1. What is tmnet streamyx? Broadband ?

tmnet streamyx is a high-speed broadband Internet access service which provides 'always on' connection to the internet with speed/bandwidth from 512k up to 2mbps. With the high-speed connectivity/bandwidth, the service is ideal to support most broadband application such as, Web Hosting, video streaming, e-commerce, distance learning and others.


2. What are the technologies used?

The technology used for tmnet streamyx is xDSL. The xDSL types chosen to support tmnet streamyx network are ADSL and SDSL te

chnologies.


3. How fast is tmnet streamyx?

The packages range from 512k up to 2Mbps Internet access speed and it is on best effort basis.


4. How to subscribe to tmnet streamyx?

You can come personally to Clickers, selected TMpoint (formerly known as Kedai Telekom)l or contact our Authorized Resellers or Customer Interaction Center 24 hours a day at 1-300-88-9515.


5. I am a business applicant. Can I apply to tmnet streamyx basic package?

No. tmnet streamyx basic package can be subscribed by personal applicant only. Business applicant can apply to tmnet streamyx enterprise and corporate package.


6. Can I subscribe to tmnet streamyx online?

Yes. TM Net had just introduced the Online Registration for tmnet streamyx. You can now check for service availability and register online. In addition, you can also check for your application status even if you register through the normal procedure. Click here to register online.


7. Is there any requirement that I have to fulfill before I register online?

Yes. To apply for tmnet streamyx via online:
- The applicant must be the owner of the telephone line and;
- Not being black listed by TM Net
* Customer is requested to visit Clickers or the nearest TMpoint (formerly known as Kedai Telekom) if they do not comply with the above pre-requisite requirements.

9. Where do I pay my tmnet streamyx bill?

You can pay your bill at Clickers, the nearest TMpoint (formerly known as Kedai Telekom) or any TM Net payment outlet. You can also pay online through https://tmbill.tm.net.my/


10. Can I resell the services?

No.


11. What happens if I receive a call while accessing the Internet?

You can answer the call as a normal telephone call. The Internet access service will not be interrupted as your telephone set is connected to a microfilter, which separates voice and data signal. The above condition applicable for ADSL subscriber only. SDSL does not support telephony.


12. What is the tmnet streamyx minimum subscription period?

You have to subscribe tmnet streamyx service at a minimum period of 1 (ONE) year. If you terminate your account within the Minimum Subscription Period, you shall be responsible for fees chargeable for the service on the remainder of the Minimum Subscription Period.


13. Can I have more than one tmnet streamyx connection to my premise?

Yes, as long as you have extra telephone line because each tmnet streamyx connection requires one direct/dedicated telephone line.


14. What are the differences between ADSL and SDSL?

ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. It allows you to simultaneously access the net and use the phone or fax (at the same time). SDSL stands for Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. The difference between ADSL and SDSL is; ADSL has a different upstream and downstream data transfer rate (upstream higher than the downstream) whereas SDSL offers the customer a symmetric upstream and downstream bandwidth to the customer (eg. 1.5Mbps SDSL package offers the customer 1.5Mbps downstream speed as well as 1.5Mbps upstream speed). Technically, SDSL also does not allow voice/fax (PSTN) over the same copper.


15. What are the differences between xDSL connection and Dial-up connection?

xDSL does not dial to public switch telephone exchange, it connects the customer direct to the Internet. It is fixed to the telephone number which you provided when you apply for the service. In contrast, dial-up modem can be used at any premises to log to tmnet.


16. What are the differences between xDSL technology and ISDN?

ISDN allows you to have many different digital features, such as PABX and digital fax. ISDN requires you to have a special telephone line (i.e. you have to do a new wiring) while xDSL does not (it uses the existing copper line at your premise). ISDN is a dial-up service while xDSL is a always-on connection. Also there are wide ranges of bandwidth available for xDSL (ranging from 384kbps to 2Mbps) compared to ISDN which only have limited range of bandwidth.


