How to answer here? Well the reason why it took long time to shutdown is because vista need to configure the update setting or any new device added. Thus it will take very long. Moreever u said it took long time to shut down after long time u nv shutdown. Thus this shows that there is many update configuration vista need to be set.
If ntg is updated or no program is added, it will shut down very fast.

Guess this is a common problem.

I don't think it's because of the update/new device reason that adriankhoo153 was saying. It takes really long (> 30 minutes) that I'd rather turn the power off...

really?

i use vista since beta and never encounter this. i leave my pc turn on quite long sometimes. around 20hours. i know there is a option to turn off "saving profile setting" in vistamanager. that might wat make the shutting down process so long.

but if i need 30min to shut down the pc, i rather unplug the power cord...

In my case, if this 'long shut down' happens..it will take about 15-20 mins to shut down..but like others said, I rather unplug the power cord.

but.. >30 minutes per shut down is too long

Open Regedit (WINDOWS KEY + R on your keyboard, or by clicking Start and typing on the search bar "regedit" without quotes. Hit Enter

Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l] On the right panel look for the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" string and change it value to 1000 by right clicking the string and selecting Modify...

Default Value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=20000

Modified value WaitToKillServiceTimeout=5000

just wondering, whats your memory size installed on the pc? if you already have it installed with 2gb ram, then it must be something wrong ith your vista..

just a suggestion, each time you want to shut down your pc, just use the ccleaner to clean up the cache/cookies/recently open document. might as well help the shut down process, maybe.

so far i dont have problem with mine, the booting and shut down takes only several seconds..

More likely it's the UAC. Right click on the EXE file and choose 'Run as Administrator'
