Hi all,

I need some advice. My girl girl is 8yrs coming to 9 next year and she hasn't been spayed. Around 2 years ago she started lactating and I brought her to the vet who said it's nothing just hormone imbalance and it would go away. FYI she's a full time indoor girl, no other dogs at home. Rescued her back from the old folks home back when she's less than a month old as they were going to have her for "dog kut teh". So there is no chance of her being pregnant.

The lactating did stop for a while and it comes on and off. Since the vet says it's ok and that spaying her would be unnecessary at the time since she's already a senior so I did not do anything. After 2 years (during which I went abroad to work and left her with my mum) she started developing lumps and after my mum took her to some other vet in Penang, they think it's cancer but benign.

Recently I came back and brought her back to stay with me and took her to another vet in Bandar Sri Damansara where the vet said that it would be better to operate her and take out the lumps and also perform the spaying at the same time. But that there are dangers obviously since she's so old.

What I need to know is, would you guys do it? I mean she's a healthy dog with no major health issues (apart from her skin problem which is just sensitive skin and food eventually cures it as long as the environment she's in is clean). She wee wee twice a day (on walks in the morning and evening) and poo poo (once a day ; sometimes twice on the same evening walk) and eats and drinks normally. She has never been an overtly active dog, quite passive so I dont think she's sluggish or anything. Basically I can see nothing wrong with her, i.e. the lumps are not affecting her at all.. or if it is, I cant sense it (and I do check everything, ears, eyes, discharges, smell, stool, etc).

My mom's advice is that she's already this old and since she's perfectly happy and enjoying herself there's no need to put her through the pain of surgery. But then there's always this nagging fear that the cancer might turn malignant.

Can anyone advice me if she should undergo the surgery? and if so has anyone had any experience with the vet in question? (I.e. the Bandar Sri Damansara chinese vet)? and if there's any better vet out there? (I am prepared to spend for her well-being but obviously within my means and is reasonable and not overt. I am afterall on a student's budget.)

Thanks in advance for all your advice. notworthy.gif

Dear MeltC,
Its a hard decision to make, and I think in the end its going to be up to you.

Can you feel the lumps, would it be a major surgery with a big wound? Can you afford the time to clean it every day till it heals? Cuz without proper care it could get infected. How much potential time could you gain from the surgery anyway, and could you afford it+meds+bandages and dressings (which can add up to a lot). What are the risks involved? What are the potential gains?

Since she has been living with the lumps for 2 years, and assuming they have been stable, and not bothering her, why not keep an eye on her and them for more time before making that decision? Your dog sounds pretty healthy right now, its a tough situation where its hard to do, hard to not do.

One of the factors you could consider is that your dog is now 8 years old, thats sort of middle aged, but dogs lifespan can vary a lot. Is she slowing down? Muzzle turning grey, arthritis kicking in, that should be a factor when making a decision for you

When we found a lump on my dogs tail when he was 16, we made the decision not to operate due to his age. When the lump turned cancerous, and he was put on anti-cancer meds and antibiotics to clean up the smell, he felt very sickly (wouldnt eat, but still want to go for walk), so we stopped the anti-cancer pills, and used the antibiotics for a few days as necessary. He felt better but finally passed away peacefully 6 months later.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have taken surgery when the lump was benign, or when the lump turned cancerous. Should I have stuck with the anti-cancer pills, or not? However, pills are not enough to cure or control cancer, ppl mostly do surgery, sometimes radiation, and a) I dont have access to that, b) dogs already 17, worth the pain to gain a few months or a year at most?

Like humans, medicine and surgery isn't free. While surely it would be wonderful if we could afford the best from time and money for our pets, sometimes love is all we can give and it is enough. It's easy for someone on the internet to say you SHOULD do this and that, hang the costs, your pet deserves the best, but if they were in your situation would they practice what they preach? We all do what we can. There are people out there who choose to die because they can't afford surgery and don't want to burden their children.

All the best for your dog, she's lucky to have an owner who loves her and considers her options for her. Whichever you decide, as long as your dog knows you love her, and she loves you, thats more than enough smile.gif

On a different note, I had a TERRIBLE experience with Maju Animal Clinic in Melaka. 3 years ago My dog was sick and because my regular vet, Dr Jeya from Semabok was out of town, I decided to bring her to Maju as we had been buying dogfood/dog shampoo from their place and it looked pretty well stocked and ok.

When I brought my dog in, the lady vet barely touched her, looked over her, took her temperature, gave her a jab, and gave me some antibiotics for her. Very fast. (My dog hadnt been eating and drinking much for a few days, we didnt notice cuz another dog was sick as well). Then (my big mistake), I asked her if there was anything long lasting to prevent ticks and fleas, and she recommended a med called "spot on" to dab on the dogs shoulder, and I was interested and asked when I could use it on my dog. She said it was very safe, and safe even for nursing/pregnant dogs and I could use it now, and she put it on my dog. (I still feel like slapping myself for not thinking).

Later that night, my dog started passing blood but was still moving around, I freaked out and called Maju (they were closed so I called their mobiles. First the lady (who didnt answer) then the guy vet on the card). I told him my dog was passing blood, I brought her to your clinic this afternoon, could you come over? My house isnt far from your clinic. And the ba5tard tells me TO GO TO THE PHARMACY AND BUY ANTI DIARRHEA pills and give to my dog. Then he hangs up. I was furious, Dr Jeya was out of town, and I didn't know the number for Vally. My dog died within the hour.

