The Story In Summary:

1. Earl, not happy with TMNet, wrote a letter to The Malay Mail
2. The Malay Mail published the letter.
3. He got a couple of phone calls.
4. Next thing he knows, the CEO of TMNet is in his house, sitting on his bed
5. Earl shows the CEO his connection speed of 10-12Kb/s
6. CEO plugs in his own laptop and gets 160-170Kb/s
7. When Earl asked...how can the speed be so different?
8. They said its maybe because of "spyware", or his "processor".
9. Earl is still not happy.
10. Earl tests his connection again later in the day.
11. His speed is now 130-155 Kb/s. Wow.
12. My speed still sucks.
13. So, when can I expect a visit?

You can read the full thing at RedesignMalaysia: His Name Is Earl And He Got TMNet's CEO to Visit His House!

*Yawn*
Another marketing strategy by TMnut. It's good publicity. I can see it now, people talking about how "efficient" TMnut is. But sadly, falls too short of expectation.

*/Yawn*

And oh, the laptop they use must be specially rig so that it can bypass the cap. Come on seriously, it has to be. He's the freaking tauke and must've have some special software to bypass the capping or whatever.

Load of bull poop! Allocating bandwidth for a while, maybe for a month or year just to satisfy 1 customer. Interesting thing, it is was that easy, I think we won't be even discussing this right?

How did tmNut do that. I thought the cap speed is due to dynamic IP instead of account no.

Your processor speed & quality has no bearing on your download speed.

Why he never ask, you see my prawn. Why is the prawn downloading so slow on bittorrent? laugh.gif I thought the CEO is a lady? blink.gif

The damn CEO did something to his line before they go to his house. They are using proxy or VPN to get that speed. It is impossible to reached 170kbps through 1mb package.

Yes, it is seriously rigged. There was an article posted here before about how ISPs usually mark certain ips to be given max bandwidth & high priority because it belongs to broadband speed test sites. rclxms.gif They have fooled the user and the press. The speed maybe for real too but only for him or his DSLAM.

Is there a connection between this PR stunt and the 'secret upgrade'? They could have taken offine parts of the network just to make sure there is no bottlenecks to get this speed of 170kBps. It would explain why so many faced network problems this week.

doh.gif He downloaded Acrobat Reader from adobe.com! Duh. An intercepting proxy server will cache this popular file and make sure the transfer is fast. He should have downloaded something unpopular yet from a fast site.

ok this is their procedure EARL :

1. You came back and saw ur DSL light is blinking or no light right?
2. Called up technician and he says his on the way (actually his at the DSLAM resetting your port, contacting server department to reset whatsoever equipment they have there)
3. CEO came with his ma chai
4.You test your speed and get 10 - 15Kb/s
5. He test his and got 170Kb/s speed right?

I want to verify a few things here
1. Did he used your account to connect or he use his VIP account?
2. The speed you mention 170Kb/s is he download from adobe reader or that's the speed of speedtest?
3. What is his IP at that time and your IP?
4. After you test your speed, did he disconnect your line -> off your modem -> unplug LAN cable -> plug LAN cable into his laptop -> connect again
or
unplug LAN cable and plug into his laptop without disconnect your line
5. You should ask him do more test by downloading from download.com or microsoft

yes i came back from work expecting someone to come over, i thought one technician is gonna come over, thought wanted to do some test before he comes over - see see no adsl signal ...

then 20 minutes later he called, said he coming over ...

no he did not reset nor did he restart my modem nor did he use his own account, it was all my account on my modem on my line

my ip at that time on the modem is one frommthr 60.*.*.* ip pool

the 160 - 170 kB/s is from a fill in adobe.com - the acrobat reader

i was surprised and was in shock - so i didnt have the time to think ... and should have checked his laptop ...

but after he left, i of course went out to brag about how the ceo came my house and all la, and still could nt fix my prob and gave me stupid reasons, then when i gt home, i tried to check my speed again, it has got a tremendous increase, and this was the speed i got around 11PM last nite ...

ok this thing made a huge turnabout ... tell me if this is weird ... or not

QUOTE
http://www.kukujiao.com/2007/08/19/streamyx-again-iv/

Damn, i am shit pissed off now ... as of 11:25AM just now i swear that i was still on a blardy fast connections, i did another test at 11:25AM and i could still hit 1400++kbps on my line with an IP form the 218.*.*.* pool. Then i went out for breakfast. Came back and did some more broswing and test, it was kinda fast, and i am able to get videos from dailymotion.com too, and it was very fast, Then bout 10 minutes later - i got a call from a guy by the name of Yus on my land line and he asked if my internet was better, i answered him yes - in fact way better than yesterday.

Then i went back watching my videos when suddenly it went all slow, i check my IP and its was fromthe 60.*.*.* pool, how can that happened? I never reboot my modem, but somehow my IP changed and the speed dropped back to what i had before the CEO came over. I tried rebooting the modem and try to acquire an IP from the 218.*.*.* pool, but it wasnt sucessful, for the past 30 minutes i have tried, and i am still getting IPs from the 60.*.*.* pool and my speed is now f***ing slow again.

A test to the very same New York server which i managed to get earlier today at 1435kb/s or 175.17 kB/s but i am not getting 40kb/s or 4.88 kB/s on this 60.49.103.* IP address now...
