the storage space would be a main concern... since it is only 2GB, after installation of the OS, the space left might not be able to cater the other programs and the data that is needed to be stored.
*

It will certainly use a custom made linux OS that barely use that 2GB of space. Heck, unless the makcik or pakcik download porns, 2GB is more than enough for work. They can always buy pendrive to store those MP3s of Dikir Barat or Alleycats

we're at an age that people forgot that people once used hard disks that are less than 2GB and used it fine for work and for Internet.

not every one has 1GB worth of MP3.

most people who browse, email and use office productivity applications that deal with mainly documents and spreadsheets don't know how to utilize 512MB.

the only time they get more than 512MB filled up is

1. their friends keep sending them attachment of pictures and badly done MS PowerPoint files
2. they make their own BADLY DONE powerpoint files.
3. finally learn how to save pictures. smile.gif

Fixed for the truth. Really, if not for the MP3s and movies, I'd say my real disk usage for work rarely goes beyond 1.5GB

Agreed. The main reason people now need bigger hdds is because of mp3s and movies.

You said it right.

Frankly speaking, IF this so-called makcik pc were to be done at almost perfectly condition, it would be a good choice for students to do their work and help them with their studies.

unfortunately being Malaysia, we expect every think that comes with monitor and keyboard attached to be an entertainment center.

this mindset is commonly found even in adults. for example, some freshgrad joined a company and got a laptop for work, it won't take long before it gets filled with MP3, movies and a bunch of other stuff not related to work. smile.gif

and it's not surprising if the fella complains the laptop lacks DVD player and JBL speaker. biggrin.gif

not to say they're not allowed to use it for entertainment la but then I do come by people who will use it super kau kau with the mindset "nevermind la. use only. office wan, if spoil also office send for repair."

based on the above, I'm not surprised if the plan didn't turn out well. like the EPF funds to buy PC campaign, it was a great idea actually but people took it for granted.

as usual with our mindset. oh murah, guna EPF beli. pas tu jual kepada kawan, mark up sikit dapat lebih untung.

i think the plan is great. i just hope to see that the plan is
1. not screwed up by our 3rd-world mentality
2. not screwed up by policies like bumiputra ONLY or bumiputra get discount or whatever.

if it's something the benefits the nation, let it be something that benefits the nation equally. smile.gif

While I myself am a bumi, I agree with you. We don't need berat sebelah policies. I'd think if they introduce this to students at school (primary and secondary) and let them learn how to use it. And then show it to the parents that this is no entertainment hardware, this could hit the right spot.

MIMOS is also working on a low-cost tablet PC called the CyberTablet that would cater to primary and secondary school students. The CyberTablet would mainly be used in education, especially the smart schools, to 'enhance' teaching and learning experience. Well from experience, anything that enters school usually ends up not being fun so I doubt the students will be enjoying a game of WOW or F.E.A.R with the CyberTablet should it come out and be implemented.

Its great to see that something is being developed here in order to reduce the digital divide though we'll just have to wait and see WHEN it will actually come out. And just in case you're wondering how much these devices will cost, well the MAK-CIK PC has an expected target retail price of less than US$160 while the CyberTablet should cost between US$160 to US$300.

Read on for pictures of the MAK-CIK PC and expected functionalities of both it and the CyberTablet.

The MAK-CIK PC is being designed to be lightweight and mobile and to work with any TV. The device is also expected to be equipped with Wi-Fi (and soon WiMAX) capabilities to enable remote connectivity. It will also have built in flash memory instead of a large hard disk capacity to achieve the desired form factor and lightness.

The content/applications currently built into the MAK-CIK PC device is divided into 4 categories - Communication, Information, Community and Learning. Studies are also being conducted to gauge the response of the MAK-CIK PC by the group most affected by the digital divide - the rural elders.

