> Mesh network - P2P style Community Broadband!, Your location info is needed!

Where are you located? If we were to set up broadband "hubs" or an ISP that serves a small area, which area could we start with first? Perhaps the place with the most? If you area is not listed, choose the NEAREST one.

Hi guys,

One possibility for better broadband here is the creation of a mesh network, similiar to FON - The World's Largest Wi-Fi Community - check out the site and you'll see the concept. Basically everyone is a "hub" in a way - the connection comes from a main transmitter/various sources, and then it hops from house to house - everyone transmits/receives as well. It's kind of like P2P, but in real life.

I'm not sure of the legality of it (whether we can retransmit our Streamyx connections to others, even if its idle), but what if we were to use say, other services, or to collectively lease one large pipe?

In theory, what you would need is a good connection (leased line/satellite/HSDPA/WiMax), and a way to spread it across a certain area, perhaps through a combination of hardware and open source (Open Source WLAN Management)

However, let's try to assess where everyone is, to determine where we could start.

Let's assume a fee of RM50-RM80 a month for a reliable 1-2MBps connection, with no throttling.

Let me hear your thoughts on this...

the idea of the FON is we share our existing internet access with others thru our WiFi router.

we need to connect ourself to the radius server for access n authentication.

when WiFi cell in that area increase, then we are in total wireless.
we need so network specialist and linux expert to help us in this project

Question:
How many people willing to share the streamyx?
How many people got the skill to setup all these?
Which location is the best to start the project?
Are we allow to share our internet connection(streamyx) with others?
How to configure that extend the WiFi connection from 1 cell to another cell?

take it from a guy who have experience in developing both olsr and aodv mesh networks. mesh protocols is not that effective. if it was, it would've deployed by major isp already.

here are some things to ponder:
- with every hops, your bandwidth will decrease.
- since everyone is a router, security is compromised(packet sniffing).
- with no centralized control, it will get out of hand pretty easy.
- trust me, the 3rd hop is already too slow for comfort.
- you might have to go through 5 hops only to get yourself to the international line.

ps: chillispot is only a wireless client management system. ever heard of TM's hotspot? that's how chilli works. plus, chilli will only give you a private ip and it can't travel across routers. chillispot can't work with mesh networks since it's a centralized solution.

Ya, you got ur point.
Spore is doing WiMesh network around city town. But they feedback the infrastructure still unstable.
and Mesh network, too many hops.

Seriously, if you want to setup a community-based wireless network.
Go with a Star or Spoke & Hub system. Something along the lines of seattlewireless etc...

Forget MESH, unless you have the financial capacity to play with Dual or Quad radio mesh equipment. With every hop in a single-radio mesh network, you'll lose approximately 50% of your throughput. In actual (live) environments, by the time you get to the 3rd hop its pretty useless.
