can't you remove it from the bottom? it is just a screw lock that tightens the camera to the mount. You are suppose to unscrew it, mount the camera/lens, then tighten the screw IF you want...

that thing is actually spring loaded...
it is supposed to make the plate static after u attached it to the camera...
ive been using it with my d40...no problems at all...
press it down on the camera first before u start to turn the screw...this makes it impossible to scratch the camera....
or u could put some tissue or rubber or anything to protect the metal bit from damaging ur camera body...

Video cameras (camcorders) will utilize that little metal thingy but not photo cameras. Anyway, its spring loaded so just press the plate against the camera body and turn the screw to tighten it onto the camera will do.

I had thought of that since my tripod has a "video" printed on it. Now finally someone has confirmed.

Oh, so the spring thing is for video cameras...

Anyway, when mounting on the tripod I thought it would be obvious to turn the screw using the mickey mouse ears instead of the whole camera?

chucky what u said is obvious if the plate is removed from its holder...
but if it is stiill locked in place...turning the camera would be easier than turning the tripod...
but what i could not understand is...why not remove the plate to attach it then place it back?
weird!

It's not even a trouble to start with. The lil' spring activated thingy is for many other purposes i.e mounting video cams, external flashes, lense and various accessories. It's to prevent the items locked onto the tripod to 'slip' off after you tightened it onto the tripod. It's a 'second insurance' for tightening from the first locking.

I rather have the bottom of my cam scratched than slip off due to negligence.
