wanted to ask should i buy 1gb ram or 2x1gb ram for my Pentium M 1.86ghz?
Currently my laptop is just 512, wanted to upgrade but scared 2gb ram will be wasted if the processor is slow. Hmm....anyone mind tell me?
Thanks
*

Hmm, I was using 1GB + 256 MB ram before on Pentium M 1.6 wINDOWS xp. It was not enough for me. I am used to opening many many many firefox tabs and also using many addons. I also use a few programs at once, typically firefox, WMP, download manager, systmem utilities, MSN. It normally exceeded 1GB after a long session of surfing. So I changed to 2x 1Gb and the performance was obviously much better cause no need to use virtual memory anymore. But I noticed on more thing. Even when I have a few programs running, like 500-700MB of Ram used only, my computer was very much faster on 2x 1GB compared to 1Gb + 256 MB. I believe this is due to the utilization of dual channel tech when I am on 2 x 1GB. Dual channel be used when two pieces of RAM are of different capacities.

If you really need a highest standard ddr ram, should looking for Original RAM, like Samsung Original, Hynix Original, Qimonda Original, Micron Original & etc...

Those original ram come with a label of origin (samsung, hynix, qimonda, micron & etc...) But hardly find those ram on retail market. Because they mostly supply to System Integrator like compaq, hp, dell, acer, toshiba, fujitsu, sony & etc...

yes, agree to you too. If you got using those designer software like adobe photoshop, then you should go for 2GB. Because, I found that adobe product really need much ram to run it smoothly, after execute adobe photoshop, my system already eat-up 1532MB's memory (A4 size, 300dpi, psd file)

im wondering....
if i have a PAIR of ddr2 1gb 663Mhz currently running in dual channel at my channel 1...
den if i add in another pair of ddr2 1gb 800Mhz in dual channel at my another channel which is channel 2...

All same brand, same chipset, same capacity..but just different speed...

wat speed my motherboard will run?? and is there any chance that the ram not compatible?

my motherboard is AM2, Asus M2N-E...with 4 ram slot~ smile.gif

Hope someone willing to clear my doubt~~ notworthy.gif

are you a gamer type? tongue.gif
I bought kingston ddr valueram 2GB earlier this year.Noticed a lot of improvement.Previously using 2x256MB DDR.Program now starts faster.Now able to work with visual studio,running database server and listen to mp3 at the same time.Rarely reach more than 1.2GB memory usage.

If I'm not mistaken,both brands offer lifetime warranty. hmm.gif

@ultraconductor
your rams would run on a lower speed as the lower speed rams would need a Vdimm increase to supplement the speed hike. Ram compatibility would depend on your manufacturer. This, you would have to find out on your manufacturers website.

@wickedghost
Both rams will work fine regardless on name of rams, as they follow certain guidelines in the initial process of making them. Also if it is based on bandwidth, its highly suggested you take a 16 chip ram, then an 8 chip ram. In rams, Bandwidth is crucial smile.gif For overclocking, Branding of rams doesnt matter, what matters would be the chip itself, like Elpida, Promos, Qimonda, Micron etc.

simple, just look at the chip smile.gif and if theres a heatspreader, just get the batchno or serial no and google it. Should give u a rough idea.

And if youre experienced enough, just test it and u would know in an instant smile.gif

Greetings all,

I'd like to ask if there's any difference installing RAM of different capacity in different slots.

Currently I have 4 RAMs installed in the following order:
-Slot 1 : Corsair VS256MB400 (256MB @ CL2.5)
-Slot 2 : Samsung M368L6523CUS-CCC (512MB @ CL3)
-Slot 3 : Corsair VS256MB400 (256MB @ CL2.5)
-Slot 4 : Samsung M368L6523CUS-CCC (512MB @ CL3)

I've included some images that I hope would provide some help in the Gurus' analysis. It's a stats info taken from CPU-Z, of which I have no idea how to read it except for some basics.

Would greatly appreciate any help/insight on this matter as I couldn't find anything about it on google (maybe I used the wrong keywords..).

Thanks.

if in the situation like ObeLIsK does the ram still run in dual channel? if yes, then it means that no need to have exact same rams or same manufacturer to run dual channel?