17. What are the differences between xDSL and Leased Line?

Leased line let users connect from point to point without sharing the channel with other Internet users and also without restrictions to the distance. Thus leased line offers a better security with the service typically ranging from 64kbps to 2Mbps. Leased line is very expensive compared to xDSL. xDSL is however easier to install at the customer premises. xDSL is categorized as best effort service while leased line is premier or guaranteed bandwidth service.


18. What is the minimum requirement needed to apply for tmnet streamyx?

For Windows OS computers, you need to have a PC with minimum Pentium processor and 32MB RAM. Windows 95 (Windows 98 is preferred), Windows XP or Windows NT operating system, 2.1GB Hard Disk (20MB of free hard disk space) and Network Interface Card (NIC).
For MAC OS computers you need to have a Power PC Macintosh with system 7.6.1 or later 32 Mb RAM, 10 Mb of free hard disk space, Ethernet port, Mac OS X version 10.1.2 above only (Note: Lower version are not supported at the moment)
Also of course, you need to have an active telephone line to connect to the tmnet streamyx modem.


19. Do I need a special modem?

Yes. You need to use certified DSL modem, which is compatible with tmnet streamyx that can be purchased from your nearby outlet.


20. Do I need to purchase a modem?

TM Net will provide the xDSL modem for customers who subscribed for Streamyx Basic with modem package, Streamyx Enterprise package and Streamyx Corporate package. Only modems approved by TM Net will work finely with tmnet streamyx.
Note: Upon termination of tmnet streamyx, customers have to return the provided modems/splitters/microfilter to TMpoint (formerly known as Kedai Telekom). TM Net will impose charges for unreturned modems/splitters/microfilter.

For Streamyx Basic without modem packages, TM Net will not provide the modem. Customer needs to buy the modem, splitter & microfilter. For further detail, please contact Telekom Sales & Services Sendirian Berhad (TSSSB) Service Centre at 03-22971200 ext 261 or 255 or please refer to Certified DSL Modem List for the list of modems compatible with tmnet streamyx which can be purchased from your nearby outlets.


21. If I do not have a telephone line, how do I subscribe to tmnet Streamyx?

You need to apply (visit your nearest TMpoint (formerly known as Kedai Telekom)) and install a phone line before you can enjoy the service. (The above condition applies for tmnet Streamyx ADSL packages only).


22. Do I need a new telephone line?

For tmnet Streamyx ADSL you may use your existing telephone line. For tmnet Streamyx SDSL, you need a new copper line (TM personnel will apply for you upon application of the service).


23. Do I need additional wiring at my house / office?

tmnet Streamyx will be installed at where the telephone line is terminated. You need to do the additional wiring should you want to use the service at other part of your premise than where the phone line is terminated at your own cost.


24. Do I need to install a network card?

Yes. You need the Network Interface Card (NIC) in order for your PC to communicate with the modem.


25. Which areas are served by tmnet Streamyx?

26. What is the mailbox space/capacity allocated for tmnet streamyx user's e-mail?

TM Net has upgraded tmnet streamyx user's mailbox space from 4M to 10M. You can upgrade your mailbox from 4M to 10M for FREE via Selfcare at https://tmbill.tm.net.my


27. Can I enjoy tmnet streamyx if my telephone line is using fiber connection?

Yes. You can still apply for tmnet streamyx even if your telephone line is using fiber connection. However, the service is only available at selected areas. You can check the service availability via our Online Registration or visit our nearest outlets for more information.


28. What are the additional value added services that I get if I subscribe to tmnet streamyx?

Contract for Streamyx-in-a-box is 2 years. I think many people doesnt know about this. Recently i went to terminate a 1 year plus old Streamyx account and i got to know about this.

First,you need to know which brand of modem or router you are using.

Second,Find out how to log into your router or modem;mostly 192.168.1.1 or 10.1.1.1,etc [Please consult your manual first]

If you dont know what is the gateway of the router which normally will bring up to the login screen

In commant prompt,run ipconfig /all and copy the default gateway Ip and login.

