They said: "1% of users using 30% bandwidth".

So how much is Tmnet's total bandwidth and how many users can it handle?

Correct me if I'm wrong...

1. What is their total bandwidth?
Population in malaysia: 27 mil
Broadband penetration rate: 2.5%
So number of broadband users: 675,000

1% of users: 6,750
Assuming they download at: 800 kbit/s (1MB package)
1% of users using 30% bandwidth = 5.15 Gbit/s

In other words, TMnet's total bandwidth is about: 17.16 Gbit/s

2. How many users does it take to fully utilize their bandwidth?
3.35% of users: 22,612 users
Assuming they download at: 800 kbit/s (1MB package)
3.35% of users is using 100% bandwidth: 17.252 Gbit/s (!)

So only 22,612 users can fully get what they paid for (1MB package).

Looking at the current number of broadband users we have, we have oversubscription ratio of (675,000 / 22,612) = 29.85.

That means TMnet's available bandwidth can support each user with 26.8 kbit/s.

Any other ideas?

Your calculation seems accurate tongue.gif. My download rate now are hovering in somewhere around 20kbps.

Or make it short & simple.

1% user using 30% of bandwidth.
100% of bandwidth can only serve 100/30 = 3.33% of users. notworthy.gif sweat.gif

and

1% user = 30% bandwidth
100% user = 3000% bandwidth
which also means TMNet need to expand their bandwidth 30x shocking.gif
in order to fully satisfy their users (assume all users will fully utilize their bandwidth)

It's hopeless.

They should have to stop asking peoples to register streamyx/close the subscribtion since it is already over subscribtion.
Yet they still promoting like hell.

BIGGEST REASON FOR WHAT THEY DO IS BECAUSE OF MONEY.

I agree 100%.

They revealed the numbers, so if the math is accurate, they are short selling. Damn! vmad.gif

overselling is a must, it's what makes the price affordable. also not everyone uses 100% of the line all the time so there is no actuall need to have 100% on standby for everyone. usually a quota of 1:20 is pretty adequate.
the problem that tm is actually facing is that they do not have enough low bandwidth users (maybe because they are too expensive still??) who will in turn subsidise the heavy users. i think i mentioned this issue before but well...

what tm needs is to get a higher penetration rate, then the whole problem will be gone cause then the mix will be right. in the beginning one only attracts savvy users who use more than the average user. it's their job to accelerate now... but what are they doing? hitting the brakes (aka throttling). back to DSL-101 tm staff wink.gif

quite true. overselling is something expected when providing residential broadband. the maximum overselling ratio is however controlled by MCMC. while i have no figures on TMNet's overselling ratio, unless proven otherwise, i believe that TMNet is keeping to MCMC's guideline (and please do not go into any conspiracy theory on the govt & TM).

throttling is not unique to TMNet, since some american/european ISPs does it too. not to mention the draconian monthly bandwidth allocation imposed by australian/new zealand ISPs.

the major problem with TMNet's infrastructure is that most of the traffic is going outwards, as oppose to the US and south korea, where most of the traffic remains local. since that is the case, peerage cost remains high.

as PJusa says, what TM needs to do is attract more users. but at the same time, they would need to build up local content so that the users wouldn't waste international bandwidth.

The reason why TM Net only have high bandwidth users is because all the light users use cyber cafe internet access like once a week or school, uni or office internet access.

Dial up is not 45k bytes. If that was the case then my streamyx 512k is dial up. Dial up speed is around 40-45kbits.

high bandwidth user? 1mb line is HIGH? blush.gif

dude.. dial up is only 5kb per second MAX.

512kb streamyx suppose running at 50kb per second, and it is 'always on' connection means we should get 50kbps everytime we use the internet. in oversea, thailand, singapore, their broadband is ALWAYS ON and CONSTANT speed. dont believe me? try to ask your singapore friend.

i'd say anything above 30 GB is high usage

if the uptake on the 1 MB was better for the casual server, the subsidising game every ISP plays when it comes to heavy users works. my very personal guess is that 88 RM is simply put a too heavy price tag for most. if we had more people using a 22 RM / 33 RM / 44 RM package along with better availability of ports etc. then maybe things would look different.

another idea for TM would be to forgo the monthly rental on the phone line for DSL users or offer an option of no actual phone line (just use the cable, dont open the line for calls) to make the package cheaper. most people rely on their h/p for calls so the line is an extra cost that needs to be considered.

i think we (streamyx users) deserve more for what we are paying right now..
many customers are not satisfied with the service...
especially the transfer rate...

i've been getting a constant 180 kps to 200kbps constantly for my downloads on streamyx.

Been getting it since they restored the taiwan link..