MIMOS CyberTablet

The product version of MIMOS CyberTablet will be equipped with:

-          Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WiMAX connectivity

-          Flash memory

-          Softphone (VoIP Phone)

-          Virtualization software to allow software applications to be downloaded on the fly from MIMOS Grid Computing

-          Personalization software developed by MIMOS

-          The latest social networking tools

woohoo, wifi is there rclxms.gif

I think its pretty misleading. They call it a PC but it looks a lot like a tablet PC...which it is i guess...They are using older technology to keep the price cheap...2GB for something of that size? IPOD touch is smaller and has tons more space than that...Okay so the IPOD touch is bloody expensive and this is cheap..I understand its market segment is not catered towards tech enthusiasts...

Its a novel concept but its not going to net much revenue for any company as a first product(especially is they use a traditional revenue generating concept - charge a flat price up front)...They need good follow up to this product and someone has said before me that that is the problem with all Malaysian companies...And i have another point, why do Malaysian companies always try to compete in the price category. We can never be profitable simply because competitors, if they want to enter into a this price category, it will be extremely easy for them simply because of economies of scale...mass production...lowering costs which our dear Malaysian company will never be able to compete in...End of the day these more experienced and bigger foreign companies can easily undercut their pricing and READ KEYWORD offer more BENEFIT and can produce new products faster with new features faster.

Come on guys...Malaysia has to move away from making 'cheap' products and more quality, benefit inducing and innovative products. This has potential....only the company making it can ruin it.

Have you tried this yet before saying it has no quality? The fact that I and goldfries has mentioned before that A PC IS NOT AN ENTERTAINMENT HARDWARE BUT A HARDWARE TO DO WORK ON does not strike you as the reason that it ONLY NEEDS 2GB because you won't use more than that for work?
The fact that this and the ASUS EEE PC are created for the benefit of the low income ppl, and they are doing a good job of it. It's not about mass production or finding money, it's about giving them an afforadble PC

Thats why I said it has potential and only the company marketing it can ruin it. I never said it didnt have quality...All i said was they were trying to minimise cost by using older technology...which is not a bad thing...if they CAN be competitive...They SHOULD NOT compromise on quality was my point.

On your bolded statement so you mean that if its not profitable they will get subsidised by government? doh.gif While it is a very nice sentiment its not practical or realistic...unless this product is part of the companies CSR and THE COMPANY itself subsidises it then thats okay.

Its not about 2GB is enough for work or not. Imagine if a competitor manages to launch a product with 10GB/5GB around the same pricepoint...Do you think this company should say that 2GB is more than enough for work and the competitors model is unecessary? Technology always moves forward regardless wether they are fully utilised or not...Companies that don't move ahead will not be succesful...Actually partly it is also a marketing thing...

As I said I'll repeat it again...this has potential but the company will have to work fast and have good support for their product and possibly find a more innovative way of charging the customer to maximise revenue and give more benefit to the consumer and yes the low income group.

i think the real issue at hand is not the lack of equipment but rather the "housewives & poor schools" lack of technical knowledge on handling a personal computer.

lets face it, people. do you guarantee that u can make a "makcik" next door to become interested in using a pc for surfing the internet? i doubt it,seriously. if everyone is not afraid of changes to their lives, everyone would be entrepreneurs by now.

sorry if i'm a bit negative but during my previous secondary school years, i haven't got a chance to use the newly-built pc lab. the lab is complete but no activites were held to actually allow students to go in and use! cheh! i used my jogathon donations just for that!? lol...

feel free to comment, these just my 2cents.. hehe

*i have read an article somewhere of similar low-cost pc for African citizens mainly schoolchildren, but its the same "its too pricey and lots of bugs" problem yet to be tackled

- It's not for younger generation. IT'S FOR THE UNDEPRIVILAGED.
- This is targeted for the kampung/pedalaman where electricity are scarce. This will not consume a lot of electricity.
- Go read more about cheap PC. there is even one version in africa that runs on wind up key because there is no electricity AT ALL.
- Wifi are not for the internet, it's for networking among PC so that they won't need to use RJ-45
- 2GB are more than enough for Linux + Office + random stuff. YOU ARE NOT USING THIS FOR DOWNLOADING PORN
- Not everyone can afford the same hardware as you. And what do YOU do with it? Work?
- what you know about IT is appalling. If IT is all about speed, Intel would not have ditched their speed technology for multicore.
