What is FAHremote?

http://fahremote.dcmalaysia.net/

FAHremote is basically a monitoring stats on a webpage. Where clients submit their details to a webserver (via FTP or XML-RPC). Everything then will be sorted out to show usernames (sub-teams), clients under one username, WUs, PPDs etc. We can monitor our PC remotely of which maybe machine that we can hardly monitor, be it at the office, at friends place or whatsoever. This stats page will benefit most sub-teams here as we can see how are we progressing, how much clients are under our name. It's also an easy way to cross refrence our PPD/machine specs between team members. Still, please take note that it might not be as accurate as FahMon because of long submit intervals and some psummary bug. I set it up to at least ease our daily monitoring process. Let's cut the crap, it's recommended that you guys add your machine to the server. Please ask your fellow teammates to do so too.

Read the HOW-TO and FAQ below.

Added on
HOW-TO for Windows

1. Download FAHremote 2.0.1.1 - here
2. Execute MSI based installer (NOTE: It doesn't matter if you pick typical, custom, or complete)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is needed for installation. Download here.

3. The configuration program will automatically launch
4. The general tab will be the first on displayed and checked on FTP.

Attached Image
NOTE: The interval is suggested to be 60 or 120 minutes to reduce server bandwidth load. Only set it lower if you are running a personal server or have permission to do so.

5. The Client tab is next

Attached Image

6. To add a client:
6a. Click on Add Client
6b. Fill in values - Client Info is your machine name, and it's recommended to use your nickname if you're folding under a subteam.
6c. Click on Update (NOTE: if you don't click it, nothing will be saved)

7. Next is the FTP tab.

Attached Image
Hostname: fahremote.dcmalaysia.net
Directory: /fahremote.dcmalaysia.net/logs
Username: fahremote
Password: fahremote1

8. Click on "Test Connection", should return "Test successful!".
NOTE: If you get an error that states that "Server does not return message to the message", it's a known bug, don't worry.

9. Click on "Create Config"
10. Click on Exit Program, as your config is saved.
11. Wait for few minutes before your name updated/shown on the page.

LINUX client (HOW-TO included): fahRemote-0.98.18.tar.bz2

Added on
FAQ

1) Is FAHremote compatible with Vista?
QUOTE(smartcat99s)
It is Vista compatible, however there needs to be a change in the setup routine.

When installing in the MSI, the config program does not run elevated, so just click exit.

Then go to c:\Program Files\FAHremote and run fahremotestart.exe as administrator. That will elevate it so that it has privlidges to write the config file needed to disk. If there is a network error when elevated, ignore it, and watch fahremote.log to see if it works.

2) How about FreeBSD?
QUOTE
Unfortunately, NO, it's currently not supported. They're looking into it at the moment. smile.gif
UPDATE: It's now supported!

3) Does network drives mapping and proxy work?
QUOTE
Currently, NO. Wait for the next FAHremote client release.

You could try use UNC path for network drives. It might or might not work. If it does work, it will somehow show CPU info wrongly. Just give it a try.

And example of UNC path: //MACHINENAME/path/to/folding

4) Please run your client as a service if possible. Why?
QUOTE
I check your log every now and then. If I encountered any error (be it improper shutdown, cannot upload WU etc.), I can restart your client manually through FAHremote. Unfortunately it only works on client running as service.

Help me, I will try my best to help you too by looking over your client. smile.gif

UPDATE: I have full permission to BETA test FAHremote on our team. thumbup.gif

QUOTE(smartcat99s)
I, as the author, DO give you permission to use FAHremote for your team (team 2999). I just want to know who to send PM's to when I fix some bugs in the client.

CREDITS: Team 11008 (MaxPC), the creator HeadSpin & _r2w_ben and to smartcat99s for detailed tutorial and support!! thumbup.gif

c9,

Thanks for setting this up. smile.gif Got a question, if I install the client, does it automatically set a schedule on its own to push the data to the server? Will I be able to set how often it does it?

Thanks.

Yup, for Windows it will automatically run as a service, you just need to put any value in the "Submit Intervals" box. Default is 120 minutes.