Now, frankly I don't know if my dog could have been saved, since it was already passing blood. But the idiocy of his advice was such that I felt like storming into his clinic with my dogs bloody body (she bled from the eyes when she died) and asking him if anti diarrhea pills could have helped THAT.

My regular vet told me later that if the dog had not been eating/drinking few days, she should have been put on an IV drip.

So yeah. I've never gone back to Maju and I still feel like spitting on them when I pass that so called clinic.

Sashan, sorry to hear bout ur story. Well, i had a similar experience.

Well, my baby girl was fine. She still eats and run around. I recall reading bout dogs, if they still eat and drink, they are still in the OK state.

My baby girl. A female Shih Tzu (Her name is Keiki). Like any other owner, i love my baby. She started drooling, alot but she still eat and drink and run around with my baby boy..Well, this vet of hers, knows nothing, do alot of test..and just feed her vitamin. If i know he is like that, i would have just kept her with me and be with her till last minute. He said she needs to be hospitalized. I left her with him. With a heavy heart.

First thing in the morning, my sister called the vet. She was informed "Oh, ur dog, she is dead". That was all. Cruel!! They don't even bother to call me to tell. Well, i gather up my courage and go there 2 hours later. Surprisingly, my baby's body is still warm. I strongly believed she just passed away. What vet can have no heart at all? The only thing the vet told me was she poop blood. Well, i saw the blood on the blanket i left my baby girl with but the amount was so minor that you wont believe its the cause of her death.

My baby boy stayed away from me when i brought my girl back home to be buried.

Long after, i verified my suspicion that the vet was no good. I went to a nearby petshop and was told horrible stories about other owners experience. Apparently, this vet's major was fish. Not dogs. How did they get their license? Without knowing, my housemate sent her rabbit to the same vet for grooming. Well, while grooming, he skin got cut. Pity the rabbit and my friend. Its a vet in Seri Kembangan. Well, there's not many there. So, easy to identify which it is...

I highly recommend this place for cats. Dr. Khor has been the vet for my Oliver (DSH, 7-month male) for the past month plus that we've had him. Excellent bedside (table-side? tongue.gif) manners, very calming to both the patients and their owners. Friendly receptionist too. Charges are quite reasonable, I think the check up was about RM15 or slightly less.

Also, the reason why I went to him in the first place, was that the clinic is open until 8.30pm on weekdays!!! Weekends I'm not 100% sure, but you can always call and check.

As a bonus, the place has about 6 or so cats roaming about, I believe they belong to the doc or the receptionist. All of them are very friendly (including one that made sure my Ollie didn't pick any fights smile.gif )

Only disadvantage I can think of is that finding parking near that area can be challenging, especially during weekends.

Hi, take to the vet, the gp will most likely die. I recommended someone, whose gp also has the same problem as urs, to take transfer factor and it worked.

My cat was on this drug recently. It was not a choice, otherwise i wouldn't have given. Don't give med. without a reliable vet's prescription and give antibiotics only when absolutely necessary. i've been to many vets who happily prescribe antibiotics like nobody's business but I usually question whether it's necessary. after all, why should i take something that i wont give my cats but yet have to pay for it, especially when it's not necessary. anyway, dont give med. without a vet's prescription. This is not something that u can buy off the rack at petshops or pharmacies.

A fairly new vet (~3 months old) has opened at Bandar Puteri, Puchong, thus bringing the number of vets in Puchong to 5.

Urban Paws Animal Clinic
25, Jln Puteri 5/20 Bandar Puteri
(03) 80633708
Dr. Dom Linggir Agas
Clinic Hours: M-T 9:30am-1pm,3pm-7:30pm / Sat 10am-5pm / Sun 10am-2pm / Closed on Fridays

There's only one vet manning this clinic at the moment, but he's friendly and dispenses good advice. Good place to send your pets to if you're looking for 110% attention for your pets.

I bring my min pin to Dr Dom. Indeed a very nice guy and ever ready to give advise and explain things. Somehow i just don't know what nationality is he rclxub.gif

Thanks a lot Sashan and I'm very sorry about your doggie and the bad experiences with the vet.

I'm still considering abt the op and yes I do have sufficient funds to cover the costs but probably not enough time to dress her and keep an eye on her all the time as I'm still working.

Anyways, I'm still keeping an eye on the health of the lumps and there are at least 4 lumps but all are just lumps with no pus no nodes even and no smell. So, if there are any changes I think I would bring her in for a 2nd opinion before putting her under the knife.

P.S. She's 9 this year. and the wound according to the vet will be knit closed immediately as there are plenty of loose skin around that area that they can use.

She doesn't seem like she's slowing down though still prancing around in parks like mad, muzzle's still dark, no sign of arthritis. Only thing is the lumps....

hi,
i'm having a toy poodle.
she's having some problem with her leg because she's having median subluxation of her patella..
and the only solution to fix this is by doing surgery.
i'm a student actually and can't really afford really expensive surgeon.
can i know anyplace or any vet can do this kinda surgery with a cheaper price.
the previous vet i went offered me RM 1000++ which i think it's way too much and i have no chances to afford it.
so i'm asking for help from you guys so that you guys can give me some opinions or can intro me to a cheaper vet and affordable by me..
my dog now is really suffering. her muscle has gone for wasting so much.

Hello everyone.

I want to inform everyone to be very very careful at the vet when you save stray dogs. You got to find out if your dog has hookworm or any kind of worm as this can seriously lead to death if it is not treated properly. Pester your vet if you must because my vet did not inform me and a few weeks later, my pet passed away and I was accused on not making him take the medication (or ghost medication).
