So I'm going over to the UK to do my degree.

Anyone currently (or has been) studying there?

Is the style of lecturing very different as compared to Malaysia? Do they place a lot of importance on coursework? How do Malaysians generally cope?

I need tips on living wise as well. The must-haves, the dos, the don'ts.

Thanx notworthy.gif

Yes. Lecturers explains more but you need to learn the art of writing fast. smile.gif

It depends on what course you are taking.

Make sure you are able to mix well with other people. Be friendly and smile.gif

QUOTE(Silent_scream @ Jun 22 2006, 06:22 PM)
the dos, the don'ts.
Dos:
1) Don't afraid to ask during lectures. They are very helpful.
2) smile.gif
3) Bring more Milo and Maggi Mee if you dun know how to cook or you don't like western food.
4) Bring some cash (not too much) along with you for a few days expenses.
5) Be thrifty BUT not too thrifty (kiam-siap)
6) Enjoy your life there
7) Always walk with another partner during the night. Safety first.
8) Don't waste your luggage weight by bringing 10-inch thick notepads.

Don'ts:
1) be a snob
2) show-off, wannabe or whatever falls in that category

Will add more later.

be self confident.
i find it useful to mix more with the locals there instead of hiding in your comfortable cocoon... meaning mixing with malaysians.
not to say that do not mix with the malaysian... but try to mix with other races more.

Here are some things that you may find useful...:

1) Don't multiply the price of everything by 7. If you do, you wouldn't eat anything.
2) Get a part-time job. Extra money is always a good thing. Try avoiding working in call centres. Best jobs are the ones on campus.
3) Party every weekend. You're a student, enjoy it while it lasts.
4) Join societies. It's the best way to make new friends, and it looks good on your CV.
5) Do volunteer work. Makes you feel good, and it's a bonus on your CV as well.

That's it from me. Above all else, studying abroad is a great learning experience. For the first time in your life, you'll have to manage your time, finances, accommodation and social life all by yourself. It's great fun, trust me smile.gif

I'm afraid that you'll need to go for the next round of application(intake 2007). Pharmacy is a competitive course, most if not all universities would have had a complete file since january or so.

You would know if you have visited the repsective unversities' website.

In any case, UCAS and MABECS are places to start.

Thanx loads to those who helped. Though links to websites are good, I'd prefer those who has first-hand experience. I mean, those websites don't tell me things like

"Don't multiply the price of everything by 7. If you do, you wouldn't eat anything"

Haha...yeah. Keep 'em coming biggrin.gif

You can give it a try to apply at nottingham malaysia.
When you come here for the first time, I'm sure most of the things you see are expensive (food, accessories and other stuffs)
Once you get a part time job or get used to the environment here, you'll know how to budget yourself already!

i applied to NZ, auckland university. hope still in time to get a place for the 2nd semester which is on 17th of july.. or else nid to wait till next yr. sleep.gif''' 2006 will be a blank yr for me.

yea, i have frens in uk too..
u can try to work part-time, to help supportin urself..
minimum wage in UK 1 hr is 5.5. U can work 20hrs per week.
for holidays, u can work full day..

so if u work 20hrs a week, it's definitely enuff for lodging + food.
ur parents jus hav to pay for tuition fees. but u nid to hav a fren
whois familiar with uk, so it will be easier to get a job.

for NZ, 10.25 per hr.
they hav minimum wage, unlike msia... work until like a bull...
no human rights!!! Lolx

Hi .... for your information, the will be a LAST ROUND enrollment around July-August. This is called final clearence. Most of the representatives from UK uni will come over to M'sia to collect students, but still depends on their uni policies. The actual date of this clearence can be clarified with the British Councelor. Just keep your eyes on the Adv of newspaper & TV. Wish u all the best! *CHEERS* rclxms.gif

Updates:

Dos:
1) Apply Railcard for cheap train tickets (in UK)
2) Bring easy-to-wash clothes (e.g. t-shirt, jeans, etc.) which doesn't require much attention.
3) Bring a few pieces of winter wear (1-2 would do) ONLY because Malaysia sells sucky winter wears. Out of fashion and not thick enough tongue.gif > Get it over there.
4) Yes, you can work part time. But do not spend too much time in that until you neglect your studies. smile.gif

Don'ts:
1) Waste your time on applying HSBC saving accounts. They are very fussy though they are famous/good/international/professional. Go for Natwest for instant approval. Barclays (not recommended) requires you to have a ertain amount of cash in your saving account or else you'll get penalty.
2) Bring dry products ONLY to avoid quarantine by Immigration department.

I have HSBC, Natwest and Lloyds bank.
Well if you get into UK universities that is in a major city, eg: birmingham, you'll only get a Step account from Natwest (which is quite useless)
I have friends who are studying in Uni of Leeds and Uni of Glasgow. They manage to get Student Account from Natwest. Try to ask natwest first if they offer Student acc to you or not because Student Accoun is only applicable to LOCAL students. If you get a student account, you'll get a 5 years young person railcard. That's cool man!
If natwest offers you a normal Step account, you can try lloyds (which I did) and I luv Lloyds. 1) high interest, cheque book, visa debit card, visa credit card, internet banking.

I'm not sure if you're interested with HSBC but HSBC sucks!!!! I hate that!! But I know some think HSBC is good. Depends on which branch I guess. The branch in my university sucks!! lousy service!!!
