guys, dont you think that this thread should be closed and deleted? It's violating the Micro$oft's rules..Discussions like this should be kept away I believe smile.gif

Discussing WGA isn't wrong as it has been deemed to be spyware by certain quarters of the tech community and you can legitimately choose not to have it installed. It is only wrong when you're using an actual pirated copy and have been rightfully detected and are trying to get rid of it by non-legit means.

However, I'll leave it to your own imagination on how many posters in this thread are actually legitimate customers of M$. wink.gif

Disagree.
I have a legit copy but still I don't like the presence of WGA to tell that I'm legit.
It's just another redundant background process that serve me pointless.
I have my windows updates as usual.
My opinion. smile.gif

You don't need to install again sp1/sp2 if your windows xp cd already sp2.

If the xp sp2 you have is legitimate software, WGA should not be notify you...

But, otherwise, you should call Microsoft regarding your issue...

Is your Windows XP CD with SP2? If not you need to download it from Microsoft website to install it some old Windows XP CD doesn't come with SP2. Check your system properties to know whether SP2 is installed or not.

Acutally, you can download updates for XP (SP2, SP3) and VISTA(even SP1) even with piraty O/S.

WGA is a joke. It doesn't work.

I use piraty O/S and all i got is a "Thank you for using Genuine Software" from MS whenever i do validation to download some stuff...

btw, I do not encourage piracy, I just did it to show the WGA doesn't works and serves nothing but annoyances. whistling.gif

Windows Update doesn't require you to install WGA anymore meaning that you can choose not to install WGA notifications when asked to do so in
Windows Update.

Looks like WGA on a busted XP Pro is going to do more than just nag...

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...1600&sec=nation

QUOTE
Starting Wednesday, users with pirated copies of Microsoft Corp's Windows XP Professional operating system (OS) on machines that are Internet-capable could find their computer displays going black and with no screen icons visible.

However, that's only according to The Star. I don't see this news appearing on any other tech website. Yes I've tried googling.

UPDATE: Confirmed on Slashdot here. Best of luck to all pirates out there! tongue.gif

They may eventually but for now, just avoid WGA. By doing so, you won't be able to enjoy many freebie from MS - IE7, WMP11 and etc...

But, in a sane person's mind, who cares? Plenty of real bloat-free freebies out there.