Linux client uses cron. You have to set it up manually, unfortunately.

Why don't you try it yourself. Yet to see other members on the list. smile.gif

This Fahremote is pretty kewl. I can see the huge difference between normal client and SMP client. PPD for these normal clients are just a little fraction comapre to SMPs, the most is 87 PPD on 3.0Ghz Xeon and 50-60 PPD on normal P4s. Damn! Where the hell is the QMD. That's on my side, yet to see what others are capable of. And the kewlest thing is, we can see what are your farm consist of. To adXrIsoD and HenryLow, you guys better be adding your clients there. Yeah, this is a special invitation. I know you're reading this adXrIsoD. smile.gif

Hey, on step 7. Do you mean the 'FTP' tab? I don't see the XML-RPC tab that you mentioned in this step. I put in the URL and the test connection failed. Do I have to put a username and password or is anonymous user allowed to upload.

I may have a problem with allowing an anonymous user to upload to the FTP server. unsure.gif

[edit]Aha... nvm. I missed checking the XML-RPC under the General tab. rolleyes.gif

c9, try downloading from here and see if it is faster: http://fahremote.dcmalaysia.net/FAHremoteRC3.msi

If it is, feel free to use this as the download link on http://myne.mine.nu/. I'll try to figure out how to make additional accounts to manage the subdomain this weekend to give you access.

Yeah, it's faster. About 10kbps average. Ok, do update me.

Added on April 14, 2007, 3:53 amHow long is your submit intervals?

You did click update, did you?

Check FAHremote.txt, does the log stated "sent"?

You did put this link to your XML-RPC? http://myne.mine.nu/fahremote_php/fahRemoteServer.php

If it take too long for your name to appear, or it didn't appear at all. I will look into it. Perhaps will be using FTP instead. And yeah, try to remove the client and re-add.

Added on April 14, 2007, 4:05 am
I will try to change my username in the client.cfg to RedBox.

It appears immediately. I know I am in the same network, but it proved that nothing's wrong with different username.. Do check your fahremote setting and log.

I am not sure how to rerun the client other than reinstalling it? I edited the FAHremote.ini to include the path and then stopped/restarted the service. I suppose that should work.

You know... this is cool stuff. I encourage everyone to try it. I see that it is useful for subteams as you can create and name the fahremote client according to your forum name. This will allow you to be able to tell who's who in your team.

RB

Added on April 14, 2007, 5:28 amHehehe.. didn't want you to know too much so every client will be Secret Client 1, 2, etc.... tongue.gif tongue.gif

Added on April 14, 2007, 5:30 amPlus one more good thing is, it will be super helpful in trying to troubleshoot someone's FAH client. Click on the client name to see the FAHlog.txt rather than having to ask people to post everytime.

Yeah, we can monitor who is still folding, if there's a problem etc. Try to click on your name, it will show your last updated Fahlog.txt.

Know too much? It's a P4 1.8Ghz, 1GB RAM and what else? LOL

Added on April 14, 2007, 5:38 amI'll try figure out the psummary bug. Because of that some of the protein is not shown, or either shown as timeless. Noticed that Win SMP only showing points, with no PPD and percentage of work. And p2148 protein shown as timeless WU. Stanford's psummary is not up to date and didn't list BETA/latest protein. I have to edit the psumarry.csv manually, still it didn't work. I have PM'ed them about this, hope there's solution.

Added on April 14, 2007, 5:48 amOk, I finally got double confirmation from smartycat99s. Thanks dude!! smile.gif

Below is the quote of his PM.

Now we can plan for the switch. What say you, RedBox?

And psummary bug fixed! It would show both p2418/6 and Win SMP correctly now. smile.gif

My host changed the self manage panel so I have to figure out how to add another user to manage fahremote.dcmalaysia.net. Going to leave work in about 15 mins and won't be able to get online until maybe about 7hrs later. Will send you a PM.

PM'ed!

I tried using FTP upload, we just have to point to the DIR where it keep users' logs on the server.

As on mine, /var/www/fahremote_php/logs.

I guess we'll be pointing to /home/fahremote instead, right? No problem here.
