I was taking some flower pictures at night but the light from flash could not lightup the flower properly, hence I built this ring flash adaptor of mine.

the picture that made me DIY this ring flash adaptor:

So i spent some hours DIY this ring adaptor.

Basically, it diverts the light from normal flash to lightup area around the lens.

material used:
3 x liquid medicine bottle
1 x cover of plastic container
some tape
black & white paint

1. I did not take the step by step photos. completed prototype 2. first prototype was simply paper & container cover.

2. the adaptor fits nicely onto the flash unit with a soft snap mechanism

3.setup on the camera

4.test result from the setup (not as good as first prototype)

Wont you lose a lot of light from the diffraction in the medicine bottles?

Your photo still doesn't look very sharp.

agreed...
try lining the inside with crumpled aluminium foil...to reduce the harshness of the flash produced...

to reduce the harshness, better to use a diffuser. cheaper and easier and more practical that way, imo.

but plastic container just doesn't cut it. its like the light from flash is 100% then the brightness and everything got raped to something lower tongue.gif

get a metal container, then polish it. at least its better that way.

the use of crumpled aluminium foil would result in a scattered light AFAIK, not diffused light.

as promised (to myself biggrin.gif ), i hv added alu foil into the ring adaptor, and below is the result.

feedback & cnc are very much welcomed.

1. before modification
user posted image

2. after add alu foil, all the way to the ring
user posted image

3. flower test shoot, too bright, causing reflection of the lens on the uv filter
user posted image

4. so add white A4 paper to reduce flash power
user posted image

5. and the final flower test shoot; note reflection still present, more modification on the way

Why don't you just dial-down the flash output (by maybe -1 EV) instead of sticking white paper?
