I'm the unfortunate owner of what some people in other tech forums have dubbed "a $100 plastic brick". Before I return to the shop where I bought it and cave the heads of the people who sold me this thing, I'd like to know if it's really just me, the modem itself or other internal/external factors.

First off, when I got it, it looked like any other ADSL modem out there but after installing it, I found it had a built in NAT firewall in it, and the only way to turn it off was to hook it up to a router or use the bridged mode.

This is where my nightmares begin. One of the flaws of this particular modem, is that it very unstable and is unable to handle too many connections at once. It'll suddenly disconnect itself after a while or just freezes the entire connection(All I'm running are MSN Messenger, BitComet and doing some web browsing) It also probably means this modem is unfit for P2P usage. vmad.gif Even for normal direct downloads, I find the speed very unstable as it'd go very high and suddenly drop to an abysmal 0.1 kbp/s. I'm using streamyx's 1.0mb connection btw, and this is not connection related as I had no problems before this(had to switch modems after the old one got fried in a lightning storm) Worse of all, there seems to be no related support available at Linksys' main site or any firmwares.

tl;dr

1. Unable to handle many connections.
2. Bad for P2P usage.
3. Annoyingly unstable.
4. Built in NAT firewall

So what do you think, fellow lowyatards? Was I ripped off and bought a lame excuse for an ADSL modem, is it just me or are there any other factors involved?

LawL~

Topic title. Linksys ADSL2MUE ADSL2 Modem. I don't think there's any more info I can provide you on the model itself.

Anyway, if you were wondering what I had previously, it was the one supplied by TMNet, which surprisingly was waaaaaay better than this one.

Well, it's definitely not due to overheating, since it tends randomly freeze/disconnect for no apparent reason after 40 minutes of usage. The longest time of uninterrupted usage I had with this modem was probably 2 hours the most.

Also, about those links, I actually went to read them first before deciding to post here, since I wanted a second opinion.

As for the firmwares, the one built in was probably the most recent one, since I couldn't find any other newer ones anywhere.

Well in any case, I'll see what I can do about it.

not that you're being ripped-off, more like you're a lousy buyer who did not do research before getting a product.

but what youc can do is return the product, tell the shop that it doesn't work. ask them to swap unit or something.

can try negotiate.

I'm using the very same modem, but I dun experience any frequent hanging or dc stuff..

But my friend is using the same modem model in a high rise building, his wan always auto restart and some time freezes. I'm not sure it's due to area or due to pure luck.

Lawl, okay, Mr l337, if you must know, my modem got fried on that faithful night and being very dependant on internet usage, I had to get one A.S.A.P. and Linksys seemed a worthy buy, or so I thought. The fact they never mentioned about the NAT makes it a tad more annoying.

Anyway, thanks for stating the obvious and for replying. =)

@Suiteng

Wow, really? You're the first person I know who has something good to say about this modem. Well how about, P2P software? Do you experience any slowdown whatsoever? Also, I can no longer host games online with this modem either. Firmware version?

Been using it powered on 24/7 with no issue. Maybe it's some batch related problem?
