A professional photographer is someone whose job is photography... the question isn't asking how you'd define a good photography, just how you'd define a pro photographer...

Strictly speaking, a "professional" is someone who makes money on a certain niche 100%. If anyone says he or she is a pro photographer, I expect him or her to take photos for a living, nothing else. Part-timers, 20% or 70% timers don't qualify with the title pro.

Qualification and expensive equipments are for shows. It also doesn't qualify someone for the title pro. Lat doesn't have a cartooning degree but we consider him a pro because he makes a living meting out cartoons that sell. Those artists in Central Markets are pros too.

Now, if we are talking about "photographing like a pro", that's entirely a different story. Anyone can do that, part-timers or sometimes amateurs. Out of 1000 or 2000 pics, surely there will be some frames that turn out fantastic. We can call these shots "like pro".

the problem is that most people lack the basic of understanding of terms.

like what i mentioned earlier (and other place).

there's difference between PROFESSIONAL (a.k.a. PRO) and EXPERT.

Yeah, I have seen some "pros" moonlight with side jobs but that's Malaysians, as usual. Elsewhere around the world, it's strictly a focus career.

I'd let everyone in on an example. I know an Australian who has a degree in architecture but only practiced it upon graduation for a few months. For the past many years, he has been traveling around the world specializing in architecture photography (yup, and he doesn't has any glitzy photography degrees and what nots). Google his name or see example of his work here http://www.interiordesignawards.com.au/res...d=5&entryid=118. His website is "under construction" forever. The man doesn't need web presence or publicity. Today, he is well known among architects all over the world. This is where our Malaysians "pros" slacked. Being good in KL alone doesn't say much. The market is so small and saturated. Everyone wants to do weddings. See, in photography, one got to be different to be exceptional. One gotta be so focused and unique that the world is your oyster.

I had the honor of watching him weave his magic when he was in Malaysia recently shooting a newly built home. It was phenomenal watching him survey the site, move, set up, snap and off he flies to another assignment in some other part of the world. One knows he live, breath and dream photography.

Now that's what I call pro.

Well on my personal opinion it'd be an Option 5. A pro photog doesn't have to be well known or earns money from it.. (not saying that Option 1 doesn't work, just that I strongly put in on Option 5).. it's how good his photos are. An added 'pro' bonus if it conveys a meaningful message on the photog.
