Hye guys,

I was making a research for the software to monitor your system performance/health.
I found some great apps such as:
bigsister:
http://bigsister.graeff.com/
argus:
http://argus.tcp4me.com
cricket:
http://cricket.sourceforge.net/
nagios:
http://www.nagios.org/
jffnms
http://www.jffnms.org/

But most of this software is a web based.
Anyone can share some good standalone and console based tools with the same purpose?..

Thank you. icon_rolleyes.gif

What are you monitoring, and what's wrong with web-based solutions?

I currently use Nagios and Ganglia (again, web-based) to monitor a CDN cluster, and they work well for that purpose. Nagios serves alerts, while Ganglia shows trends.

i'm curious too. what's wrong with web monitoring?

most people use linux for remote access and remote monitoring, i don't see any use if nagios is not web based.

cpu load,memory load,I/O(network/storage),process..
obviously nothing wrong with web based..
but this thing is more suitable for a long term purpose..
it does take quite sometime to properly install and configure.

im looking for some quick solution let say for troubleshooting purpose.
something similar to window's perfmon.
freebsd was the system im currently working on to be exact.

I dont think that he's saying that there's something wrong with web monitoring, but rather asking if there's anything out there that can provide him with the data as well directly from the console. Its kinda useful when u're in front of the racks itself, facing purely console screens and wanting to pull out some trends information, without having to pull your notebook out of your bag, and trying to figure out where to plug it into.

Anyways, 2 more to add:

http://www.hyperic.com/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/munin/

Munin is pretty minimalistic, but is pretty good still if u're just after trends

hmm...mostly webbased. I would prefer one that works through SSH.

I am currently using default tools like "top" and "iptraf".

Any other better tools?

on freebsd, for cpu you can use commands like uptime, systat or top, for memory/swap you can use pstat, vmstat and top, for network you can use netstat or iperf and for disk i/o, use iostat.

If talking about linux command from ssh. You can try this few command to check your server status.
cat /proc/cpuinfo - can check the cpu information
df -h -- check free space in your hard disk
free -- check the free memory

Also can try install hddtemp. It can check your hard disk temperature. Easy to configure and use. Can check the temperature in shell or add it on cacti template. But it only work on hard disk that have smart enable. biggrin.gif

Other way will be play around with snmp laugh.gif Can retrieve a lot information about your server. Of course need to add other management tool for enable more snmp information.
