option 5, great shots comes from great minds and great minds comes from great time(spent on shooting).

Another this is that a pro is a person who is not a scrooge when comes to knowledge..

If "pro" can sell his photographs, obviously his/her photographs are worth buying and are considered beautiful. Otherwise no money coming in mah.

The real definition of the word 'professional' means that someone is working full time as a photographer. That's his primary vocation, be it 60%, 80% or 100%. And guess what, IMHO that professional doesnt necessarily have to take 'good' photographs to be a professional, as long as he spends majority of his time generating income from photography. Shocking huh?

Another comparative analogy is sports; for e.g. what is the diff between pro and amateur golfer? Both also handicap 0 wor and both play just as well. The "pro" is one who plays as a job, the amateur may work as a waiter or accountant or GM or director, but has a wonderful gift for playing and not earning money for it. Hence during competition, only Professional golfers can claim prize money and an amateur cannot, even if the amateur is the overall champion!

Therefore, a professional photographer with a 0 handicap could shoot crap, but plays excellent golf. At the end of the day his job title is "Photographer" and not golfer.

Good survey but choices are not mutually exclusive. I 2nd goldfries POV. Maybe if you change the question to "What makes a successful professional photographer?" and then give responses which is relevant to the question then it makes more sense.

the real definition of professional photographer is that he/she earns his/her living through photography. If you are working a full time job and doing photography as part time income; you are considered amateur.

The real definition of "pro" is actually skillful, the one who can captures very best moments are consider skillful, not pro if he/she is not earning only through photography.

I think a lot of people is confuse with the term "pro" because it has become so common that we use it to define "pro" = skillful.

Professional by default is define where a person earn 100% of his/her money through the profession he/she is doing.

A pro gamer is someone who is paid up to play the game entirely from day to night. A pro photographer is the same.

Professional is not equal to "skillful"

being professional means u have a certain professional body that governs your career.

for example;

1. if u wanna sue somebody, u'll have a Lembaga Photography / Board of Photography with all the laws with certain photography Acts and By-Laws which u can refer to.

2. if u wanna put your professional fees on photography, u have a certain scale of minimum fees under malaysia law which u can refer to. Like architects building a house or engineers, they have Lembaga Jurutera, Lembaga Architect, Architect's Act, and so on..

in photography do we have such thing? if we dont have, its not technically a professional career... we can simply put any fees based on our experience, but who r u to decide what level of experience u have? did u evaluate urself? professionals are evaluated by professional bodies to get IR for engineers, AR for Architects, SR for surveyors and so on...

its a tricky topic we r discussing here..

all in all, these are just my 2 cents.. pardon my point of view since im a practicing architect

Exactly! A Pro can shoot lowyah pictures. Equipment, percentage of income all dont define a pro. I've seen beautiful pix from amateurs.

the key is to understand the words PROFESSIONAL and AMATUER.

they are not related to SKILLS. i've seen professionals with average skills. i've seen amatuers with high skills.

a professional is always expected to have skills along with their profession but this is not always true.

just this 4 items how much already?

- Nikon D3
- Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR
- Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8
- Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8

i think it's essential to get this out of people's head - post-processing has been done for decades and it will always be part and parcel of photography, even magazine teach how to post-process.

what was previously done in dark rooms are now done on computer.

using software doesn't mean turning shit to gold, it doesn't make anyone less a photographer.

do understand that even with digital sensors, they're not perfect and often need tuning to make it better.
