Description of the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications application
Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications notifies you if a copy of Microsoft Windows XP is not genuine. The notification messages only appear on computers that have failed the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process and that are running a copy of Windows XP that is not genuine. Oh damn! I must try using my OEM XP profesional licence. I don't know why windows doesn't allow me to use the key printed on the sticker. Maybe I have to use OEM CD to install OEM windows. I will ask my laptop retailer if I still cannot use my legit key. blink.gif

For me, the price for the original one is quite insane for most of Malaysians.

Even I who can get earnings more than RM2K for a month, after deduction from my salary for everything, its quite 'hard' to spend up RM200+ and RM500+ for XP and XP PRO. Yes, I have the original CD for WIN XP HOME EDITION that comes with my old Dell Dimension 8200, but it was crapped with all the error messages after doing the updates.

Lastly, the pirated one is the main choice even I have the original CD. Why? Get 2nd license for my 2nd, 3rd and 4th PC? Huh, the add-up license cen get me to buy hundreds of other pirated Games and other Apps CD.

my 2 cents, I can buy the original CD if the price slash up.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but it seems Microsoft Office and the rest of the products will be having their own Genuine Advantage programmes.....

I congratulated Microsoft for their good work on promoting Open Source Software. Great now we finally get to see people installing Linux and Unix distro widely.

Both system are more secure and reliable and every commercialware has it`s own equivalent gpl ware ..

IMHO; if r not into gaming why not just migrate to other operating system.

True; Microsoft is a jerk but that's not a reason for us to becoem a pirated jerk too (lol).

Since I migrate I think i had stopped using pirated software let say for how long? 2-3 years i guess

IMHO it's a nice move from Microsoft, at least from their perspective. It also indirectly benefits all those users who're paying for legit Windows while seeing the rest using it illegally without having to pay.

They are lenient enough to allow pirated WinXP users to still login and operate their OS. If pirated OS users don't like the "tattoo" and want to move to Linux , go ahead, it's not that MS is losing $$ from it anyway.

And one thing for sure, for those corporate PCs which have illegal Windows installed, it is very likely for them to change to legit Windows since the warning message is somehow...obvious.

$cre* Microsoft. You think an average Malaysian can fork out RM 320 to buy a copy of your always suck copy of Windows XP...Wait , Wait..if you buy Windows XP alone [legit] you could get :-

1. Lame spybots and Bonzi The Buddy [a nice dude] that will take over your PC

2. Cheap scriptkiddies with lame virus scripts that can delete all your Word documents

3. Hijacked!..Mommy , someone installed 'porn'....HELP !

4. Spams !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Well everyone gets it..Some spams are included with 'Free ActiveX thingy' ...Once you open them..and vola , your IE is gone !

To overcome that , you got to fork extra RM 300-500 to buy an Antivirus solution , a firewall solution and of course some sort of protection against that. That sums it up to RM 800..Okay , RM 800....Thats expensive [I know there are freeware stuff out there , but again ....Lets just be professional sedikit]

Fine , RM 800 just on bloody Antivirus ...You think I can afford that...No , I think most of us can't. Linux ?..Yes , would an average gamer would not like it. But if you have no choice , then go ahead and try it....Of course gaming is possible. But then only the '1337' would do that. If you're new to Linux , you would have problems with hardware and stuff like that

Eventually , M$ would lose out...As you see , now apple is trying to act smart....Now they allow Dual Boot and they run on Intel...People are moving to Apple Platform slowly..If you do that , people would love Apple more and there would be games for Apple..Microsoft could go and sell their 'OSX Tiger Cetak Rompak' - aka Vista.....Oh yes , the patched would be fixed

Remember Activation thingy..Microsoft said , it would stop users from using iligeal copies of Windows...That thing also didnt work very well...As for myself , I bought this Dell PC and thank god it comes with Legit copy of Windows XP.Otherwise , I would dump my Ciplak Windows and use Linux fully..But thank god , there is this legit windows to stop me....

You don't need RM800 to buy an antivirus solution. Just because it is free, doesn't mean it doesn't work.

avast (or AVG or antivir) + Sygate Personal Firewall + Spybot (and others) + Firefox (or others) + AutoPatcher XP + common sense = safe computer.

And free too (excluding bandwidth and time of course).

Yes that is true unless we are talking about corporations/companies. Most of the freeware is only free for personal usage.

but.. have u guys calculated how much u have spend on OS alone.

i've got Pentium 2-400 and it has been running win98SE, upgraded to Win2000, and finally winXP

imagine how much will it costs for OS alone if u purchase the retail package. win98se > win2k > winxp

and not onli that.. when MS phase out the support for older OS.. its a nightmare (no proper updates for software/hardware compatibilities)

You've got a point there, a copy of windows and its software is only legit for use with 1 pc. That is why people still associated PC as a luxury item. Not to mention that nowadays you need to have a decent PC to run windows at its optimum.

With Linux, you can save a lot. But beware the learning curve might be time consuming depending on how quicly you adapt into new environment.
