The Orlando Magic finally got to test the new inside-out combination of Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis.

After a rough first quarter, coach Stan Van Gundy liked what he saw.

Lewis scored 16 points in his first preseason game in three weeks, lifting the Magic over the San Antonio Spurs 99-90 Thursday night.

"We try and spread the floor out and make teams pay when they double-team," Lewis said. "Dwight will keep the paint closed, we can knock down the open shots and that leaves him one-on-one down low, and I don't think anybody can guard him one-on-one."

It was the last chance for Lewis and the rest of the Magic to find rhythm before starting the regular season Wednesday against Milwaukee. The All-Star forward played 31 minutes, slightly more than the 30 minutes in his only two preseason games before getting hurt.

"My legs got a little heavy," Lewis said. "I got tired, but I needed to get tired out there so I can get ready for next week."

Both teams played their best rotations, though Lewis and Dwight Howard sat out the fourth quarter. So did Tim Duncan, but Spurs coach Gregg Popovich kept playing Tony Parker, Michael Finley, Manu Ginobili and Brent Barry well into the final period.

Ginobili scored 21, while Parker had 18 points and eight assists and Duncan finished with 10 points and seven rebounds on 4-for-14 shooting.

"Whenever you add talent to a team that already made the playoffs last year it obviously improved them," Duncan said. "Rashard has some experience and of course he brought that All-Star level talent to the team."

Carlos Arroyo scored 16, Hedo Turkoglu had 13 points and Dwight Howard added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Keith Bogans scored 11 on 4-for-5 shooting.

The Magic won their last six preseason games to finish 6-1, an impressive but meaningless pace because so many teams rested key players.

"San Antonio's at a whole different place than we are," Van Gundy said. "Those guys are just playing their way into getting ready for the season. There's no great sense of urgency on their part right now. They've been there, they know what it's all about, and when it's time they'll be ready."

The Spurs have one more preseason game Friday against Houston before opening the regular season Tuesday hosting Portland.

Francisco Elson had five points in a seven-point San Antonio run for a 31-22 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. Orlando quickly whittled it to two points, then took a 48-47 halftime lead after scoring six in the final minute of the first half. Arroyo had four points on consecutive possessions with a 15-foot jumper and an acrobatic layup in traffic.

The Magic opened the third quarter with a 12-4 run, but fell behind 62-61 after more than 3 1/2 scoreless minutes. Lewis broke the drought with a jumper and 3-pointer within 27 seconds that started a 13-6 run.

Arroyo scored eight fourth-quarter points, and Orlando led by 13 in the final period.
