Added on April 11, 2008, 10:41 amSince yesterday, my dedicated server provider raised the issue regarding P2P Traffic again. And when I checked this morning, they simply shut my server down. I'm going to resolve this matter with them within these few days. If I'm not able to get a green light from them, I will either switch provider or stop the service with the later being more likely. But rest assured, if that's happen all subscribers will receive their refund. Sorry for the inconveniences.

hi virtual, did your server provider object to p2p traffic in general or because of certain torrents? how many warnings did u receive from them? and why now after being lenient and quiet about p2p use for so long?

i hope that you'll resolve the issue. placate them somehow, or switch server. it will be a shame to shut down for good. anyway, there's 10 days left for my present subscription, so i'll cross my fingers.

if you decide to quit, i'll have to start hunting for VPN alternatives (and you may have to also, if you're a regular torrent user).

Just to chip in my 2 cents, we were also recently struck with a spate of infringement notices although we were with this hosts for over a year and had previously tolerated them. They just decided enough was enough I guess and started terminating our servers en masse.

This is something most VPN providers will have to deal with eventually (the placating can only go so far) so for the first few months while they are running they may think they can brush off the infringement notices. That's until you get some 6-7 notices in one day....

We managed to switch some 5-6 servers within a day at significant cost and stress but yeah this is a reality that we providers have to deal with. Warnings and terminations don't really work that effectively and even if you terminate the user after warning him, the infringement has already happened (and the hosts are already unhappy to begin with since they think you're not doing anything to stop it).

There aren't that many hosts that support such high bandwidth as well at affordable prices so as soon as you are blacklisted from a host, it gets harder and harder to find a suitable host alternative. I'm sure virtual would have similiar thoughts ( i believe he changed hosts a few times due to bandwidth reasons ).

Anyway virtual was my first VPN provider and I wish him all the best biggrin.gif. You always ran a tight ship!

yeah, i'm now getting an inkling of how much headache vpn providers must go through. and your untiring efforts are much appreciated.

however, if server providers keep shutting down their servers on you and you find your options for other hosts shrinking, you could consider some drastic measures. Like say.. implement blocks, even DHT connections. to certain high risk torrent trackers and make use of the bluetack block lists to filter out bad IPs. and do these on an administrator level. is that feasible?

anyway, such measures are already being employed on at least one TF service which i'm using. it's annoying and restricting, but i get by.

The effectiveness of bluetack block lists is suspect. There has been some discussion on this and it was not whether the block lists were outdated or didn't cover everything....it was more of a question of whether when you are checking which IP to block, doesn't this already alert the authority you're on the tracker? I am not particularly sure myself to be honest. I know it prevents data from coming from the blocked IP but not whether you have queried it in the first place... Not being a network expert (i leave that to my partner) just have to leave this to speculation. Furthermore it adds a additional load on the server.

It is also about business feasibility I suppose. If we start blocking public 'high risk' trackers...customers will just shift elsewhere so it's a very precarious balancing act. Now you could say, just keep the good ones, but the reality is majority of peeps still use public trackers.

Hi Lester and Reuben, thanks for the insights. The problem is I'm doing it on part time and keep migrating server is really a big headache for me. Besides, our server is in Europe and euro is getting stronger by day. In fact, I have been making loses for the past few months but as I myself is a heavy torrent user, I settle it with my own pocket. Anyway guys, I'm closing this VPN service. Thanks for all the support so far. It has been a great time with you all for more than a year especially ppl who still stick with us until the end. Although now the server is running, it just a matter of time when they're going to block it again. I think is fair that refund is counted as of today according to the screen of my VPN administration system below. So, happy torrenting while you can fellas.
