Frustated with the internal direct flash and no money to buy an external flash, so want to find some DIY to diffuse the flash.

Found some DIY at
http://www.instructables.com/id/EFWF47HEFPEV2Z6BX8/

I spend RM7.40 for the Dunhill (who want free ciggies? lol), try it and it works. Even though the quality can't be compare to ext flash but at least this can help poor ppl like me in certain situation. So want to share it here, sharing is caring

Setup : Take out all the ciggies, smoke all the ciggies if u can, lol. Take out the gold paper as well, in that website, he using the gold paper but i found the result is better without it.
Cut the bottom of the box to open it. And setup as below, done..

Yah i know it is ugly, maybe u can wrap the dam thing with colorful paper and label it as Nikkor SB-900 laugh.gif

I try to test it to take a photo at my living room with low light condition, without flash, the photo gonna be very very dark..

So i test it with both direct flash and the flash with the Dunhill diffuser and manually control the flash so both photo brightness are almost identical.

The result?

Taken with direct flash.
As u can see, there are some extreme reflection on the tin and smooth surface of the plastic. And notice the wall as well, got those reflection caused by the tin.

Now with the Dunhill diffuser.
As u can see, the light is properly diffused, no more reflection on the wall and not so extreme reflection on the surface of the tin and plastic bottle. But the auto white balance gonna run off.

After PP the previous photo by adjusting the white balance, the photo cames out nice, at least for me sweat.gif

the exposure time is 1/500 for both pictures. Doesn't justify why you need to use flash. How about trying it under lower lighting condition when you will need to use a flash (e.g. 1/10)

Erm..do u read my 1st post? The lighting condition is very bad, and indeed i need to use flash to get that brightness, else the whole photo will be darken

The reason for using the 1/500s shutter speed is to isolate ambient lighting from the shot. By setting the D40 at its maximum X-Sync speed, we can see the effect of the flash diffuser on the subject.

Of course if you can also use this diffuser with in slow sync mode, but you wont be able to observe the diffused flash differences, which is the whole point of this experiment.
