I attended a Sony handycam workshop last Saturday at Sony Style KLCC. Very informative. I wish there are more workshops and seminar for handycam users (regardless brand u use) and also video editing program.

may i know where to get sanyo cg-10?

i got mine at RM790 with no memory card, from a online shop. This is not a local warranty set, looks like from singapore. However, the seller provides 1 year warranty.

Hello sifus,

I'm looking for a camcorder. My budget is around RM1400. I'd like a HDD or SD card (flash memory) camcorder. Currently my eyes are set on the Panasonic SDR-SD26. However, I'm have a few questions:

1. Should I get a HD camcorder instead? I've been back and forth with this and I know it's gonna be a bit more costly but I'm really unsure. What determines whether or not I should get a HD cam?

2. Other models apart from the one I mentioned that is good and around my budget?

Thanks in advance

HD or SD camcorder? I think this has been discussed before in this thread. That depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to just shoot, watch and then forget about it, then SD would do. But if you want to keep the videos for memories and for future viewing, then should get HD. A HD video will definitely look better than SD videos. But there are other issues; watching your HD videos on TV (normal or HDTV) should not be a problem but if you want to view or do serious editing on your PC, you will need a fairly powerful PC since HD requires more computing resources than SD. Sharing with friends also OK since you can burn HD videos to standard DVD using common editing softwares (at a reduced quality but still better than SD). SD files are easier to handle, editing wise, and HD files are also much bigger so you'll need more storage space.

There other deciding factor is your budget since a good HD camcorder will cost more than a SD camcorder especially the top brands of Canon/Sony/Panasonic. But you can get better value for money if you consider the second tier brands such as Sanyo, Samsung or JVC which could be just as good.

It is difficult to recommend any particular model since each has its pros and cons with different features which you may or may not need. Read the reviews online and test them out locally to see which one fits your requirement. You can see sample videos at Vimeo or Youtube but some could have been edited or rendered from the original so may not be the true picture, so to speak. There are also some users feedback in this thread for some models. Also buying online seems to be much cheaper if you are game for it. Good luck.

Thanks a lot. Sorry if it's been discussed. Video editing has become one of my hobbies over the years and this is my first step in taking my hobby further. I have a fairly powerful XPS laptop which I believe should be fine for editing. I guess I'll need to fork out a bit more to be able to afford a HD cam then. Currently looking a the Panasonic HDC-SD10/20. Any comments on it would be awesome.

I own Panasonic TM-300 and also Dell Studio Dual Core P8400 (2.4MHz).... I feel HD video file is a monster. Even with this processor, my editing struggling. I love my TM-300 and just ordered Rode microphone and Schneider wide angle but I am planning to iMac 20 inch next year, hopefully.

What I'm trying to say is, you need as powerful processor as possible for HD editing. I think what we have now is i7 processor is the most powerful.

When editing is lagging, it take away the fun and creative parts from my soul... icon_question.gif

I was just thinking about this. Thanks for your input. Laggy editing is really annoying. It was just today that I discovered how big HD footage actually is. So I think I will get an SD cam instead. At least until I get a computer powerful enough to handle HD footage. Hell, my budget doesn't really grant me access to a HD cam anyways tongue.gif

laugh.gif sometimes I would just do old skool, pen and paper and edit on the story board with different ideas whilst wanting for the PC to process or render.
BTW, I thought you had an i7 rig?

Today, I saw an adv from Sony's Trade in offer, and it set me thinking about upgrading my ancient sony cam DVD653E.
My budget is about 3k, High Definition and if possible, would like input/output so that I can convert VHS/LP.
Oh another thing, I would like to move away from Sony if that's possible. Think they are over price, correct me if I'm wrong laugh.gif
