I just got a new rig recently and i found out my CPU is throttling like 2600mhz -> 1000mhz -> 2600mhz -> 1000mhz -> 2600mhz every second while playing games. (a.k.a it's throttling)

So I download prime95 and do a full load testing (running 2 instance) I found that my CPU temp hit 65c in 30 seconds (then the throttling starts) and BSoD in less then 5 min (Temp around 75~80 C).

I also open up the case and touch the heatsink, below is some comparison with my other rig:

AMD Athlon XP 1900+ running at 59 C = The heat sink is hot, can cook!
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 65nm 2600Mhz under stress test at 65 C = The heatsink is just warm

At first i thought is the stock compound is not good enough so i re-apply with some Arctic Silver but that is not helping much. (well, can lasts longer before BSoD. at least can nearly "touch" the 5 min milestone)

Wanna ask, is this 'normal' for you guys running AMD Athlon 64 X2? or i need to get a better cooler like THE Big Typhoon. biggrin.gif

Note: all the drivers and dual core patch is installed.

My Machine Spec:
MSI K9N Neo-F V3 (MS-7369) <-- yaay~ RMAed and changed to ASUS M2N-E and now running smooth~ (finally i can play games.)
AMD X2 5000+ 65nm 2600Mhz (Stock HS+F running at 3k RPM) <--- changed HS+F to BIG Typ 120VX after i confirmed my tempeture problem fixed. now running coooollll
2 GB DDR2-800 RAM (with heat sink plates)
Silver Stone 560W PSU (1x 120mm fans)
CoolerMaster Case (2x 120mm fans)
320GB SATA HDD
MSI ATI Readon HD 2600XT Diamond 512MB DDR4
(FYI guys, ATI HD 2xxx sucks, lots of compatibilities issue like texture alpha not working plus HDR issue(e.g. see http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=534734 ). and i doubt they gonna fix that, already tested a few version of driver. get the green ones instead for DX10 card atm.) vmad.gif

Double checked that the compound and the HS sits at the right place. (with reference to the AMD installation manual)

Tested with case open and closed. tongue.gif

It is possible that the heatsink appears seated but actually not pressed against the CPU. What type of anchoring does the heatsink use? Pushpins? Screws?

I just got a new rig recently and i found out my CPU is throttling like 2600mhz -> 1000mhz -> 2600mhz -> 1000mhz -> 2600mhz every second while playing games.

I think u have enable the C & Q either on yr mobo or os. Check if yr mobo have enable the C & Q option. Then windows , control panel->power option-> izzit the selection on Minimal Power Management .

Then about yr high temp first check yr HSF izzit really hot .It been an old case for amd brisbane having a DTS(Digital Temperature Sensor) to be broken. Ppl from many forum complaint about the temp issue
Alcpu forums ,Rage3D forum , AMD forum and many more report the high temp.

i tested with CnQ enabled and disabled. with case opened and closed

the case is not warm at all. and the chipset heatsink of course is hot to touch. (displays says 40~45 C)

the cpu will still throttling when the temp reach 65 C. Maybe the new MoBo automatic throttle the cpu when it reads 65 C or <

the worst thing is the PC gone BSOD on 100% load for like 5 min. e.g. video encoding and prime 95.

err... dude. power option dosen't matter i am not talking about CNQ
"Always on" (or can directly off using bios) for no CnQ and "Minimal power management" for CnQ. (i believe our IQ here is not single digit.)

the problem is AMD Athlon X2 5000+ 65nm with MSI-7369 = overheat with BSoD (CnQ or not)

I manage to reproduce the BSoD 2 times (don't want to do more again temp went up to 105 C)

both different message: (BSoD is just a second blink so i get the windows report message insted)
Hardware Failure
Problem caused by Device Driver

and... i found out that my CPU might be not supported...

@kmarc
pushpins, and i am sure the cpu and HS is clip in place. (else will BSoD when start windows, i have previous expirence on this tongue.gif.)

well, i was suspecting that the mobo does not support the CPU. well, RMA tongue.gif

while the mobo detecting the temp 105C and speed fan only shows 46C

the crash happened just after i stop the prime 95 (or other running process)

Added on October 11, 2007, 12:09 amgot my problem fixed by changing the mobo.

thumbs up to MyPC at lowyat for the great service and effort wink.gif