Third, go to the modem status page and it will show roughly like this depends on the brand of modem

SNR margin the higher the better [that means your signal getting strong , and your connection is stable and it would not 'hop']

Line attenuantion the lower the better[that means you would have less noise, thus you would face less disconnections]

Go to command prompt. Type ping www.yahoo.com .It should give you around 200++ ms for internation server and 20++ to 50++ ms for local site.

Sometimes trojan or worm take up ur bandwitdth.How to do a quick test.After restart your computer,Dont open any site or msn.GO to command prompt.Type netstat to know is there anything running behind.

Problem is ur house wiring and the phone pole earth wiring.Reason,the water take away the bandwidth from ur phone line hence very low SNR andvery high attenuation.So u will keep dc.

Tested,Using Fax and those blinking lite or those funky phone will affect the SNR and line attenuation reading and it will affect the speed.The best is to use normal telekom basic calling phone.

A: First, check your SNR margin to see if it is under par, if it is then you should call direct to TM and not TMNet to complain about that. If your SNR margin is alright, then proceed to call TMNet Customer Service and report a miscapped line of yours.

A: There is no way to uncap your line. Just pay for what you get.

First, with Streamyx Hotspot@Home, you need a phone line to apply for this service. It just like a normal streamyx package but you will also be supplied with Modem with Wifi capable router (RM280- 1 time payment). Currently, free usb 2.0 256mb flashdrive will include as a giveaway gift. The rest of fees, is just same as normal streamyx package RM88/month for 1mbps and RM66/month for 512kbps and so on...

Contrast to Streamyx Wireless, u don't have to had a phone line to subscribe but it only applicable to certain area only (currently at Shah Alam and Labuan). It use motorola canopy technology to link between ur house and Streamyx AP Centre. Basically, they will install fixed antenna outside your house/apartment and with cable it will connected to your pc/router. So in term of mobility, it is just as same as fixed-line streamyx. Streamyx Wireless Package fees is RM99/month for 512kbps speed and contract for 1 year.

There are alot of choices out there beside TMNet. Anyway Tmnet Hotspot may be a solution for your needs. For more info check out at

Well , there are many alternatives to Streamyx. Currently , JARING seems to be the best alternative to Streamyx. Apart from that you have Maxis Broadband [if you're within their coverage zone] , DiGi EDGE [Wireless Broadband] , Maxis 3G/Celcom 3G [Wireless Broadband] Celcom 3.5G (2Mbps) , and there are also numerous 'small' broadband services that are being offered here in the forum. So the best way is that , to check with the respective company's website for more information on pricing and coverage

You Can DIY easily since u have the modem and username/password urself.Sometimes those contractor will charge you,so dont get conned.

DSL lite blinking means adsl status not yet ready.Wait.

If dsl lite on,U can use ur fren account to login but you user name is not activated yet.

The best is u go to Tmpoint yourself and register streamyx.But reseller and contractor have goodies for you like free modem and pendrive.So it's up to you.It's almost the same nowadays.

The tmnet streamyx In-A-Box package includes an ADSL Ethernet Modem, tmnet streamyx In-A-Box Quick Guide, tmnet streamyx User Guide Booklet, tmnet streamyx Self Installation CD set-up wizard, RJ 45 cable, ADSL splitter, an AC power supply adaptor, Warranty card and phone cable.

The CD has a simple step by step interactive guide that will show you how to set up your hardware and software step by step.

Introduction - Bytes vs Bits
Sometimes you download a file via your browser. Example:

Notice the 18.5kB/sec? That is your speed in KiloBytes per second.

But you distinctly remember that you subscribed to TMNet's 512kbps/256kbps plan. Why aren't you downloading the file at 512kbps as promised by TMNet? This is where CAPITALISATION comes in. Note that in the 18.5kB/sec, the B is capitalised? This signifies Bytes. The 512kbps advertised by TMNet is 512 kiloBITS.

