on news that Dubai World would restructure some units to ease debt woes.

The conglomerate's possible debt default rattled world markets last week.

Volume doubled from totals Friday, when U.S. exchanges closed early.

While higher volume was expected, trading on the NYSE was above average for the first time in nearly a month and the heaviest since Nov. 4.

Monday marked a rare occurrence when indexes climb in higher volume. That's a positive for a market that has stalled and has come under higher-volume selling. In short, it remains a time to be guarded about your stocks and quite selective about any stocks you buy.

Stocks started the day on an upbeat note. The Chicago Purchasing managers index came in well above expectations.

Big banks and a few insurers rebounded after taking a licking Friday.

But many retailers slumped as the market watched the holiday shopping season's kickoff.

For much of the day, stocks seemed to track the dollar. The greenback was choppy as currency markets grappled with the Dubai debt fallout.

By midafternoon, the Nasdaq looked headed for a fifth distribution day.

But the final-hour rally arrived, and leading stocks gained the most from it.

China-based leaders took the initiative. The country's auto industry led, after an announcement Sunday that regulators there would continue tax cuts aimed at boosting auto sales.

Diesel engine maker China Yuchai International (CYD) surged 12% in five times its average trade.

China Automotive Systems (CAAS), a producer of power steering and other components, catapulted 14% in seven times its normal trade. The stock cleared a three-weeks-tight pattern.

Outside of China, online printer Vistaprint (VPRT) gapped up to add 7%. The company terminated a contract with a marketing firm that had received consumer complaints, reports said.

Indexes Rally In Mixed Trade; Chinese Stocks Surge

Stocks started December off with a bang Tuesday, thanks to easing Dubai fears and a weaker dollar. Encouraging economic reports also helped.

The NYSE composite rallied 1.7%. The Nasdaq, boosted by semiconductor stocks, climbed 1.5%. The Philadelphia semiconductor index surged 3.2%, closing back above its 50-day moving average. The Dow and the S&P 500 climbed 1.2% each as the industrials reached a new closing high for the year.

Volume rose on the Nasdaq. It was the second straight advance in higher trading for the composite. Such bullish action has been uncommon since the market made a follow-through on Nov. 9.

But volume fell on the NYSE, dampening the other major indexes' gains.

Despite two strong days this week, the market continues to show some hesitation.

The major indexes are meeting some resistance around their November peaks.

Leadership has been narrow, with more-volatile Chinese stocks generally making the best gains.

A number of China stocks surged Tuesday after HSBC's China Purchasing Managers' Index climbed to a record high of 55.7 in November.

China Agritech (CAGC) gapped up and bolted 19% in nearly six times average volume. The fertilizer producer cleared a 20.89 buy point from a cup with handle.

Harbin Electric (HRBN) gapped up and rallied 9% to its best levels since February 2008.

China Automotive Systems (CAAS) tacked on 6% in more than five-times average trade, but receded from a 14% intraday rise. The maker of steering components cleared a 17.72 buy point from a three-weeks-tight pattern on Monday.

Wonder Auto Technology (WATG) gapped up and ran 10%. The stock regained its 50-day moving average and is shaping a new base.

Tri-Tech Holding (TRIT) also finished well off session highs. A 9% gain dwindle to just 1%. The stock cleared a 20.43 buy point from a cup base on Friday.

Tuesday's economic data was mostly positive. Pending home sales grew a surprising 3.7% in October, the ninth straight monthly gain. Construction spending came in flat vs. an expected 0.4% decline.

The ISM manufacturing index fell to a weaker-than-expected 53.6. But it was the fourth straight monthly reading above 50, signaling expansion.

Meanwhile, fears over debt woes in Dubai continued to fade.

Gold hit another record. It gained $18.00 to $1,199.10 an ounce. The gold and silver ores industry group was one of the day's best.
