Hi,

I'm looking for a laptop which can support Linux well. I've heard that Asus, IBM and Toshiba are pretty good but I'm looking for comments from people who have tried it already and their experience on using it on their own laptops (not necessarily from the brands that I've mentioned).

Oh, and I'm a Fedora user.

Thanks. smile.gif

running an ibm r51, but bought it for 2-3 years. been running linux on it for 2 years.

work like charm on ubuntu, still can't get the internal modem working. thats the only problem. otherwise it is good. by then ubuntu comes with wireless firmware, and run and i810 graphics which have open source driver.

Thanks. I was thinking of getting one with Intel's graphics chipset as well since they have open source drivers.

Basically, I'm thinking of using it more for software development, simulation (not graphical) and working (reports etc.).

What I did last time was google my laptop's model to see what other people said about it. Works better if you choose the bigger brands, and also if the model is not too new.

The Compaq Evo N800w is my spare machine. Using Ubuntu on it, everything works, just have not tested the internal modem as yet.

Acer 5004MWLCi. Work very fine on FC6 except 3D beryl and internal wireless card.
I think nvidia card is better than ati card for Fedora user.

OK. I guess there are no more response. I'd like to thank everyone who responded. I think most laptops seem to work without a problem but I think I'll be going for 1 with the Intel graphics chipset and make sure that the internal wireless modem has a driver and ACPI is supported. Those are probably the 2 most important parts that may have problems.

Using Ubuntu Edgy on an old Fujitsu Lifebook C2220, everything works except the MMC card reader, touchpad (not working fully - detected as ps2 mouse)... Wireless via a Belkin G PCMCIA card... The onboard ATI 340M graphics chip runs Beryl well enough, but with blur and wobbly turned off. Rain doesn't work at all.

I think getting a lappy with intel graphics for general use a good choice as the intel graphics chipset has the most mature open-source driver, as long as you don't plan to game with it... thumbup.gif