Remember this equation; 1 Byte is 8 Bits.

So, if you want to find out how fast you SHOULD be downloading, just take 512 and divide it by 8. Which should give you the equation;
512/8 = 64


Best Effort Basis
That 18.5kB should show 64kB, right? Well, not quite. TMNet also states that speeds are on a "best effort" basis. There are factors like peak and non-peak hours, how many TMNet subscribers are on your node, even weather can affect your speed. As a general guideline, you should almost always get 70% of your top speed when downloading a file from a reliable server. So at the very best, you can expect your downloads to blaze at 44.8kBps if you are on the 512/256 plan.

Calculations to TMNet's most popular plans
Dial Up "pay as you use" plan: 56K
56/8 = 7kB per sec (4.9kB nominal speed)

Basic 512: 512kbps/256kbps
512/8 = 64kB per sec downloading (44.8kB nominal)
256/8 = 32kB per sec uploading (22.4kB nominal)

Basic 1.0M: 1024kbps/512kbps
1024/8 = 128kB per sec downloading (89.6kB nominal)
512/8 = 64kB per sec uploading (44.8kB nominal)

*nominal means the normal speed you should get

Special Note: These rates are for ADSL lines. SDSL rates are different.

1. Make sure you call TMNet's Customer Support at 1-300-88-9515.

2. When speaking to the Customer Care Representative, let them know clearly that you have tried most of their suggested methods. (They are just reading from a manual anyway, they most probably do not know what it is that they are suggesting)

3. Let them know that you want to file a report and remember to note down the report number!

4. Wait 1 or 2 days for your report to be processed. If a technician calls back and asks to come to your house to check, set a date and hopefully this solves your problem.

5. After it is all said and done, draft up an e-mail; label it "Request for monthly fee rebate". In the email, state that you are highly dependant on the internet and that you have loss productivity over the past few days/weeks/months that you were not connected and that you would greatly appreciate it if you could be given a rebate for the time that you were not connected. The email should be sent to: streamyx@tm.net.my

Don't forget to add your contact number and report number so that they can do some checking.

Note: Rebate amounts do not exceed 1 month. Typically, rebates given are in the range of 1 day to 1 month.

If this process fails; "wash, rinse and repeat" as many times as necessary until you achieve desired results. Bear in mind that it takes as much as 3 business days to a full week for someone to read your email, do the checking and paperwork and get back to you with any news.

A: When I first heard this term, the simple definition for it was, "ISPs are intentionally throttling (choking, reducing) bandwidth for Bittorrent users". That statement alone, without supporting facts sounds pretty bad.

Well, not necessarily. First of all you have to separate traffic shaping and bandwidth throttling. They are NOT the same thing. Defined properly, bandwidth throttling is a form of traffic shaping.

So let's start with the bigger definition. Traffic shaping. What is TRAFFIC SHAPING? Simply put, traffic shaping is where an ISP (usually) can de-burst bandwidth on a particular network.

Deburst? Yeah, like when you download something, and instead of the chart going UP and DOWN throughout the entire download, it PLATEAUS.

So BEFORE debursting your download chart will look like this /\_/\_/\

AFTER debursting your download chart will look like this ----------

Numerically speaking, your download before will go at 40kbps -> 5kbps -> 25kbps -> 38kbps and so on and so forth. After applying traffic shaping, your download will just steady out at 20kbps and remain that way.

Anyone who's ever downloaded something will tell you that downloading at 20kbps steadily is better than going up and down the scale.

Now, on to bandwidth throttling. Now this is more focused. Bandwidth throttling is usually done by ISPs to control the bandwidth of a SPECIFIC type of traffic on a network. So in this case, an ISP would limit the speed of Bittorrent users on the network, while allowing more HTTP and FTP downloads to go through.

As you can see traffic shaping has it's benefits. Bandwidth throttling can be seen as a infringement of freedoms, but ISPs are businesses and they need to ensure that other users do not suffer just because some people want to download stuff via Bittorrent.
